Though its eruptions have been erratic, the geyser's outflow is nearly constant, pumping more than 4000 gallons of boiling water per minute over the crater rim into the Firehole River.
This little waterfall comes out of the Excelsior Geyser and Yellowstone and flows into the Firehole River. I caught it at sunset, when just the lightest skim of sunlight was hitting the rocks and splashes.
The color is real and not enhanced. It comes from bacteria that live in the 167º F water that flows from the hot spring.

The Excelsior Amusement Park opened in 1925 on the shores of Lake Minnetonka in Excelsior Minnesota. One of the main attractions at the park was a wooden roller coaster named "The Cyclone."
Excelsior Amusement Park was very popular in the 1940s, 50's and later. The park was a popular destination for annual company picnics. During the sixties the park was a popular hangout for local teens, and also attracted crowds of young people from around the Twin Cities.
Like many regional amusement parks of its period, the Excelsior Amusement Park contained a ballroom, which hosted many popular musical acts, including Lawrence Welk, Tommy Dorsey, The Beach Boys, and the Rolling Stones. Legend has it that the stop by this latter group in June 1964 allegedly gave inspiration to the Stone's song You Can't Always Get What You Want, due to an oft-rumored conversation between Mick Jagger and a local Minneapolis character, “Mr. Jimmy," or Jim Hutmaker, who to this day is a celebrity to Excelsior.
The park finally closed in 1973 and was demolished soon afterward. These photos were made shortly after the park closed.

Just east of the angle of General Daniel Sickles’ Third Corps at The Peach Orchard the Union line desperately tried to hold back Longstreet’s attack. The field takes its name from Sickles’ Excelsior Brigade, five regiments that he recruited and organized earlier in the war.

I made this photo of a bottlebrush tree as I was walking around the block in our San Francisco neighborhood. Actually walking around the block usually means wandering farther than just one block. I captured this image a little down the hill on the next block from our home. There were lots of bottlebrush trees planted on the sidewalks in our neighborhood a few decades ago, many of them drought resistant bottlebrush. Since this is an urban environment, there were lots of utility wires crossing the blue sky in this photo. As this was not a documentary photo, I cloned and brushed out the wires to make a more pleasing photo shot with my Canon Powershot SX50.
