Built in 1929 and 1889, these buildings demonstrate the evolution of the Broadway Avenue district during its main period of growth between the 1880s and 1930s. The older building is an example of the Queen Anne style with Italianate elements, having been built to house the grocery owned by Czech immigrant Anton Zverina, and featuring a red brick exterior, limestone trim, one-over-one windows, a cornice, a gabled parapet, first floor storefronts surrounded by cast iron columns, brick corbeling, and brick pilasters. The newer building was constructed to house the Progress Building Savings and Loan Bank, which was a neighborhood institution during the 20th Century. The building features a limestone facade with large bays on the first and second floors, reliefs with decorative geometric and floral motifs, fluted pilasters flanking the first floor bay, front doors with decorative screens, and an alarm over the door. The buildings are contributing structures in the Broadway Avenue Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. The bank building is vacant, while the Anton Zverina Grocery Building presently houses businesses on the ground floor.
