While I was waiting to see the audiologist today, I was reading about the sequencing of the chimpanzee genome and it's comparison with the human genome. Turns out the chimps are only 1.23% divergent from us.
But the image shows something that most people don't understand. Evolution is branching, not linear. And the image makes clear that we and the chimps (Chimpanzees and Bonobos) all share a common ancestor. Go back a little further and we're all related to the great apes, and back even futher and it's the orangutans.
I wonder what happened to the proposal to move chimpanzees from Pan Troglodytes to Homo Troglodytes.

Evolution - Let there be Light. Dance into the Future en daarna Evolution - Let there be Light. Thx.

I saw this scene and I had to hurry to get the camera out of the bag and shoot before other people ran into the scene. Unfortunately I did not have the time to reset the camera settings to full resolution (+RAW), so I only have a JPG of this photo. I'll never shoot in other mode -- even if I don't need the full resolution. It is more time consuming, but I'll resize the photos later then. (15 MB for each shot is much...)
An illustrative example of homology (in German).
Homology:
In evolutionary biology, homology refers to any similarity between characteristics of organisms that is due to their shared ancestry. The word homologous derives from the ancient Greek ομολογειν, 'to agree'. There are examples in different branches of biology. Anatomical structures that perform the same function in different biological species and evolved from the same structure in some ancestor species are homologous. In genetics, homology refers to a similarity of DNA sequences. The DNA sequences are usually similar, not identical. DNA sequences in the same cell can be similar, and DNA in different organisms can be similar. DNA codes with similar sequences are presumed to have a common ancestry. Homologous chromosomes are chromosomes with the same genes and similar sequences. Homology is important in reproduction because pairs of homologous chromosomes line up together during meiosis. - enWikipedia
