The Chef Seafood Symposium is an annual event that invites professional and student chefs to VIMS for a day of learning about seafood and the science behind the food they serve.
This year, chefs heard about different harvest methods that watermen and aquaculturists use, and the chefs got to see some of the gear used for farming shellfish, harvesting sea scallops, and pulling in shrimp first hand. Chef Brent Wertz (Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, Farmington, PA) did a cooking demonstration, and apprentice chefs from the Virginia Chefs Association squared off in a cooking competition. Students from Hermitage Technical Center's culinary program participated by preparing lunch for all the attendees.

You know what REALLY makes me feel old? When I told this little girl that I liked her outfit and that it reminded me of Slim Goodbody (a children's show I used to watch as a kid that promoted good health), I expected she wouldn't know what I was talking about. But I was SHOCKED when her parents didn't! They asked me when it came out and I said in the 70s and early 80s. They looked at me and said "We weren't born back then!" (Not the kid-but the parents mind you! Next I'll be relating familiar time periods with the kids' GRANDPARENTS! Hehe!)
I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. The kid is a tween (10-12), and her parents are probably in their early 30s, which is more than a decade younger than I am. It's still kind of shocking to me though
Beating the Odds Foundation students got a taste of space in May of 2018 with NASA Goddard scientists and engineers.
Goddard center director Chris Scolese welcomed students from Great Valley School District, Bellwood-Antis School District, Learn4Life, Coatesville Area School District, Hollidaysburg Area School District and Carmichaels Area School District.
The students heard all about the latest in astrophysics and got an update on the upcoming NASA's James Webb Space Telescope.
After the scientists presented, then it was the students’ turn to give their own research presentations. Afterwards, the students toured some of the facilities at NASA Goddard, and saw a Hyperwall presenation by Dr. John Mather, Nobel Laureate and Senior Project Scientist for Webb.

LIVE BAND…NEPALI BAZAAR…PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT…CHAIR MASSAGE…AN EPIC FOLK BALLAD…BELLY DANCING…A CHANCE TO HELP
Come to join a group of local talent for a night of fun and art while helping raise money for an elementary school in Achane, Nepal. The primary goal is simple: to build a toilet at the school, providing the children and teachers with a basic luxury which is so simply taken for granted. Any further funds raised go towards purchasing stationary for the school, or for hiring a teacher to work a full year. All of our artists are contributing their works and talents for free for this charitable event. Come and learn, experience a taste of different culture, and reach out from one community to another
LIVE BAND: Groove to the soothing sounds of PAUL IZAK and his backing band as they jam for the cause and rock the house.
NEPALI BAZAAR: Peruse the incredible collection of Nepali goods, clothing, and jewelry offered from MICHAEL HAMILTON's journeys through Asia. A percentage of all proceeds will go directly to to the charity fund. Contacting Michael: info@lotusspace.com
PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT AND FOLK BALLAD: Follow the inspiring journey that led to this event with an intimate series of portraits accompanied by a old style folk ballad performed by Matthew Chamberlain chronicling an epic journey through an incredible land.
CHAIR MASSAGE: Feel the healing hands of JOSH JENSEN LMT in an incredible massage experience. Josh has over ten years experience in the healing art of massage, and his specialties include Shiatsu, Tui na, Thai massage, Reiki, and of course, chair massage.
