Top of the garden, early evening.
This year I have acquired some new friends. From early on in the summer, whenever I went out into the garden first thing to refill the bird feeders, a small brown bird, which I tentatively identified as a baby robin, would land on the bird table beside me while I was putting seed out. Then whenever I went out in the garden after that he would follow me, flying first in tight circles around my head and legs and then hopping from perch to perch, often no more than a few inches away. For a while I assumed it was one bird but then, one morning, I was greeted suddenly by four baby robins flying in circles around my head and legs, supervised from a little more distance by an adult robin! Ludo and Bramble are my constant companions in the garden and this year we are privileged to be accompanied by our little avian friends,
What makes for an intriguing photograph? The subject and composition are key, but they alone don't guarantee a meaningful image. Is it the color? I once thought so, but now find that color control - knowing when to saturate, and when to remove color - is better. Is it the depth of field? Modern photography dictates that a shallow depth of field is desirable, but that is only a small part of what makes a photo meaningful.
Yet none of those alone could be said to have the most weight in a photograph. No, what matters in photography more than anything else is light.
This photo is similar to the one before it: the concept was to utilize a flash to expose Janelle properly while under-exposing the background (by virtue of the fact that the flash couldn't light the background as well). Unfortunately, I had great difficulty in getting the desired results from the flash as the E-P1 would not allow me to trigger it wirelessly. In this particular shot, I gave up, disabled the flash, and took the photo as it was, figuring that I could try to make up the difference in post.
The original, unmodified photo was flat across the scene. While the sun is capable of creating its own dynamic lighting, things become a lot more bland when it sets. Colors fade, shadows soften, and apparent contrast decreases. The difference can partly be made up in post, but it can only be taken so far. Having control over the lighting is the superior option.
(The processing on this photo could probably have been taken a few steps farther, but I didn't put in too much effort after I saw how much easier it was to work with the photo where the flash had been used.)

early evening disneyland main entrance. had a slight over-exposed shot on the extreme right side. viveza fixed that. then merged all 5 vertical panoramic shots. then viveza brought up the shadows of all the foreground imagery, trees, and station. increased saturation of the blue/white sky, contrast, and added some structure for cloud "pop". then i used dfine afterwards for slight clean up.
