The European greenfinch or simply the greenfinch (Chloris chloris) is a small passerine bird in the finch family Fringillidae.

This bird is widespread throughout Europe, North Africa and Southwest Asia. It is mainly resident, but some northernmost populations migrate further south. The greenfinch has also been introduced into Australia, New Zealand, Uruguay, and Argentina. In Malta, it is considered a prestigious songbird, and it has been trapped for many years. It has been domesticated, and many Maltese people breed them. In Hungary, it is threatened. It has just recently been recorded in Quetta, Pakistan.

The European Goldfinch is a highly coloured finch with a bright red face and yellow wing patch. Sociable, often breeding in loose colonies, they have a delightful liquid twittering song and call. Their long fine beaks allow them to extract otherwise inaccessible seeds from thistles and teasels. Increasingly they are visiting bird tables and feeders. In winter many goldfinches migrate as far south as Spain.

Another shot of a European Roller, taken last week, in Hungary.

One of a nesting pair that we were lucky enough to observe, as they were tooing & froing, feeding their chicks.

Spectacular birds to watch & photograph.

Species: Merops apiaster.

Lesvos, Greece.

It is one of the most colourful birds in Europe. It spends winter in Africa. Although its name implies that it destroys bees, it does not seriously harm beekeeping, because, besides bees, it mainly consumes wasps and other insects - enemies of bees.

Many thanks to people who view or comment on my photos.

The European robin (Erithacus rubecula), known simply as the robin or robin redbreast in Ireland and Britain, is a small insectivorous passerine bird that belongs to the chat subfamily of the Old World flycatcher family. About 12.5–14.0 cm (5.0–5.5 inches) in length, the male and female are similar in colouration, with an orange breast and face lined with grey, brown upper-parts and a whitish belly. It is found across Europe, east to Western Siberia and south to North Africa; it is sedentary in most of its range except the far north.

The term robin is also applied to some birds in other families with red or orange breasts. These include the American robin (Turdus migratorius), a thrush, and the Australasian robins of the family Petroicidae, the relationships of which are unclear.

Making do with some local showy birds during the current lockdown. Very enjoyable few hours in lovely late afternoon sun.

(Canis lupus lupus)I was looking through my archives and came across this image taken on a trip to the Bavarian National Forest in Southern Germany a few years ago. I don't know why I haven't posted it before!
