Gay pride or LGBT pride is the positive stance against discrimination and violence toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people to promote their self-affirmation, dignity, equality rights, increase their visibility as a social group, build community, and celebrate sexual diversity and gender variance. Pride, as opposed to shame and social stigma, is the predominant outlook that bolsters most LGBT rights movements throughout the world. Pride has lent its name to LGBT-themed organizations, institutes, foundations, book titles, periodicals and even a cable TV station and the Pride Library.
Ranging from solemn to carnivalesque, pride events are typically held during LGBT Pride Month or some other period that commemorates a turning point in a country's LGBT history, for example Moscow Pride in May for the anniversary of Russia's 1993 decriminalization of homosexuality. Some pride events include LGBT pride parades and marches, rallies, commemorations, community days, dance parties, and large festivals, such as Sydney Mardi Gras, which spans several weeks.
Common symbols of pride are the rainbow or pride flag, the lowercase Greek letter lambda (λ), the pink triangle and the black triangle, these latter two reclaimed from use as badges of shame in Nazi concentration camps.

That's quite a career! But perhaps his greatest work was the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

For all this equality and activism, there is a glaring omission from the square: Where are the ladies? Well, later this year Dame Millicent Fawcett, prominent suffragist, will take her place among the gentlemen making the score eleven - one. As a wise man(!) once observed, the journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. And as I've quoted four men now, I'll close with a quote from suffragette Emeline Pankhurst

There are five elements to this photo, all desaturated and then combined using the magic of Photoshop layers:
1) A pale grey background
2) My fist, with thanks to my daughter Hollie for capturing it, otherwise it would have been one helluva selfie. I added this as a layer with reduced opacity to reduce its impact, and used the transform tool to rotate and resize it to my liking. I then added noise.
3, 4 and 5: The Parliament Square statues of the great men already introduced, photographed today, each on their own layer to allow resizing and precise positioning.

Gay Pride is a set of protest events that uphold the rights of homosexuals, the injustices committed against us and full equality with heterosexuals. The International Day of Pride LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender), also known as Gay Pride Day or just Gay Pride is a series of events each year celebrating LGBT groups publicly to defend tolerance and equality for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. This festival takes place on 28 June, with celebrations around this day, still common move to the first Saturday before or after June 28, when we commemorate the Stonewall riots (New York, USA) of 1969, marking the beginning of the gay liberation movement. On June 28, 1970 saw the first Gay Pride march in the city of New York and Los Angeles, commemorating the anniversary of the riots. The basic notion of "LGBT pride'' is that no person should be ashamed of what it is, regardless of sex, sexual orientation or gender identity. The celebration usually takes place with colorful "pride marches" to match, in the northern hemisphere, with the beginning of summer. Gay Pride symbols —the flag with the colors of the rainbow and pink triangles— are displayed in abundance this holiday season. The largest pride parade in Spain and Europe is that of Madrid, with more than one million visitors each year (which could reach one million and a half in the normal and two million in the celebration of Europride in 2007). In Europe every year the gay groups of all countries choose a different city so traveling in a unified way to celebrate LGBT pride across the continent, called this place Europride. The first Gay Pride parade in Madrid was in 1978.
