Our Environmental Monitor staff was invited to participate in Ohio Sea Grant's 7th annual writers workshop at Stone Laboratory on Lake Erie.

On the second day of the workshop, we were taken out on a Research Cruise. Volunteers from the group, including Environmental Monitor editor Daniel Kelly, got to help with some sampling of Lake Erie's waters.

My field reserach team stayed in these gers for a few days; these are the typical Mongolian houses. The long valley allowed for a beautiful sunset upon them.

The lakes are supposed to be a little clearer in Maine. These data buoys help keep an eye on lakes across the state, where small shifts in water quality can be a big deal.

Famous for its clarity, Jordan Pond in Acadia National Park is getting a little cloudier. A data buoy is helping scientists and managers find out why.

this is a commercial heating and cooling unit for a high traffic double door entrance. lessons for this include adiabatic change and how that is used for both heating and cooling and also the use of refrigerants and their environmental impact and how to handle them responsibly

An experimental garden at the Adam Joseph Lewis Center.

AJLC, a solar-powered building, has earned national acclaim as a showcase for green building technologies and operating systems. Photovoltaic panels on the center’s roof and parking pavilion capture renewable energy from the sun and south-facing windows allow for passive solar heating. Indoors, a specially engineered wetland called the Living Machine purifies non-potable wastewater for reuse in toilets and the landscape.

Flows of energy and cycling of materials are monitored and displayed by a sophisticated system (150+ sensors) that gives real-time feedback, teaching about sustainability in the built environment.
