Luisa Rios is the local coordinator of Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) key partner in the region, Sociedad Peruana de Derecho Ambiental (SPDA). "Brazil nuts are one of the most important forest products for export that we’ve got," she says. "If we want these forests to produce not only today, but for the next 50 years, we need evaluate what is actually happening so that we can improve the best practice guidelines. This can only be done through field research on the ground." Tthe Teddy-bear cholla in Joshua Tree National Palrk comes into its own for photographers when back-lit at sunrise or sunset. The back-lit needles just glow in this light. While we were photographing the sunrise at Barker Dam during our Joshua Tree workshop, I noticed this little cholla plant glowing against the boulders. When you are out during a sunrise or sunset and concentrating on the 'big picture', don't forget to look at smaller things you can use as design elements in your compositions.

Tapping and selling pine sap provides alternative work to picking tea leaves, but few people pursue it. One worker can collect up to 40 kg of pine sap in a month and sell it for 7000 rupiah (US$0.70) per kg. But the sap can only be sold to forestry officials. When this photo was taken in May, 2008, officials had not visited in two months and the workers could not sell elsewhere, affecting their income.
