That time of year is coming round again for Jonathans check up..

I take photos to keep my mind engaged :)

NASA's Orbit Pavilion at The Huntington in San Marino, California. The structure is an interpretive soundscape that emits sounds as the International Space Station and 19 Earth satellites pass overhead, each sound representing the mission of that particular satellite. I dreamed up the title as I looked at the photo today, with two people literally "entering Orbit."

150003 2J74 17:47 Leeds to Bradford Interchange approaching Dewsbury.

A trip to the area yesterday see two things soon to be lost, one much sooner than the other.

Introduced in the 1980s and around 40 years old the 150 Sprinters soldier on performing duties they were intended, local commuter trips. How much longer will they last, possibly make 50?

The view of the north side of Dewsbury station will be lost in the next few months. Not obviously visible from here, but the foundations for the overhead wire masts are already in, in the right hand cess and soon this wonderful view will be lost behind poles and wires.

Don't look down, the rubbish on in the undergrowth is despicable. Sad that an area with great architecture is let down by a community which seems happy to discard rubbish and flytip wherever they can.

The local landmark, the Emley Moor television mast / radio transmitter stands proudly in the distance. I wonder in this modern digital age how long it will be operational.

When built it in 1971, at 312m it was the sixth tallest freestanding structure in the world. It's now protected by its grade 2 listed status.

"One night in the city" -essay revisited. For AJAC challnege "Tell a story"

Tengo un tango, tango un tengo

lo que tango es lo que soy

porque te doy lo que tengo

nada soy y tango voy.

Con mi tango voy tangando

lo que tengo que es mi amor,

como te doy lo que tengo

nada tengo, nada doy.

Tengo un tango en las caderas

gastadas de buen zaguán,

en el escalón el taco

y un lunar en el ojal.

Tengo un tango en la ventana

de mis ojos de malvón,

un beso en el tarareo,

suspiros de bandoneón.

Tengo un tango cada noche

zumbando en mi soledad,

que te espera y te provoca

pero vos ni te enterás.

Tengo un tango, si me vieras,

que baila en mi corazón.

En un ocho enredaría

tu abrazo con mi perdón.

Cannot see my destination,

Yet still I walk ahead,

Never go where you cannot see,

Is what they always said.

Still I walk forward,

In hopes that my fears will dim,

Silently I'm praying,

That ahead won't be grim.

Headed in the direction,

I enter the mist,

When all of this is over,

I pray I still exist.

Grand Canyon National Park

Downriver from Hance Rapids the character of the Grand Canyon at river level changes dramatically as the river enters Granite Gorge. Upriver the rock formations along the river have all been sedimentary. At Granite Gorge the river begins carving into an igneous rock called Vishnu Schist, a very hard rock considered the bedrock of the planet.

Up above the cliff on the right tailings can be seen from one of John Hance's asbestos mines. “Captain” John Hance was one of the first settlers of Grand Canyon’s south rim. Hance had an interesting past before arrival, fighting in the Civil War originally as a Confederate, and later for the Union. Hance mined minerals in the canyon, most notably asbestos and copper. He also built and operated a small hotel on the edge of the canyon, and constructed the Red Canyon and Old Hance Trails from the south rim to the river. During later years the Fred Harvey Company provided Hance with a living space at the Bright Angel Lodge, where he would sit in the common area and tell stories about his exploits in the canyon to eager park visitors.

CN A434 blasts through Brantford with a clear signal at 228N.

I was watching in amusement that this kayaker was having a hard time entering the crack underneath this rock while her teammates were waiting inside. It took her a few tries to get in. Surprisingly, I also spotted a bird with her little chick in a cavity of the rock about one O'clock above the kayaker. If you zoom in, you can see them.

One of the highlights of my trip to Africa was seeing for the first time this crater or caldera where a volcano erupted 2 1/2 million years ago. It is teeming with life and situated in the Great Rift Valley, the birthplace of mankind 6 million years ago. It is also very close to Olduwai Gorge where the Leakeys exhumed crucial fossils of our prehistoric kin and where both Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey started their careers.
