Allison, far right, explain American acronyms to Okinawa residents during an English class Nov. 5 at the Aeon Rycom Mall in Chatan, Okinawa, Japan. The class provided Okinawa students with an opportunity to interact and improve their English through conversation with native English speakers. During the class, SOFA members played word games with Okinawa residents and explained various cultural references and vernacular. After the classroom activities, SOFA volunteers and students divided into groups, ate lunch and shopped together before returning to the classroom to discuss what they had learned. Marine Corps Installations Pacific strengthens relationships with our allies and partners in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region; enables the strategic launch and recovery of military capabilities to save lives and to preserve regional peace, stability and security; and enables operating force readiness to guarantee victory. Javier is an intelligence specialist with G-2, intelligence, Headquarters Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force and a Manchester, New Jersey, native. Allison is a cannoneer with 3rd Battalion 12th Marine Regiment; currently assigned to 1st Battalion 12th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force and a Farmington, Minnesota, native.

Students may also use the kitchen to make a tea or coffee for free.

Another interesting lesson I learned from my time of teaching was how we take our schooling for granted. I never realized that simple classroom participation was something that is unique amongst western cultures.

 

In Nepal, it was completely foreign to the students that Mike & I would actually want to hear their answers or their opinions. The students generally never had this kind of interaction between student and teacher. For that reason, the students really did enjoy our time with them because it was fresh and different.
