The German militairy cemetry in Vladso (Belgium)
While the cemetries of the Allied troops have stark white colors, those of the German troops are gray- black and look dead and gloomy.
While the militairy cemetries are an example of discipline and structure, the German variants lack alignment and logic.
It was long be argued that this would be regulated in the Articles 225 and 226, from the Treaty of Versailles, but whoever reads these articles will find that this view is incorrect.
The real reason is that the French after the end of the insane war were ordered tot give the German dead their final resting place and collected the bodies in the sector of Ypres and burried them on free pieces of land, altough it was not obvious that they each received an individual tombstone.
So what we see here is in fact a mass grave, covered with granite slabs bearing their names.
Black evokes bad feelings and the Germans were in the eyes of the Allied the agressor, despite the fact that during investigations after the insane war it appeared that all warring parties had engaged in aggression and had committed atrocities. France, England and Italy had already secretly divided the territories of Germany and its colonies, the Habsburg Empire and the Ottoman Empire, in the heat of the battle!
It was of paramount legal importance that, according to the President of the United States Wilson's conviction, Germany should be held responsible but not blamed for the insane war breaking out. However they were incomprehensible responsible for the reparations!
The fact that the Germans and English soldiers at the front still had peaceful feelings towards eachother is evident from the inconceivable Christmas truce in 1914 that took place in the sector of Ypres.
This incomprehensible event of peace and fraternity during the heat of the battle took also place on field sites in many other sections at the front.
The German front soldiers started on Christmas eve 1914 by singing "Silent Night" and shouting "Merry Christmas".
When the British soldiers realized that this was well-meant, they came out of their trenches and even went to exchange their Christmas presents from home.
On Christmas Day, they played football together in the no-man's-land, the piece of land between the trenches of the warring armies; ordinairy soldiers who were tired of the war could momentarily throw of the yoke of the insane war.
When the army commanders, or rather the butchers, got wind of this, these fraternizing actions were officially stricktly forbidden from above and held out very severe punishments if the fightings were not resumed immedialy. The ensuing battles would claim millions of lives on the whole front.

These statues are part of an art exhibition in Budapest.
The New World Design for Contemporary Art presents almost 600sqm of the world of the Great War, which can be seen as the epoch that radically changed the world order of the time: the formerly stable empires have dissolved, culture and public thought have changed dramatically. World War II buried the old world, the result of a new world conflagration and then the Cold War. Europe was bleak in the twilight that the 20th century was dominated by America and Russia.
The exhibition takes visitors from happy peace to enthusiasm for war and bitter disappointment. It shows how the civilization of civilized and global warfare was fought, how the 19th century came to a standstill and the hinterland became the battlefield. The nature of war has changed: victory has now become a function of the amount of war material.

Nelle vicinanze del mercato di Rialto a San Polo, nei pressi della ex chiesa di Sant'Aponal, si trova un ponte storto, chiamato anche ‘di Bianca Cappello', perché conduce al cinquecentesco palazzo Cappello, dove nacque Bianca, nel 1548. Famosa per la sua bellezza e le sue doti raffinate, a soli 15 anni scappò dal palazzo paterno con un giovane fiorentino che lavorava nella vicina banca dei Salviati (accanto al Palazzo, si trova infatti la fondamenta del Banco Salviati). Arrivata a Firenze ed accortasi che il marito aveva mentito sulla reale entità del suo patrimonio, la nobile giovane cercò in tutti i modi di tornare a Venezia, ma invano. Riuscì allora ad entrare negli ambienti della corte Medicea e a diventare l'amante dell'erede al trono, Francesco I, sposato con una principessa austriaca.
Quando il granduca rimase vedovo nel 1578, sposò Bianca che divenne così granduchessa; la bella veneziana non fu mai amata a Firenze ed aveva un terribile nemico: Ferdinando, il fratello del granduca, per salire al trono (Francesco non aveva eredi maschi), nel 1587, fece avvelenare fratello e cognata. La verità è stata scoperta solo recentemente grazie a moderne indagini scientifiche sui resti dei due sposi.
Close to the Rialto Market in San Polo, near the former St Aponal church there is a crooked bridge, also called 'Bianca Cappello', because it leads to the 16th century Cappello' palace, where Bianca was born, in 1548. Famous for her beauty and refined skills, at only 15 years of age she ran away from her father's palace with a young Florentine who worked in the nearby Salviati bank (next to the Palace is in fact Banco Salviati street). On her Arrival in Florence and seeing that her husband had lied about the true extent of his wealth, the noble young woman tried in every way to return to Venice, but in vain. She was however, able to gain access to the Medici court and become the mistress of the heir to the throne, Francis I, who was married to an Austrian princess.
When the Grand Duke became a widower in 1578, he married Bianca who became the Grand Duchess. The beautiful Venetian was never loved in Florence and had a terrible enemy: Ferdinand, the brother of the Grand Duke, to ascend to the throne (Francesco had no male heir), in 1587 poisoned his brother and sister in law. The truth has been discovered only recently, thanks to modern scientific investigations on the remains of the two spouses.

This was shot on London’s South Bank. These kids were playing as I walked past and the image seemed as if they were in a trench and peeking over the top to survey no-man’s-land and watch for the enemy. All whilst mum and dad looked on from behind. Canon EOS 6D & 28-80mm.
