Sometimes it’s just a subtle nuance, but I really like the eye contact in this posed portrait.

June, 2019

The dawn horizon was ablaze with colour but that clear window was closing fast. Heavy dark clouds were overhead and creeping to the horizon at one point it rained a little. This can’t be happening, I’d been worried by the lack of clouds in the forecast, I was not expecting this. As I waited for the sun to rise at least 30 minutes away I thought it was not going to be, that cloud was going to snuff the whole show out. As it happened the sun got to show its face for about 10 minutes before it joined the thick clouds above, and just before it was swallowed the land was a glow with intense light. I turned the camera round to catch it this brief encounter.

As you've seen, our GPS took us on some kind of unexpected two-lane routes during our fall trip. Not sure why, but maybe they were just the best ways to get to where we were headed. Most surprising was that we often encountered large trucks on these small roads. After following this cement truck for quite awhile, the driver started going more and more slowly. I guess he decided he was on the wrong road because eventually he found a driveway and did a five-point turnaround. As usual, we gave him plenty of room.

- Amazing to watch these two characters have a confrontation in the park next door. It happens frequently between these two species. More Magpies showed up to go after the rabbit but, one kick from the bunny and they took off. YEAH!!

Thanks for your visit and kind comments.

As I walked up the Elgol Road back to the car I spotted this ewe nicely silhouetted against the evening sky. Sheep can be very skittish, so I approached cautiously and managed to get off a couple of shots before she bolted.

We were both ,simply, going for a walk in the park---

I cannot imagine that I will ever be blessed with a better opportunity/encounter with Bighorn Sheep as I was the morning of 20 May, 2023.

It was shortly after sunrise as I rounded a bend in Custer State Park when I noticed 6-7 Bighorn Sheep to my left getting ready to cross the road. I stopped the car immediately in the middle of the road and turned on my emergency flashers (In my world this is an emergency!) and prayed they would not scamper back in the direction they had traveled.

I was apparently the only one in the area as they “sheepishly” crossed the road in a near robotic, high alert fashion. One in particular then assumed the role of protector as the others moved into the rocks, he stood in the middle of the road, twice bowing his head to expose the large, flat portion of his horns. I believe in his world; this was the equivalent of pulling your jacket aside to show that you have a gun!

Once the guardian cleared the road, I got out of my car with great hope of just getting one good shot. Little did I know that they wound go down into a small ravine, disappear for a few moments and reappear on a beautifully, naturally landscaped rocky area…in perfect light. It was there that they seemed to instantly relax and start grazing about, always keeping one eye on me.

For about 20 minutes of so I stood alone in the road, my right hand shaking due to weakness from a shoulder replacement, my left shaking from excitement! I was amazed to find that any of my shots were in focus. So blessed by the encounter, so close that I could observe the flexibility of their ankles and hooves as they slowly started climbing the rocks.

I look at these photos now and thank God for the blessing, and for the continued hope that it will take for me to continue to roll out of bed at 4:20 in the morning!

Encuentros con mascarillas

Taken at Bangsbo Dyrehave near Frederikshavn.

We stood for a long time observing, trying to keep our distances to the animals, it was a very peaceful walk in the forest.

There are a number of these parks in Denmark, but to me this one hit the best balance so far, as the deers were shy and cautious, yet staying close enough for observation.

Traveling in the Arctic can be a humbling experience. Yes it’s often numbingly cold, windy and inhospitable for humans. The isolation of some of these Arctic places is also striking. When you encounter the largest land predator on Earth, at eye level, and he stares right into your eyes, you realize how unimportant you really are. We thought this enormous male Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) would be preoccupied with the member of his own species approaching from behind. Instead he fixed his gaze on us. A safe but humbling encounter.

I was going to take a photo of the moss and had an encounter with this slimy slug.

Russell's viper is one of the most venomous snakes in India....it was a chance encounter in its wild mood....taken in Nayachar, West Bengal, India

I was sitting for a bit in a public area in Cambria. At some point I looked up and found this beetle looking back. I eased back, it eased back. No creatures harmed in this encounter.

I have absolutely no idea what sort of beetle it may have been.

Suggestions appreciated.

Even ordinary ones, look forward to your next perchance encounter.

On the street, every encounter is a story in the making…

This young woman and her child, their smiles bright and hopeful, remind us that street photography isn’t just about capturing the decisive moment and it’s also about respect and kindness.

A look, a smile, sometimes a small coin…

Yhese gestures create a genuine bond, a quiet understanding...

To be a street photographer is to balance curiosity with empathy, to catch emotion without losing sight of the human being behind it 🤔
