In the Spacecraft Assembly and Encapsulation Facility -2 (SAEF- 2), JPL workers prepare to mount a Mars microprobe onto the Mars Polar Lander. Two microprobes will hitchhike on the lander, scheduled to be launched Jan. 3, 1999, aboard a Delta II rocket. The solar-powered spacecraft is designed to touch down on the Martian surface near the northern-most boundary of the south pole in order to study the water cycle there. The lander also will help scientists learn more about climate change and current resources on Mars, studying such things as frost, dust, water vapor and condensates in the Martian atmosphere. The Mars microprobes, called Deep Space 2, are part of NASA's New Millennium Program. They will complement the climate-related scientific focus of the lander by demonstrating an advanced, rugged microlaser system for detecting subsurface water. Such data on polar subsurface water, in the form of ice, should help put limits on scientific projections for the global abundance of water on Mars. NASA's Terra spacecraft (right) is prepared for encapsulation in the rocket faring (left) before launch at Vandenberg AFB, Calif. The faring displays a logo of the many science instruments that make up Terra. The spacecraft's launch aboard a Lockheed Martin Atlas IIAS rocket is scheduled for Dec. 16 from Space Launch Complex 3 East at Vandenberg. Terra comprises five state-of-the- art sets of instruments that will collect data for continuous, long-term records of the state of Earth's land, oceans and atmosphere. Together with data from other satellite systems launched by NASA and other countries, Terra will inaugurate a new self-consistent data record that will be gathered over the next 15 years. Personal care and consumer products typically require the encapsulation and delivery of one or more active ingredients. For such applications, the stability of the active ingredients in the delivery system, as well as the tunability of the delivery mechanism are important factors in evaluating the effectiveness of the delivery system. In particular, continuous delivery of active ingredients with minimal initial burst is highly desirable. We have developed microspheres and nanoemulsion-based delivery systems capable of encapsulating sensitive active ingredients, such as drugs and proteins, while maintaining their activity and efficacy. These systems are non-toxic and safe for long-term use. With our technologies, we have successfully delivered active ingredients for postoperative, ocular, wound infection and skincare applications for the medical and consumer industries.

We take printed sheets of paper and encapsulate them to the outer surface using a clear PVC overlay. Very cost effective on 250-2500 full colour requirements.
The idea behind this edit is to encapsulate how the rapid development of architecture has had a large impact on the environment. The constant reliance on electricity and power has made the global struggle with greenhouse gases a more pressing issue over the recent years. The original image was taken at the ‘Cambridge Museum of Technology ‘ which was a pumping station was originally opened in 1894 in a scheme which also saw the creation of a sewage farm at Milton, two and a quarter miles away. Household rubbish was burnt to raise steam, to power the engines which pumped sewage to the Milton sewage farm. Using a cigarette for this edit is to show the comparison on a smaller scale… Smoking regularly has severe repercussions – as does utilising most of the world’s non-renewable sources such as coal or nuclear energy. It’s the same principal, just on a smaller scale. The hand is used to represent the hold society has over these issues, and how we as a whole, have the power to make or break the planet. The original image uses the blurred foreground, using a deep depth of field to focus on the chimney. After selecting the hand holding the cigarette, I pasted it onto the original image. After turning the background black and white, I began to layer-mask the hand into the image. I created the illusion that the hand came from behind the bar and the fourth finger behind the chimney. If you look closely at the colour image of the hand, there’s a visible blue line (which was the sky from the image) which I erased using the layer-mask again. Adding the smoke layer proved to be difficult. I had used a back-light (after some research on how to execute this) but when it came to inserting the smoke into the edit, it was somewhat difficult to differentiate between the smoke and the background. However, I overcame this issue by using the ‘magnetic lasso’ tool which I find more accurate when selecting detailed objects.

Wikipedia tells me - "The buds of many woody plants, especially in temperate or cold climates, are protected by a covering of modified leaves called scales which tightly enclose the more delicate parts of the bud. In the Spacecraft Assembly and Encapsulation Facility -2 (SAEF- 2), a worker maneuvers the Mars Climate Orbiter, suspended by an overhead crane, to the spin test equipment at lower right. The Mars Climate Orbiter spacecraft is moved into the Spacecraft Assembly and Encapsulation Facility-2 (SAEF-2) in KSC's industrial area. It arrived at the Shuttle Landing Facility aboard an Air Force C-17 cargo plane early this morning following its flight from the Lockheed Martin Astronautics plant in Denver, Colo. When it arrives at the red planet, the Mars Climate Orbiter will primarily support its companion Mars Polar Lander spacecraft, planned for launch on Jan. 3, 1999. After that, the Mars Climate Orbiter's instruments will monitor the Martian atmosphere and image the planet's surface on a daily basis for one Martian year (1.8 Earth years). It will observe the appearance and movement of atmospheric dust and water vapor, as well as characterize seasonal changes on the surface. The detailed images of the surface features will provide important clues to the planet's early climate history and give scientists more information about possible liquid water reserves beneath the surface. This - now this is a mongrel of a winter bike. It also neatly encapsulates my utility cycling philosophy: sealed hubs, cup-and-cone bottom brackets, and lots and lots of grease. Up front we have a Sturmey Archer XL-FDD -- you just "set it and forget it!"
For the rear, I had a spare Sturmey Archer AW hub from 1978 (the ones with the "ribbed" hub shell, not the "smooth" one, which was phased out sometime in 1972). So I did this to it.

Set up on 45:18 with 2.1" wide tires, you get two "fixie-like" gears on 65" and 47" respectively. Yes, there is a bit of backlash in the mechanism, due to the cross-shaped design of the clutch -- but this thing's a tank! You just ride it, lock it, and forget about it. It has ZERO thief appeal.
