An old water pipe is emitting fine spray picked by the setting sun. The pipeline (technically, a penstock) is part of the hydro power plant built around the Toketee Falls in Oregon. The same falls we saw in an earlier image: www.flickr.com/photos/olegsokol/54478564334/ The plant uses the drop of the falls to generate electricity, but I wonder how well they hid the bottom end of the penstock.

Had this sinking feeling one day last week. Years ago I configured my camera to emit a little chirp sound upon achieving focus lock. I figured my eyes were already full up with visual inputs, both from the camera but more importantly the scenes I was shooting. Engaging my sense of hearing to handle camera focus allowed me to free up my eyes for the creative aspects. Over the years it has become very instinctive to shoot this way. I am usually looking right through the viewfinder rather than at the actual display. It's also extremely handy when shooting blind (pointing the camera without using the viewfinder at all). The concept is to make the camera an extension of my own vision rather than allowing it to inhibit the creative process. So back to the other day, I noticed that the autofocus chirp had fallen silent. It wasn't that it had been disabled. It stopped because the lens was no longer locking up focus. I tried innumerable adjustments in the configuration screens thinking I had inadvertently bumped some setting. Nothing doing. The autofocus mechanism just wasn't working. I jumped onto youtube imagining this sort of thing was common and that someone would show me how to repair it. I was utterly overwhelmed by the sheer complexity inside of a modern lens. Electro-mechanical engineering at its finest, combined with advanced optics, and all packed into the narrowest confines. Just a few minutes into the first repair video showed me that I was way out of my league and DIY repairs were out of the question. I sent the lens off to a repair facility in hopes that it was something simple (and cheap). The estimate camera back yesterday and was way more than I bargained for. The lens would have to be almost completely rebuilt starting with the very pricey autofocus motor, and on and on. Simply not cost-effective to repair when a replacement lens could be had (think eBay) for less than half the repair estimate. Easy enough to purchase a replacement lens. But tough to let go of the old one. So many memories associated with old camera gear. The places I've gone, the experiences I've had; the sheer number of scenes visualized through that lens. Almost my entire flick photos stream was shot with this one lens. I probably won't part with it. I've still got nearly every camera I've ever owned. Very sentimental about these things. They are not packed away either. My old SLR film cameras are right here in my office and I look at them every day, though haven't used one in years. They mean that much to me.

A Garrity eight-LED utility light, one of four I bought fifteen years ago. (Amazingly, the Woot.com listing, amusing write-up and all, is still live even though their offer was good for only one day in February, 2009.)

These lights came in very handy back when I was still handling 35mm film for the two film festivals I supported, for film inspection.

Perched on a cliff on the central California coast, 50 miles south of San Francisco, the 115-foot Pigeon Point Lighthouse, one of the tallest lighthouses on the West Coast, has been guiding mariners since 1872. Its five-wick lard oil lamp, and first-order Fresnel (pronounced fra-nel) lens, was first lit at sunset, November 15, 1872. Although the original Fresnel lens is no longer in use, the lighthouse is still an active U.S. Coast Guard aid to navigation using an automated LED (light-emitting diode) beacon.

...Light, both old-school and high-tech.

The filament structure of a classic incandescent projection lamp from a 16mm movie projector. This lamp was simple in design but very energy-inefficient (this 750-watt lamp barely had enough oomph to satisfactorily light a smaller classroom screen, albeit with a yellowish tinge; more recent xenon-arc technology enabled higher-end 16mm projectors to produce a much brighter and whiter light with the same 750 watts of power, enough for mid-sized auditorium screens). Like a similar picture I posted a year earlier, this 120-volt lamp was run at a low voltage, about 10-15 volts.

The bokeh is courtesy of a wadded string of LED Christmas lights, requiring a mere 4.8 watts to power the 60-bulb string.

Power restored!

After 22 hours without electricity the lights came back on at 03:08.

I don't know what woke me but at about 05:00 yesterday morning I was awake and in total darkness - unusual as the alarm cock and various devices charging normally emit a a gentle red glow. So after a few minutes of internal debate (go back to sleep / see what’s wrong) I found the torch (flash light) amongst the rest of the "junk" on the bed side table and started staggering around the house.

No power anywhere, no "trips" (breakers blown) - nothing to reset. On venturing outside a solitary street light could be seen glimmering forlornly in the distance.

Time to call the "national power" people --- no electricity; no phones. Fortunately the mobile phone still had charge.

"No sir we have no reports of a fault in your area"! Well you have now!

"We will send an engineer". after about an hour the power came back on for a few minutes then went off then on then off then on then off and stayed off.

To be honest the power people "Western Power Distribution" were good with their communication

- a text message saying more engineers coming, a little later a man knocked on the door and said they were investigating and should have the power back within an hour.

An hour later another knock on the door and a text message -it will now be 3 hours as there is an underground cable fault.

So I went out for an hour and stopped off for coffee. - On my return I asked the power guys (now several of them standing round looking worried) is the power back on?

"yes but you missed it by going out - we are turning it off again as we have to dig up the street to get at the fault - it will take about 4 hours".

(confirmed a few minutes later by text).

4 hours later a text message "it will be another 2 hours".

2 hours later a knock on the door and a nice guy in a high vis vest informs me that its caused by a burst water main and the water company will be another 3 hours before they can get here - the electricity guys can't fix the fault as their hole keeps filling up with water and their pumps can't cope with the flow. (confirmed by text message a few minutes later).

Further text messages, further delays - eventually I went to bed when it got dark.

03:08 this morning the lights all popped back on, chargers bleeped as did the high temperature alarms on the freezer.

So after checking round and resetting the breaker on the down stairs ring main twice (odd) everything was back to normal and I went back to bed for a few hours.

Makes you realise how heavily we rely on electricity.

Volcano emits a little smoke as the sun sets on beautiful Tropea on the Mediterranean Sea.

These were inspired by the Cantwell class Arrestor cruiser seen in Andor, the TIE Arrestor is an Imperial starfighter with two powerful tractor beam emitter dishes. It can be deployed to intercept, disable and tow Rebel starfighters suspected of stealing Imperial technology. It can also be used to capture Rebel personnel wanted for questioning.

This Imperial squadron has a purple accent colour, suggested by lamborghiniwafflesauce as the nemesis for Teal Squadron – the Imperial squadron leader’s TIE Arrestor is the one with more purple on it.

Thanks to Inthert for inspiration for the round cockpit design, who in turn was inspired TWP.

High energy photons are emitted in energy transitions of particles in the nucleus of atoms. The release of energy into photons and energetic particles is a defining feature of the thermonuclear furnaces streaking across this three hour composite image. That same release of energy from atomic nuclei fuzing or fracturing forms the basis for nuclear weapons, first realized in the weapons of war just beyond the horizon in this image. While the light pollution from Los Alamos makes for a poetic counterpoint to the star trails overhead, it really is the result of much more common (and benign) energy exchanges and scattering from smoke particulates. Maybe our uses of photons can aspire to be life giving and sustaining like ones overhead in this image.

As a star trail image, I was shooting for better, but as a nightscape scene, I appreciate it and enjoy the range of color and phenomena in the sky. I hope you enjoy the benign use of the photons I collected to compose this image for your enjoyment and appreciation of the beauty we still have.

Hopefully you do too!

Peace and cheers!
