One of these days I'm going to have to rent something cool so I can shoot it properly instead of grabbing them off the streets. :)

Before the almost obligatory oval reigned, car emblems — and the cars themselves... — came in all shapes and sizes. I photographed this rather wide Chevy logo on a 1953 Chevrolet Bel Air at the 2014 Santa Bárbara “State Street Nationals” car show.

... der Verbrauch des schnellen Diesel-Jaguar.

 

Bei gleichmäßiger und vorausschauender Fahrweise ist der Sechszylinder fast so sparsam wie ein Vierzylinder. Auf unserer Landstraßen-Normrunde ermittelten wir einen Schnitt von 5,5 Liter Diesel je 100 Kilometer. Wer auf der Autobahn den Tempomat auf 140 km/h einstellt, rollt mit einem Schnitt von 6,5 Litern durch die Republik.

 

Selbst schnelle Fahrer dürfen sich über die sehr zurückhaltenden Trinksitten ihres tieffliegenden Engländers freuen. So frei kann eine Autobahn gar nicht sein, dass der Spritkonsum die 11-Liter-Marke übersteigt.

 

Nur bei unserer Sportrunde im hügeligen Voralpenland, die schon aufgrund der Topografie einen hohen Volllastanteil beinhaltet, erlaubte sich der Diesel S mit 12,4 Litern einen Ausreißer nach oben.

 

Minus:

 

Besonders im Stadtverkehr wirkt der Jaguar unelegant steifbeinig. Querfugen und Schlaglöcher werden spürbar an die Passagiere weitergeleitet. Je höher die Geschwindigkeit, desto ausgewogener federt der Jaguar. Einzige Ausnahme sind wellige Autobahnen, auf denen der Wagen sanft vor sich hin hoppelt.

This grill was on a rat rod roadster that had a licence plate on it from 1930 which generally means that the car is a 1930 model which certainly looked like it could be the case. However I looked at a lot of images from the early 20's to mid 30's and couldn't find a Plymouth grill that looked exactly like this. I did find pictures of some trunk emblems that matched this one from that era. Perhaps this is a trunk emblem mounted on some other grill. Mysteries abound, particularly with rat rods.

Some background information:

 

Andechs Abbey is a Benedictine monastery in the administrative district of Starnberg in Upper Bavaria. It is situated on a hill east of the Ammersee (in English: "Lake Ammer") between the two lakes of Ammersee and Starnberg. The abbey, which is Bavaria’s second most important place of pilgrimage (after Altoetting), is located about 30 km (19 miles) to the southwest of the city of Munich.

 

The site of Andechs was originally occupied by a castle belonging to the counts of Diessen on the Ammersee. In 1080, the castle that was probably built on a Roman castrum was first mentioned in a document. For many decades it remained the seat of the powerful counts of Diessen-Andechs and dukes of Andechs-Merania, after the count had donated his ancestral seat at Diessen to the Holy See in 1132.

 

In 1174, Saint Hedwig of Andechs was born at Andechs. She was one of eight children born to Berthold IV, Count of Diessen-Andechs and Duke of Istria. At the age of twelve, Hedwig had to marry Henry I the Bearded, son and heir of the Silesian Piast duke Boleslaus the Tall. In 1238, upon his death, Henry was buried at a Cistercian monastery of nuns, Trzebnica Abbey, which he had established in 1202 at Hedwig's request.

 

The widow moved into the monastery and invited many German religious people from the Holy Roman Empire into the Silesian lands, as well as German settlers who founded numerous cities, towns and villages. In 1243, Hedwig died and was buried in Trzebnica Abbey next to her husband, while relics of her are preserved at Andechs Abbey and St. Hedwig's Cathedral in Berlin.

 

Hedwig had always lived a very pious life. She had supported her husband in donating the Augustinian provostry at Nowogród Bobrzański and the commandery of the Knights Templar at Oleśnica Mała. She had also always helped the poor, the widows and the orphans, founded several hospitals for the sick and the lepers and donated all her fortune to the Church. In 1267, she was canonized by Pope Clement IV. Today, Hedwig is the patron saint of Silesia, Andechs, the city of Goerlitz and the St. Hedwig's Cathedral in Berlin. Furthermore, she is also looked upon as the patroness of the reconciliation between the Polish and the Germans.

 

But back to the history of Andechs Abbey: In 1208, when Philip of Swabia, King of Germany, was assassinated at Bamberg by Otto of Wittelsbach, members of the house of Andechs were implicated. As a result, the castle at Andechs was razed before the family could be rehabilitated. After the dukes' direct male line of Andechs-Merania had been extinguished in 1248, the entire region was annexed by the bishop of Bamberg.

 

However, the history of Andechs as a pilgrimage site is even much longer than the history as a monastery. In 955, relics brought from Rome and the Holy Land by Rasso, count of Diessen, to his monastery at Woerth were transferred to the so-called holy mountain of Andechs to preserve them from the ravages of the Hungarians. In the 12th century three hosts, reputed to have been consecrated by Pope Gregory I and Pope Leo IX, were added to the relics, which were treasured in the castle back then.

 

The first documented pilgrimages to Andechs took place in 1138, when count Berthold II ordered his subjects to make the journey to venerate the relics in the castle chapel of St Nicholas. The legendary rediscovery of long-lost reliquaries in 1388 revived the ancient pilgrimage trade. At that time, the Andechs hosts were approved by Cardinal Nicholas of Cusa, otherwise a foe of such cults of wonder hosts.

 

In 1455, the late-Gothic collegiate church which Duke Ernest I had erected in 1423 was changed into a Benedictine monastery by Duke Albert III. It was filled with monks from Tegernsee Abbey. In 1458, Andechs was also raised to the status of an abbey. Henceforth, it enjoyed a long period of uninterrupted prosperity until the Bavarian secularisation of 1803. In 1712, the abbey was completely remodeled in Baroque style.

 

In 1850, Andechs Abbey was refounded as a Benedictine priory and affiliated to the Abbey of St Boniface in Munich soon afterwards. In 1982, the German composer Carl Orff, best known for his scenic cantata Carmina Burana, was buried in the church. Between 1998 and 2015, the Carl Orff festival took place at Andechs each summer. In 2015, it was ceased due to a lawsuit between the abbey and the Carl Orff foundation.

 

Today, Andechs Abbey is still a much frequented place of pilgrimage. But there are also many people, who don’t visit the monastery for its relics and their hope for healing, but for the great beer that is brewed in the abbey brewery. Beer has been brewed in Andechs ever since the monastery was founded in 1455 and the brewery also comprises an inn and a beer garden. So if you are not so religious, there are still some good reasons to visit Andechs Abbey.

 

The abbey brewery produces eight different types of beer and has an annual production of more than 100,000 hectolitres. About five per cent of the total production are consumed in the beer garden on the holy mountain. That’s why brewery and beer garden are the abbey’s most important economic factors and its main sources of earnings.

This is a rare example of the first products of the DAF Truck Company.

The brothers Hub and Wim van Doorne started a machine factory in 1928 in Eindhoven, Netherlands. In 1932 the company's name was changed to "Van Doorne's Aanhangwagenfabriek", in short: DAF (aanhangwagen means trailer, Anhänger or remorque). Only in the early 1950s the company started tot built trucks. In 1958 the first passenger car was presented, the Daf 600. Meanwhile the production of trailers was continued, but they were of less importance.

 

This trailer is in use as a storage container for a moving company, and on this place for more than 25 years.

Porsche Panamera Turbo S

For the majority of 1989, BR large logo 37407 'Loch Long' complete with Scottie dog emblem was allocated to Cardiff Canton. In late November it was allocated to cover several workings on the Table 131 Cardiff to Birmingham New Street via Worcester axis and I managed to record it passing Smethwick West station with the 2M26 09:10 Cardiff Central to BNS on its final day. The locomotive would soon be re-liveried into Intercity Mainline colours and return to operate on the Scotrail network from early 1990.
