It is quite apparent that the Decatur Junction Railroad doesn't do much track maintenance on the former Illinois Central Charter Line in Macon, Illinois. The view is looking north toward Decatur.

A couple of years ago a group decided to pull the elevator down. FAILED! They attached a cable to the elevator with the intention of pulling it down. When they started pulling the cable ripped through the middle of the elevator. You can see the cable hanging and the rip which started at the top and went down.

This is where you will find me most days- on top of an elevator performing annual inspections....keeping them safe for the public.

Soo...I found an elevator shaft in a cemetery. Where do you think it goes? (BTW: "Addams" of "The Addams Family" is spelled with two "Ds" - not the same family, unless the second "D" got dropped during immigration - happened a lot back in the day)

A grain elevator on the train tracks behind my sister's house. Many a time was spent playing around the tracks as a kid!

So, this is the first photo from the trip so far… it's also the first photo taken and processed with my new neutral density filters (15-stop). The exposure was 2 min. 43 sec. I used NIK Silver Efex 2 Pro for the b/w conversion.

WEEK 41 – Wolfchase Sears Closing, Set IX (UL)

My breath on that last description totally wasted, we’ll wrap up today with one more look at that corner just ahead, which also happens to be home to the store’s elevator (as evidenced by the nice, convenient “elevator” sign there. Lovely how that works out). The tiny alcove headed out of view on the left of this frame was yet another depository of disused fixtures – including the pile of floor mats that I used waaaaay back in January to tease this whole stour! – while more immediately to my left was the bedding and bath department, which somehow it appears I completely neglected to photograph. Maybe because it had actual aisles, and thus looked relatively normal compared to the rest of the place?! Who knows, lol :P In any case, I’ll leave y’all today with a link over to l_dawg2000’s Wolfchase Sears albums (plural!), since he did happen to capture a few pics of those aisles to make up for my shortcomings. As a reminder, l_dawg also toured the other Memphis Sears, over at Southland Mall in Whitehaven, which I didn’t visit at all; you can view that album of his here. Both Memphis Sears stores closed during former parent company Sears Holdings’ 2018 bankruptcy, with the Wolfchase store closing up shop on January 6th, 2019 (the sale having begun on October 27th of last year), and the Whitehaven store following suit on January 27th.

Robby and John just picked “Closing Time” by Semisonic, which is perfectly appropriate as I close out today’s photoset! Join me next week – more from Lowe's Foods

These places are public so these photos are too, but just as I tell where they came from, I'd appreciate if you'd say who :)

Light at the end of the elevator!

Please view the large one on a dark background, much better!

At the Royal York Hotel; Toronto, Ontario.

After a bunch of discussion on Reddit and Facebook, it was determined that this is probably an old elevator brake, likely discarded by scrappers due to it's extreme weight.

The grain elevator I created for Brick Train Depot was a logical industry choice for a rural setting like this. It looks right at home among the crop fields and is a perfect compliment to the feed mill on the other side of the module.

I shot this at Redondo Beach Harbor a few months ago. It was near the end of the shoot, and we were getting a little silly by this point. I first tried shooting the model in front of the closed doors, which looked ok. Then the doors unexpectedly opened, and people got out!

I realized that the shot looked better with the doors open, and instructed my hair stylist/second lighting assistant to get in the elevator for an edge light. We had to shoot while the door was open, and then the stylist would get taken to a different floor, and we'd wait and roll around with laughter until she got back. Fun!

Both lights are Nikon SB-28s. Main light is through a 43" shoot-through umbrella, camera right. Edge light in the elevator is probably through a Lumiquest Softbox III. Cybersyncs for trggering.

The University Square shopping center was opened in 2003. Today the shopping center has Target, Macy's and T.J. Maxx / Homegoods (Target and Macy's own the property their stores are on). University Square once featured a Tops grocery store on the bottom level but it closed just a year later in 2006 when Tops closed all their Ohio locations. Retailers such as Jo-Ann Fabrics, Foot Locker, Famous Footwear, and Pier 1 Imports have all either closed or relocated elsewhere. Some spaces in the shopping center were never filled to begin with. Currently (late 2016), only one non-anchor store, T.J. Maxx / Homegoods, remains at University Square, but plans to move to nearby Oakwood Commons. Applebee's also still has a restaurant in the shopping center. Today, there are talks about possible mixed-use redevelopment plans for University Square

The shopping center has five levels of parking and staggered store levels. 1- Access to Macy's and Applebee's, 2- Empty Tops Friendly Market level, 3- Access to Macy's, T.J. Maxx / Homegoods, and Target, 4- just for parking, 5- second level of Target.
