A star, lit up like a cigar

Strung out like a guitar

Maybe you can educate my mind

Explain all these controls

Can't sing but I've got soul

The goal is elevation

High, higher than the sun

You shoot me from a gun

I need you to elevate me here

At the corner of your lips

As the orbit of your hips

Eclipse

You elevate my soul

I've got no self control

Been living like a mole now

Going down, excavation

I and I, in the sky

You make me feel like I can fly

So high

Love

Lift me out of these blues

Won't you tell me something true

I believe in you

This is about 140 meters higher in elevation than the location in the previous photo. Here, the autumn foliage would soon come to an end.

Envole-toi bien loin de ces miasmes morbides ;

S'élancer vers les champs lumineux et sereins ;

Pinkshell Azalea makes a great perch to pair a warbler with. The beautiful blooms are relatively small for an azalea which helps lessen the chance of obstructed views once the bird is on the perch. They are in bloom early in May at elevation when the warblers are returning to their breeding grounds. There are only a handful of counties where they occur naturally but this azalea is also available commercially and thus occurs sporadically outside of its historic range.

My last two shots were from ~8,000 feet (2,438 meters), and this shot was at 6,000 feet (1,828 meters). It's amazing how a small change in altitude impacts how wet an area is. This area received rain and was quickly absorbed by the ground and higher up is snow.

With no particular motivation other than the hope of a nice sunrise I headed for Blast Beach on Sunday morning. I did manage a shot I was pleased with before it started raining and I performed a temporary pack down. As I waited out the rain it dawned on me that the combination of the very lively sea and the strong northerly winds would probably be seeing some big wave crashes at the harbour. With 20 minutes still to go to sun up I rushed up the beach banks and made the short drive to the harbour to find I was right. A chilly wait eventually saw the break in the clouds coincide with a suitable wave crash and I had my shot..

Above the lakes, above the vales,

The mountains and the woods, the clouds, the seas,

Beyond the sun, beyond the ether,

Beyond the confines of the starry spheres,

My soul, you move with ease,

And like a strong swimmer in rapture in the wave

You wing your way blithely through boundless space

With virile joy unspeakable.

Fly far, far away from this baneful miasma

And purify yourself in the celestial air,

Drink the ethereal fire of those limpid regions

As you would the purest of heavenly nectars.

Beyond the vast sorrows and all the vexations

That weigh upon our lives and obscure our vision,

Happy is he who can with his vigorous wing

Soar up towards those fields luminous and serene,

He whose thoughts, like skylarks,

Toward the morning sky take flight

Who hovers over life and understands with ease

The language of flowers and silent things!

Charles Baudelaire - Élévation

A masterpiece of poetic imagination and aesthetic exploration. Through his use of vivid imagery, compelling language and daring metaphors, Baudelaire takes his reader on a journey through the heights of human aspiration and the depths of existential despair. Imaging himself as a bird,

soaring high in the air, free from the constraints of gravity and the limitations of the earthly realm. He speaks of his desire to "breathe in the scent of the infinite azure sky," and to "bathe in the sea of the ineffable light."

This is taken at about 9,700 ft elevation, trees won't start leafing out for another month. Lots of snow up there even though not a lot this winter, a fair amount lately. This is the headwaters of Castle Creek which flows into Aspen and the Roaring Fork River.
