Cattleya lawrenceana is a species of orchid in the genus Cattleya. It is native to Venezuela, Guyana, and Brazil, where it grows at elevations of 250 to 2,400 meters . It is a relatively rare orchid species.

This orchid is an epiphyte, meaning it grows on other plants for support. It has pseudobulbs that are about 20 centimeters tall and carry a single, oblong-lanceolate leaf that is 20 centimeters long. The flowers of Cattleya lawrenceana are large and showy, with three to five flowers per inflorescence. The flowers are typically lavender or rose-colored, with a darker lip.

Cattleya lawrenceana is a relatively easy orchid to grow, and it is a good choice for beginner orchid growers. It prefers warm to hot temperatures, with moderate to high humidity. It should be watered regularly, but allowed to dry out slightly between waterings. Cattleya lawrenceana can be fertilized monthly during the growing season with a balanced orchid fertilizer.

Autumn and orchids will arrive on March 20th in Brazil.

Higher elevations can be reached in steps. Each step almost insignificant, changes so slightly that we are unaware of the change. Once we reach the top our we can see so much more.

An early autumn snowfall in the higher elevations of Mullan Pass surrounds Montana Rail Link’s Austin Creek Trestle at Skyline, Montana, on October 11, 1997. Lower elevations toward Helena received rain, but a frosting of snow flocks the trees up on the pass, creating an unusual look to the scenery. My very good friend (and co-worker) Rebecca always looks lovely....but yesterday she came to work wearing this dress which was just fantastic on her.

I told her we could not let the day pass without a quick 10-minute photoshoot. :) Here are a few shots from our walk to the coffee shop and back. :)

Thanks Rebecca! :)

Sometimes the elevation is an advantage. And the view!

Another hot day at work.

I know blah blah blah.....

Happy Slider Sunday

A surreal dreamscape.

A tree line is the edge of a habitat at which trees are capable of growing and beyond which they are not. It is found at high elevations and high latitudes (Wikipedia). So, that isn't what this photo is all about, but It does have a nice view above a tree line anyway. It was taken in Bennington, Idaho looking toward the Preuss Range of the Rocky Mountains.

High, higher than the sun

You shoot me from a gun

I need you to elevate me here

At the corner of your lips

As the orbit of your hips

Eclipse

You elevate my soul

I've got no self control

Been living like a mole now

Going down, excavation

High and High in the sky

You make me feel like I can fly

So high

This is Eureka Gulch. It is located off of the Animas Forks Ghost Town Road. It is an easy road, but you do experience a quick elevation change, which is really why you need to have a 4wheel drive vehicle to drive it. Without it you really put a lot of stress on your brakes, and that isn't something you want to do in the mountains.

Hope to be back here the end of September.

Bachalpsee is a mountain lake close to the First above Grindelwald in the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland. The lake is located at an elevation of 2,265 m above sea.

Taken on the Luorong Pasture, Daocheng Yading.

The Yading Nature Reserve, located within Daocheng County (稻城县), Garze Autonomous Tibetan Prefecture (甘孜藏族自治州), Sichuan Province(四川省), is one of China’s most spectacular and pristine nature reserves. It contains some of Sichuan’s highest and most beautiful snow-capped peaks, located within the greater Hengduan Mountain Range, which forms the easternmost edge of the Himalayas.

The Luorong Pasture lies at an elevation of 4,180 meters and offer an amazing view of all 3 holy mountains. On the right side is Mt. Chenresig’s southeastern face. On the left side is Mt. Chana Dorje’s (known as Xia Nuo Duo Ji in Chinese) northeastern face while Mt. Jampelyang’s (Yang Mai Yong in Chinese) north face dominates the front view from the grasslands. Luorong is one of the most scenic spots in Yading.

This screw jack was used on the cannons at Fort Pulaski during the Civil War. Fort Pulaski National Monument is an impressive reminder of 19th century engineering initiative and design.

Unfortunately, the amazing work that went into building this fort on an island little more than a marshy sandbar in the Savannah River, ended up being superseded by the modernization of artillery from smooth bore to rifled cannons prior to its implementation in coastal defense. Thirty hours into the initial siege of this fort by Union forces operating from Tybee Island, the 17' thick brick walls were breached by rifled shells and the commander, Col. Charles H. Olmstead, surrendered rather than expose his troops to certain death if a magazine were to be breached by further fire.

The simplicity of the pictured mechanism is brilliant, effective, and a key component in all kinds of machines since the first century BC.

At about 3000 feet elevation, Clear Lake (Oregon) is a mountain lake formed by an ancient lava flow.

This kayak view of the vine maple in fall color on the black lava gives the impression that they are on fire. The still day provided a fine reflection.

Near Kemer, Antalya, Turkey. Never a sunset image to be had in Kemer as by late afternoon the sun has gone behind the mountains. I guess I could take the cable car up the mountain. Task for next year perhaps!
