I don’t know how we came across this rock exactly as my father used to collect interesting lumps of rock. We have granite from Cornwall which was going to be my first choice but the I remembered about this copper containing rock. There are circular holes in the rock so I assume that there must be a volcanic element to it tough I cannot be sure.

Happened to notice this scene while driving along the edge of a large thunderstorm recently. Of course my camera was at home, but I did have a smartphone. I turned around quickly and happened to be near this farm. The old windmill was perfectly positioned for the photo. The sky was full of texture and deep tones. But it was the rainbow that caught my attention. The intensity of color and brightness near the horizon was breathtaking. The moment lasted just a minute or two. The rainbow faded away right before my eyes. The event reminded me of the need to react spontaneously when the need arises. And this can be difficult when driving. The natural human tendency is to just keep on going while you debate whether or not to turn back. Had I driven on for another mile before turning around, the moment would have been lost.

This photo is part of a new series. I know, it's about time. Several years ago while shooting my Parking Deck project, I photographed some benches here and there and was on the lookout for them, but never considered doing a series. Benches are not common in parking decks. After all, people park their cars there; they don't go to sit and lounge around. Last year, a FLICKR friend, Werner (www.flickr.com/photos/96980838@N04/), suggested that I do a series on benches. I dismissed the idea but it remained in the back of my mind. Then recently I decided, why not? I discovered that while benches are everywhere, those interesting enough for photography are hard to find. There are charming, quirky, and ornamental benches enough to fill volumes. But it is not just the bench that matters, it's the setting. I was looking for locations where the bench is just one element among other interesting components, some times only one other thing, yielding a minimalist composition, other times a layered scene with many parts. Both of these, I discovered, are rare. So, the result is a short series --- something novel from me. A short, attentive series, I hope --- an experiment in quiet narratives, negative space, color and light and shadow.

These rocks tend to fascinate me. When you think about them being created from simply exposure, it is a type of art all in self. Years in the making.
Pied-billed Grebe surfaces as I'm trying to photograph a Snowy Egret. My settings were dialed in for the all-white Snowy and then the Grebe surfaced in the shadow. Serendipity!

got to stop googling stuff about the snail ( did you know they poop thru their mouth ? ) ----but they do have two sets of antenna -- the top Antennae holds the eyespot which only detects light and dark -- the two smaller antenna are for touch and smell........( to be continued ? )
