The Olympic Sculpture Park along downtown Seattle's waterfront district features all sorts of interesting and bizarre public art exhibits, but this enormous metal sculpture named "Eagle" by Alexander Calder is easily its most iconic. It's enormous too at nearly 40ft (12m) tall.

Beside the fact that I can hardly pass up light poles or power lines and poles and towers, I have an affinity for the time of day when there is still some daylight as the electric lights go on. The color of the electric lights have a special presence that passes when night comes on.

1966 by Jess (American, 1923-2004)
Born Burgess Collins, Jess had worked as an engineer on the Manhattan Project. This multimedia work is part of "Plugged In: Art and Electric Light" currently at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, California. My wife and I went there this past Friday for a mental health break while we are not able to return to our home in Altadena due to the Eaton Fire.

The back façade (Rijnhaven side) of Fenixlofts - the Fenix veem (harbor storage facility). The building dates back to 1898, it’s an early example of a modernist industrial structure without load-bearing walls. It’s redeveloped and gentrified now. The ground floor of the building is now used by the Fenix Food Factory and theCircuscentrum op De Kaap (both are the former users of the Fenix 2 building, that’s currently being redeveloped).
In the BG is the brutalist silo building of Latensteins Meelfabriek, a ´Rijksmonument´, designed in 1952 by J. J. Vegter. One of the two large scale Industrial facilties in Katendrecht that's still in operation. The height of the building is 40 m and the width of the individual silos is 4m.
Let’s recap the story of the Fenix building:
1898-1950
The Fenix 1, together with Fenix 2, once formed the giant ‘San Francisco’ veem. With a length of 300 m the then longest / largest veem in the world. The building has a complex and somewhat dramatic history which reflects the history of Rotterdam. At first, it was used as the storage facility of the HAL (Holland America Line). At the start of the second world war, the quay facilities were severely damaged during a German bombing raid The attack and at the end of the war again.
1950- end 80s
After the war San Francisco was repaired, the HAL moved its facilities to the adjacent Wilhelminapier and the ‘Van Gend en Loos’ transport company moved to the building. In 1947 a fire destroyed the middle part of it. In 1950 the two remaining parts were redeveloped on the instigation of the municipality of Rotterdam as Fenix-loods 1 and Fenix-loods 2 and the open space was partly filled by a facility building for harbour workers with washrooms, toilets and a large canteen. C.Steinweg Handelsveem became the prime user of the buildings.
End 80s till now
At the end of the 80s during the big transformation of the Rotterdam harbour, the Rijnhaven together with the adjacent Maashaven largely lost their harbour function. After a number of plans and studies in 2012 the municipality decided to redevelop both buildings as an element of the redevelopment/gentrification of the dilapidated Katendrecht quarter, which is an element of the Kop van Zuid urban restructuring masterplan plan which involves all the old harbours on the south bank of the river).
The first stage of the redevelopment was to allow temporary commercial and artistic use of the Fenix buildings. Fenix 1 was primarily used for exhibitions. In the first comment are two images made during the RAW art exhibition there.
Alas, the redevelopment of the veem, entailed something very close to the complete demolition of the edifice. This to be able to build 'Fenix lofts'.
Shown here is Rijnhaven side of the edifice.

I have finished this dollhouse, except for furnishings that I will add as I find them. I’ve got a couple small projects to do, and then it’s on to The Painted Lady I got for Christmas. I have discovered that my passion is in the building and decorating, but not in the playing and storytelling. I like my dollhouse rooms to kinda tell the story and leave it up to the viewer’s imagination. I also like ‘clean’ rooms, not filled to the brim with miniature clutter…..wish I could say the same about my real life house, lol. Hope I’m not boring you to death with my mini obsession.
The Petronas Twin Towers, the tallest twin buildings in the world, are part of a larger complex named Kuala Lumpur City Centre. The multipurpose development includes an indoor shopping mall (great to escape the heat), convention center, hotels, office buildings, outdoor park (where I took this shot) and a mosque.
Nothing really exciting about this twilight shot, but it sure beats working in a small cubicle all day long in one of those office towers.
Question of the day: Do you like working indoors or outdoors?

Tullow Street, Carlow, Co. Carlow on a fine day with not too much happening. Dominated by a large religious institution on the right and with a T-junction in the distance this must have been a quiet street outside of school time? (By the way, well done to all on the information gleaned on the two Walker shots earlier this week! Even though his slides are relatively recent, so much has changed in the interim - making them truly invaluable now!)
While the streetscape here has changed significantly since, unlike the Walker shots, the main subject does survive. And that subject, the Carlow Convent National School, are the main thing that help us date this image. Specifically, we know that we are after 1899 (date on gable plaque) and before 1906 (the date of a postcard version of this image)....

Years ago, I use to make dollhouses and furniture, but circumstances weren’t great for such large projects, so I stopped. Recently, I reconnected with a friend on Instagram, that I knew back in the late 80’s, while we were living in Germany. She makes dollhouses and I’ve gotten the itch again.
SO…..for my first project back into the fray of tiny things, I’m using a very large lantern to construct my first house in many years. To prepare it, I have replaced the four glass sides with plexiglass. The ‘roof’ has come off for accessibility, but will be put back at the end.
Tomorrow, I will cut the floors, measure the height of each floor, and prepare the pieces for wiring of the lights.
I will also add pre-turned legs to the base. I want it to be more of a ‘piece of furniture’.
The house will have a theme, but more on that later.
