Billy Kirkham, waterskiing in Oban Bay in 1974 in support of Iain MacCormick. Iain MacCormick first contested Argyll at the 1970 General Election. In February 1974 he became the SNP MP for Argyll and held this seat until 1979.

Some polls show a close race among three of the candidates – Democrat Rick Weiland, Republican Mike Rounds and Independent Larry Pressler – with Independent Gordon Howie far behind. They are seeking the seat held by Sen. Tim Johnson (D), who is retiring.

Political candidates participating in the upcoming elections, from the opposition parties and the coalition, were able to share their platforms in an open and transparent setting. Candidates showed civility toward one another and shared ideas that reflected genuine democratic participation.

An elections-related booklet prepared by Kuwait Transparency Society to inform the public about the electoral process. About 30 international observers, mostly from the Arab Network for Election Democracy, will monitor the election, along with 300 local volunteers. About 285 candidates are running in the polls to elect a new 50-member National Assembly (parliament).
