This night photograph was taken in Zhuo Zhuang Ancient Town during our visit last June. Zhuo Zhuang is a historic water town of nearly 1000 years, and is considered to be China’s Number 1 water town.

This photograph captured the captivating scene of boats in the canal. The reflections of variously illuminated buildings on either side of the canal, arch bridge and boats added to the historic feel of the watertown.

Best wishes for a wonderful weekend!

The males are looking very classy at this time of the year but the females aren't too bad either. Females can be very variable from a rich chestnut to very pale birds

This is either a male or female breeding American White Pelican.

Both genders have a flat horn near the end of the bill called a "nuptial tubercle" This protuberance falls off when incubation commences.

Males and females appear similar. The female is slightly smaller, and has brighter orange facial skin in the breeding season. It is hard to make those distictions in the field.

Female spiders produce either one egg sac containing several to a thousand eggs or several egg sacs each with successively fewer eggs. Females of many species die after producing the last egg sac. Others provide care for the young for some period of time; these females live one or, at most, two years. Females of the mygalomorph spiders may live up to 25 years and those of the primitive haplogyne spiders up to 10 years.

The protective egg sac surrounding the eggs of most spiders is made of silk. Although a few spiders tie their eggs together with several strands of silk, most construct elaborate sacs of numerous layers of thick silk. Eggs, which often have the appearance of a drop of fluid, are deposited on a silk pad and then wrapped and covered so that the finished egg sac is spherical or disk-shaped. The females of many species place the egg sac on a stalk, attach it to a stone, or cover it with smooth silk before abandoning it. Other females guard their egg sacs or carry them either in their jaws or attached to the spinnerets.

Alot of people stop on the corner between Glenuig and Roshven. On a clear, sunny day it is a fantastic viewpoint either out to the small Isles of Muck, Eigg and Rum or inland up Loch Ailort with the mountains on either side. Too often the view is stunning but I can't decide whether to stop and take a picture. It's easy to say it will look this gorgeous any other day and drive on by. Today, with a bit of extra wind I just had to have a go at a panoramic shot (4 images)

The forms of the landscape on this ridge were either beautiful or bizarre.

It was strange to peer at the sky through the small opening on the left. From certain angles I could see distant landmarks through the opening.

The mangled shrub remnant on the right couldn't have been any more fitting for the place. It had just that certain feeling of character and history to it.

This species has an interesting life history because of its association with Lasius ants. The larvae live inside the ants' nests and, according to various sources, they feed either on the larvae of ants or root aphids farmed by the ants. The males have a cute courtship flight, during which they look like they are bouncing up and down in the air.

Boxford Roman mosaic is a mosaic at Boxford near Newbury, West Berkshire, England, rediscovered during an archaeological dig in August 2017. It dates from the Roman period. The 4th century (AD) mosaic is over 6 metres long. Its central panel is thought to show Bellerophon, at the court of either Iobates or Proteus, battling Chimera.

Anthony Beeson, an expert on Roman mosaics, said it is "without question the most exciting mosaic discovery made in Britain in the last 50 years and must take a premier place amongst those Romano-British works of art that have come down to modern Britons".

The mosaic was uncovered during a community archaeology project, investigating three Roman sites near to the village of Boxford, which was led by the Boxford History Project, the Berkshire Archaeology Research Group and Cotswold Archaeology, which began in 2011. Earlier in 2017, a villa "of modest size" was unearthed at Boxford. The mosaic was found at the southern end of this building. Only one half of the mosaic was uncovered. It was subsequently reburied, to ensure its preservation.

Further archaeology was undertaken in 2019 and an open day for the public occurred on Saturday 31st August 2019,

It will be covered again to preserve it for posterity.

She puts her hands on either side of his face, and the room falls away. He has never gotten so lost in a kiss before. And then, the space between them explodes. His heart keeps missing beats and his hands cannot bring her close enough to him. He tastes her and realizes he has been starving. He has loved before, but it didn't feel like this. He has kissed before, but it didn't burn him alive. Maybe it lasts a minute, and maybe it's an hour. All he knew is that kiss, and how soft her skin is when it brushes against him, and that even if he did not know it until now, He has been waiting for this person forever.

Grey Heron - Ardea Cinerea

The grey heron (Ardea cinerea) is a long-legged predatory wading bird of the heron family, Ardeidae, native throughout temperate Europe and Asia and also parts of Africa. It is resident in much of its range, but some populations from the more northern parts migrate southwards in autumn. A bird of wetland areas, it can be seen around lakes, rivers, ponds, marshes and on the sea coast. It feeds mostly on aquatic creatures which it catches after standing stationary beside or in the water or stalking its prey through the shallows.

The birds breed colonially in spring in "heronries", usually building their nests high in trees. A clutch of usually three to five bluish-green eggs is laid. Both birds incubate the eggs for a period of about 25 days, and then both feed the chicks, which fledge when seven or eight weeks old. Many juveniles do not survive their first winter, but if they do, they can expect to live for about five years.

In Ancient Egypt, the deity Bennu was depicted as a heron in New Kingdom artwork. In Ancient Rome, the heron was a bird of divination. Roast heron was once a specially-prized dish; when George Neville became Archbishop of York in 1465, four hundred herons were served to the guests.

The grey heron has a slow flight, with its long neck retracted (S-shaped). This is characteristic of herons and bitterns, and distinguishes them from storks, cranes, and spoonbills, which extend their necks.

Fish, amphibians, small mammals and insects are taken in shallow water with the heron's long bill. It has also been observed catching and killing juvenile birds such as ducklings, and occasionally takes birds up to the size of a water rail. It may stand motionless in the shallows, or on a rock or sandbank beside the water, waiting for prey to come within striking distance. Alternatively, it moves slowly and stealthily through the water with its body less upright than when at rest and its neck curved in an "S". It is able to straighten its neck and strike with its bill very fast.

Small fish are swallowed head first, and larger prey and eels are carried to the shore where they are subdued by being beaten on the ground or stabbed by the bill. They are then swallowed, or have hunks of flesh torn off. For prey such as small mammals and birds or ducklings, the prey is held by the neck and either drowned, suffocated, or killed by having its neck snapped with the heron's beak, before being swallowed whole. The bird regurgitates pellets of indigestible material such as fur, bones and the chitinous remains of insects. The main periods of hunting are around dawn and dusk, but it is also active at other times of day. At night it roosts in trees or on cliffs, where it tends to be gregarious.

Today we honor the mothers in our lives, who have one of the most important jobs in the world and also one of the most difficult at times. A job that brings great joy to mothers and awakens a love like they have never experienced until giving birth.

A mother will do anything to protect her children, even if it means walking through fire, jumping into a turbulent ocean or river to save their child from drowning, fighting off someone attacking her child. Whatever it is, she will lay down her life to save that of her child.

I know I would. Even though both my daughters are well into their 40s now, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I would give my life for either of them if I had to for any reason.

So Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there. Enjoy your day to the max. You all deserve it.

This photo is a repost from many years ago but it has always been one of my favorite Mama grizz and cub photos. The quality isn't the best but it's the feeling it gives me when I look at it that is important to me. It is like the mama is imparting something very important to her cub and wants him/her to pay close attention and the cub appears to be listening intently.

It was close to 10 PM when I took this shot.

Smile On Saturday: "Portray The Name Of A Music Band" theme

Per Wikipedia: "They Might Be Giants" (often abbreviated as TMBG) is an American alternative rock band formed in 1982 by John Flansburgh and John Linnell. During TMBG's early years, Flansburgh and Linnell frequently performed as a duo, often accompanied by a drum machine. In the early 1990s, TMBG expanded to include a backing band... The group is known for their uniquely experimental and absurdist style of alternative music, typically using surreal, humorous lyrics and unconventional instruments in their songs.

The small, picturesque, terraced houses that sit either side of a cobbled street, were originally built to house a vicar each. They were built by Bishop Ralph of Shrewsbury and were occupied as early as 1348. (Some say that Vicars’ Close can lay claim to being the only completely medieval street left in England, others state it’s the oldest continually inhabited residential street in Europe.) Either way, Vicars’ Close in Wells is beautifully preserved.

Back in the 14th century there was housing for 42 Vicars – 22 sets of single chambers on the east side and 20 on the west. As you would expect, the houses were very basic and didn’t have a front garden.

Over the centuries minor concessions have been made. In the 15th century, Bishop Bubwith allowed 19 1/2 feet to be walled off in front of each house to be used as a front garden. In the 1660s some of the houses were allowed to be leased by ‘strangers’. According to ‘The Vicars’ Close’ by Hugh Parnell, 12 of the most decayed houses were allowed to be rented by “persons of good and honest reputation as will covenaunt to rebuild and repair them at their owne proper costs and charges.” ‘Strangers’ have been allowed to inhabit Vicars’ Close ever since. Today’s residents of Vicars’ Close include all 12 men of the Vicars Choral, the organists, and virgers.

Vicars’ Close is currently made up of 27 houses, a chapel, a library, treasury and muniment room (a storage room for historical documents). There is also a dining hall which is connected to the Cathedral by a walkway.

The Knot Grass caterpillar (Acronicta rumicis) munching on a flower bud of Armeria “Ballerina Red” in the garden. It was almost a full-grown caterpillar and wasn’t seen on the next day. It either decided to change the diet or, more likely, pupates somewhere quietly now – so not much damage done. Interestingly, this common, widely spread and inconspicuous (cannot say the same about its caterpillar) moth had its population declined by two thirds over the last 50 years and is now on the list of Priority species in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. Who can resist a Ferrari huh? Especially one in Rosso Corsa!

I think the Ferrari 458 was the prettiest Ferrari since the Testarossa in the 1980s but this Ferrari 488 is quite a looker too!

Annoyingly I focused on the swage line which tricked my camera into focusing on the road reflections, thus making the car slightly out of focus. I should have focused on the wheels! Oh well, an imperfect shot of the model after the really pretty 458 so it's imperfect all 'round - and it is parked on double yellow lines so imperfection all around. I took this in a hurry for my train and didn't even bother to change my f-stop to have better focus range either. Still a beauty to look at though. Enjoy!

Either a Blue Swallowtail or a Red Spotted Purple, I'm not sure because she was a little far and so fluttering, but she is definitely BLUE :D

Brill windmill dates to the 1680s and ground flour until 1919. It was one of several mills on the common, but the others have either been moved or demolished. Brill had several mills because the parish was quite wealthy, having made its money through potting, tiling and brick making.

I remember that marvellous sunset on Koh Tao, an island north of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. I had walked into the sea to capture the scenery photographically and was knee-deep in the water until I felt something like a sting or bite in my lower right leg. All I remember is that I hit it and immediately left the water. On the beach I then saw about 20 small skin lesions like punctures from a biopsy with a diameter of about 1 mm and the leg was bleeding quite profusely. Jellyfish alarm! Fortunately, we hadn't been far from our little hotel and I got vinegar for the wound there straight away. You actually use this to loosen a stuck jellyfish, but it didn't do any harm either. Unfortunately, I didn't have my emergency allergy kit for such cases (antihistamine, cortisone and an adrenaline pen) with me, but had it in my hotel room...;) That could have ended badly. I was really glad I hadn't gone swimming in the sea (I never do it after sunset). In Thailand, there are always deaths from large-scale contact with devil jellyfish. In a situation like that, you actually are shocked at first.

Yes, when you travel a lot, the strangest things happen to you. Once a snake flew towards us at the waterfall, that wasn't so funny either. But the number one story so far was when we were caught by a current in the sea. Horror stories, luckily we survived.

Thanks for your visit, danke für Euren Besuch!

This gorgeous Snowy Owl was indeed a wonderful catch on my trip up north. Actually not spotted in the bog rather near Duluth MN, near a small regional airport. It was first spotted on a snow mound and flew away. We followed over to a building rooftop to take further shots.

It is about 20" tall and either a Female or young male with that dark spotted head. The older males more white shows in plumage.
