Whinchat - Saxicola Rubetra (M)
The whinchat is a solitary species, favouring open grassy country with rough vegetation and scattered small shrubs. It perches in elevated locations ready to pounce on the insects and other small invertebrates that form its diet. The nest is built by the female on the ground in coarse vegetation, with a clutch of four to seven eggs being laid. The hen incubates the eggs for about thirteen days and then both parents feed the nestlings. Fledging takes place about eighteen days after hatching and the parents continue to feed the young for another fortnight. Moulting takes place in late summer before the migration southwards, and again on the wintering grounds in Africa before the migration northwards in spring. The whinchat is a common species with a wide range and the International Union for Conservation of Nature has classified it as being of least concern.
Fairly common but local summer migrant from winter grounds in Africa. Found in open country on heathland, moorland, rough grassland, often with bracken. Perches atop bushes and on fences, dropping to the ground to feed, where usually hops briefly before flying back up to a perch. Male distinctive, with bold white eyebrow, dark cheeks, and peachy-orange breast. Female duller but with ghosting of male pattern, especially pale eyebrow. In flight shows distinctive white bases to sides of tail.

If you dont know what today is your missing out. Today is the opening of Fantasy Fair. As we all know Plastik is a major sponsor of the Fantasy Fair. This year they are on a sim called Sirens Lore. This event is a huge fundraiser for Relay For Life. This year there are eighteen beautiful sims. meant to spark the imagination and fill you with wonder. With so much shopping and a quest and so much more. Fantasy Fair is an event that as a role player I always looking forward to. Last year the event raised just under 70,000 US dollars for cancer research. That was over 17 million linden. So lets all do our part and try and raise even more. Plastik is an amazing place to start. They have a bunch of new releases for this event. My favorite this year are the Aryini Lian Dress and the Kinins Crystals. Both of these are perfect for any magically inclined creatures or just for fun. The Aryini Lian Dress comes in a couple different materials and is made for the maitreya, hourglass, legacy, isis, and freya bodies. So make your way down to Fantasy Fair and check out all of the amazing offerings. I am certain you will not leave disappointed or empty handed.

DESCRIPTION OF HISTORIC PLACE
Gairloch Gardens is located at 1306 Lakeshore Road on the south side of Lakeshore Road, along the shore of Lake Ontario in the Town of Oakville. The property consists of a three storey stone and stucco residence that was constructed from 1923 to 1924.
The property was designated by the Town of Oakville in 1986 for its heritage value under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act (By-law 1986-192).
HERITAGE VALUE
Located at 1306 Lakeshore Road, Gairloch Gardens is a lake estate associated with two prominent Oakville locals. Colonel W.G. MacKendrick had the home built for his family in 1923. Upon his death, Toronto investment banker, James Gairdner, purchased the estate. Gairdner named the estate “Gairloch” after a small Scottish town. Upon Gairdner's death in 1972 the estate was bequeathed to the Town of Oakville for use as a park and gallery for contemporary artists.
Gairloch Gardens is a good example of Tudor style residence. Typical of this style is the stone and stucco exterior and steeply pitched roof. Continuing with this style are the tall narrow fenestrations with multi paned windows. The hip roof features a prominent cross gable with exposed beams between the first and second storey. The estate has many unique attributes such as a meandering stream, pond and formal gardens.
CHARACTER-DEFINING ELEMENTS
Character defining elements that contribute to the heritage value of Gairloch Gardens include the:
- proximity to Lake Ontario
- three storey stone and stucco exterior
- hip roof
- prominent cross gable
- original twelve and eighteen paned windows
- two large stone chimneys with decorative chimney pots
- exposed beams
- meandering stream
- pond
- formal garden areas within the park setting
My father was eighteen years old when he built this inch and a half scale Milwaukee Road GP9 out of wood and metal. There were no scale drawings available at the time for this venerable locomotive, so dad (as I did) would always be found trackside or riding on the local patrol. While dad rode the patrol, he would take measurements of the GP9 and notes which would aid in building this massive EMD GP9. Pa is eighty five now and still building large trains, not this large however, garden railroad size.

“Jewellery is a very personal thing… it should tell a story about the person who’s wearing it.” – Garance Doré (French photographer, illustrator, author and fashion blogger).
Most of us are attracted to certain pieces of jewellery because of their aesthetic, and I am no different, however sometimes the jewellery has additional appeal because of its historical context or family connection, or sometimes the piece holds a secret quirk. In this photograph we have a homemade lucky silver sixpence brooch made up with a George VI sixpence and two thruppences from 1943. Whilst I don’t know the origins of this brooch, other than it came from a car boot sale in the late 1980s, I do know that a silver sixpence represents luck and prosperity in marriage. It was not uncommon for a bride during the Great Depression or the Second World War, when jewellery was a scarce luxury, to wear a lucky silver sixpence brooch made from coins of the day. I could imagine a war bride wearing this brooch and wishing for good luck, perhaps not only in her marriage, but in life as she and her new husband navigated the perils of a world at war. The second piece is an eighteen-carat yellow gold Victorian mourning brooch. Delicate and ornate, it has a central cartouche featuring a single small diamond. Besides its pleasing aesthetic, what is interesting about this brooch is that the central cartouche may be lifted and removed, revealing a small compartment where a small lock of a loved one’s hair may be kept: a secret known only to the wearer.
The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" on the 24th of November is "gold and silver (colour)", and what better way to create an image for the this theme than with two pieces of jewellery: a gold Victorian mourning brooch and a lucky silver sixpence brooch. I hope you like my choice for the theme and that it makes you smile!
Glenisla Golf Club, Alyth, Perthshire. (1995 - 2016)
The club and course opened in 1995.
The eighteen-hole course was designed by Tony Wardle, a golf architect who had worked alongside Robert Trent Jones and Jack Nicklaus.
Developed originally by the Glenshee Chairlift Company as a summer business to make use of its full-time ski employees during the off-season, it was bought out of receivership by the Somerville family in 2004.
The Glenisla Golf Club closed on October 31st 2016. The club had a membership of 150 at the time of closure. It was planned to use the course for a housing development.
It was reported that there’s a chance that a new nine-hole course may be developed on the site at some point in the future but, if that happens, it would be years from now.
Alyth Golf Club bought the back nine of Glenisla about 2018 as a nine hole course.

I'm out at work at the moment so can't look up the term for an 18 point stag.
Photographed at Studley Royal two days ago. I cant help thinking that in this mornings snow these Red Deer would have made for a very different photo.
It's great fun to look back in time and try to figure out what happened on a specific date. In this case, I'm also interested in a specific time--6:18 AM. So, I checked it out with a quick internet search. I learned that on 04-August-2014:
-Princeton Review released its eagerly awaited annual ranking of top party schools.
-Toledo tap water was deemed safe to drink.
-There was a major earthquake in China
-Tropical storm Iselle drenched Hawaii
-Hamas and Israel agreed to a 72 hour ceasefire
-James Brady, U.S. Press Secretary wounded during the Reagan assassination attempt, died
-The City Council of Walcott Iowa met at the city hall
All-in-all a rather quiet day in history. I never did find out what happened specifically at 6:18 AM, other than I was alone on the Monterey Fisherman's Wharf shooting this picture on a very foggy morning. Maybe it will make history.
Happy Slider's Sunday everyone.

“If strong regret of recent events was terminal, I’d be dying right now; like, you dont even know.”
I thought the day before was hard. No.
When it's to the point that you're breaking down while you're washing the dishes? Surrounded by your family? That's bad.
I stayed in and failed at distracting myself.
I didn't smile until I went and hung out with the gang, I don't know what I would have done if Sonja hadn't been there. We then decided to go see The Green Lantern, which was a lot better than I thought it was going to be. Probably because Ryan Reynolds is beautiful, and I was pretty much in love with his character. Sigh.
He sat behind me at the movie, and threw popcorn the whole time, and proceeded to text Sonja the quote at the top of the photo; she then showed it to me. The movie had too many paralleles between our own situation, and it made me really think and wonder if it was doing the same to you. So that was hard. But weirdly, just seeing you, it just makes it all better. I didn't think it would, I thought it would make it worse. But no. You're both the cause and the cure, and that's a scary thought.

Chichen Itza: Mayan ruins in Yucatan Mexico more... are the most visited Mayan ruins on the peninsula. Eighteen structures have been restored over the years. Pyramid Kukulcan is the tallest of them and allows a view from the top of all Chichen Itza. During the Spring and Fall equinoxes, (March 21 & Sept 21) the setting sun creates shadows down the steps of the pyramid that resemble a snake descending. This is a popular event to see and usually draws big crowds.
