A heat wave has hit California and boom, the dragonflies are out in force! This fellow landed in a nice spot and allowed me 3 shots. Siskiyou County, California
It was still quite early this morning and poor light, when this buck showed up on our front lawn. We have had as many as a dozen deer these mornings and none that still had their antlers, so it was a surprise to see one that did.
I grabbed the camera and ran to the front window and got this shot as he trotted through. The settings were way off and I had to lighten and sharpen the picture, but since I haven't posted any shots for 2023.... ta da!
Note: You can't see the two antler spikes that are coming up *between the set of antlers. They were about three inches high. Two more tiny ones were starting at the base of each and you can just see one in Large view.
* I actually meant that the little spikes were part of each antler but were down close to the bottom and hard to see from a side angle. They weren't the start of this years antlers.

I went over the the Mississippi River yesterday hoping to get some eagle action but was very disappointed. I did get a few shots of eagles in flight and several other waterfowl shots anyway. Here an eagle shows us what 8 ft looks like. Well, minus a few inches at the top. Female eagle wingspans get up to 8 ft ( 2.4 meters ) . This one should be close to that.
Built for the Cotton Belt in 1988 as SSW 8049, former Union Pacific B40-8 1848 is perhaps one of the "newest" locomotives preserved in a museum.
Donated to the IRM by the UP, the 1848 was doing its thing on the IRM's main line in 2014. Hopefully someday the Dash Eight will once again wear the scarlet and grey instead of what it wears now.

Sand coats the underside of the locomotives as Norfolk Southern train 212 climbs the grade out of Shippensburg, cresting here near Lees Cross Roads. The hotshot is running late and most likely won't stop until it's near the destination of Croxton, NJ.
Leading the train is one of the roughly 100 D9-40C's in the fleet; they are being upgraded from 4000 to 4400HP. Over a dozen have already been completely rebuilt to AC44C6M's. If that program continues to do well, it's not far fetched to think these standard cabs will be endangered species in a couple years.
