Many thanks to all who visit, view and comment upon, my efforts

In an effort to eat healthily I have a fruit and muesli breakfast each morning. And I don’t eat between around 8pm in the evening and 10am the following morning. Apparently the body needs a rest from digesting food.

My bowl contains:

Summer berries

Kiwi fruit

Apple

Blueberries

Grapes

60g of fruit yoghurt (blueberry/cherry/strawberry usually; one though, not all!)

25g of high quality muesli (with no added sugar)

half a small banana

All mixed up together and it keeps me going until around 1.30/2pm when I have soup for lunch. (Home made, not tinned or packet).

Great photography requires dedication, time and effort.

But above all there are costs involved as well.

Equipment, props and model fees, not to mention time,

are all "out-of-pocket" expenses for the artist.

If you enjoy my photography, you might like to help to support my art.

I offer over 2 hours of great videos, including many

behind-the-scenes of some of my best photo sessions,

all artistically crafted for your enjoyment.

The walk up to Segestad started early in the morning, with the mist still clinging to the trees and the faint sound of birds beginning to stir in the forest. The path was steep, winding through ancient pine trees and over rocky outcrops, each turn offering a tantalizing glimpse of what lay ahead. The air was crisp and fresh, carrying the unmistakable scent of pine and earth, a reminder of the untamed beauty of Norway’s landscapes.

As I climbed higher, the trees began to thin, revealing patches of the sky above, a brilliant blue canvas untouched by even the wispiest of clouds. The path grew steeper, demanding more effort with each step, but the anticipation of what awaited at the top made every bit of exertion worthwhile.

Finally, after what felt like hours of climbing, the trail leveled out, and the last of the trees gave way to an open plateau. There it was—Segestad, a quaint, secluded farm perched high above Oppstrynsvatnet, overlooking a view that words could scarcely capture.

I stood in awe as the vast panorama unfolded before me. Below, the fjord-like waters of Oppstrynsvatnet shimmered in the sunlight, a deep, inviting blue that contrasted beautifully with the lush green meadows that framed it. The farm itself was charming, with rustic buildings that seemed to have stood there forever, perfectly at home in this remote and tranquil setting.

But it was the mountains that truly took my breath away. Majestic and snow-capped, they rose in the distance like silent guardians, their peaks glistening under the bright sunlight. The contrast between the white of the snow, the deep blue of the sky, and the verdant greens of the valleys below was nothing short of spectacular.

Standing there, it felt as though time had stopped. The world was reduced to this moment, this view, and the profound sense of peace that accompanied it. The journey had been challenging, but the reward was beyond anything I could have imagined. As I took in the beauty of Segestad and the world around it, I couldn’t help but feel a deep connection to this place, a part of Norway that seemed to hold within it the essence of all that is wild and beautiful in nature.

It was a moment I knew I would carry with me forever, a reminder of the simple, breathtaking beauty that can be found when you take the time to climb a little higher.

I put a lot of effort into getting this shot, but maybe I should have put in more. While I like how it came out, I probably should have retaken it without the lens hood and worked a little more on the shadows. Next time :-)

This is a Pacific Thorny Oyster shell, which we bought many years ago. For the 2020 Weekly Alphabet Challenge and my POTD.

Well-known for their highly publicized efforts to reduce coal smoke emissions in downtown Durango, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad decided to "go green" in a different way back in 2010 with one of their locomotives and a string of coaches. For their 2010 "Railfest" event, one RPO car (a concession car in disguise) and three coaches were painted "Pullman Green" to resemble a classic Denver & Rio Grande Western passenger consist. Even their lone operable K-28 #473 had her boiler jacket painted green. That unique trainset is seen here, rumbling across the Animas Timber Bridge (MP 495.25) south of Silverton under a threatening sky. All four of the cars pictured are expected to remain green for several more months. These cars were used for the 2010 Fall Photo Specials, as well as a couple of private charters that were planned later in the year and in early 2011.

This is the point where the overhead railway bridge entered underground beneath where I am standing

In Taiwan, efforts to protect the Black-faced Spoonbill have led to the establishment of a conservation area in Qigu, Tainan, which has been incorporated into a national park. In 1988, due to habitat destruction and climate change, the global population of Black-faced Spoonbills had dropped to just 288 individuals. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of BirdLife International, researchers, bird photographers, and bird enthusiasts worldwide, their population has significantly increased to 6,988 as of 2024.

In an effort to try something a little different, I shot this photo of Q210 passing the Saluda River rapids and heading north on the historic CN&L line as the sun rises over Columbia, SC.

No one knows the suffering we old folks went through during our school days. To write papers for English class we didn’t have cell phones, computers or Google to help our plagiarizing efforts.

We normally had to trudge to the library and either the old fashioned wooden computer known back then as a card catalog file that consisted of a large wooden structure with many drawers. The drawers were aligned alphabetically and filled with tons of index cards with a rod running through the top to keep them in order and to discourage lazy teenage boys from absconding with them rather than copying down the information.

Each card had a subject title and listed where publications on that subject might be found in the library. Once you wrote that info down on a slip of paper you would stroll through the library hoping your knowledge of the Dewey Decimal system was good enough to locate the book or magazine you needed.

If your family was well-enough off, you might have a set of encyclopedias at home, a result of a smooth-talking salesman who convinced your parents this would give you an edge on your classmates and help prepare you for life.

The top (and most expensive) encyclopedia back then was the Britannica brand. It was more detailed and scientific and I always suspected it was the choice of my classmates who went on to become doctors or lawyers rather than the rest of us who had no clue about a life career in high school.

The Britannica now easily accessible (and free!) online says this about God’s design for a lot of the wildlife kingdom that has helped preserve them from predators through the ages. The encyclopedia does not use the term God or Intelligent Design as that would not be politically correct but many of us know who to credit:

“Sexual Dimorphism, the differences in appearance between males and females of the same species, such as in color, shape, size, and structure, that are caused by the inheritance of one or the other sexual pattern in the genetic material.”

This female red-winged blackbird is a good example of this design as its coloring allows her to be much more hidden from predators when she nests and then helps bring up her young.

Help Chile Overcome the Earthquake Chile stepped up efforts to find survivors of an earthquake registering 8.8 magnitude that struck before dawn yesterday, killing more than 700 people, severing the country’s main highway and damaging 1.5 million homes.

The eartquake was centered 200 miles (317 kilometers) southwest of Santiago near the main winemaking region and close to Concepcion, a metropolitan region of more than 500,000 people. Highways and airports were shut by damage and some copper mines closed. The total economic damage may be as much as $30 billion, or about 15 percent of the South American country’s gross domestic product, according to estimates by disaster- scenario modeler Eqecat Inc.

We need your help to overcome the earthquake.

Hardly worth the effort of scanning this very poor image from the dusty draw, but hopefully it will tease a pin sharp masterpiece from Mr Whiteley's collection, probably of an 8F in full sun at this classic position.

Mainly posted to record the changes since 1968; so of note is the sad demise of the splendid curved row of cottages and also a few floors of the mill. On the good side the first arch of the viaduct still hasn’t collapsed.

For the record 73069 and 73050 head over Lydgate viaduct with the second SVRS/MRTS special on 27th April 1968.

I put a ton of effort into this, and I am happy with it. I can honestly say this is my new personal favorite out of all my creations.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated, always looking to better my PMG skills.

Can I get some favorites on this beast for the PMG underdog that's never had more than TEN faves!?

Cheers to the best online community out there(;

Much effort and not a modest amount of expenditure was outlaid on an ambitious bid to bring the 1996 Olympic Games to Manchester, which ultimately came to nought. GM Buses NCME-bodied Olympian 3223 carried a promotional livery for the initiative and was photographed on West Street, Oldham in June 1990. However, 12 years later and the City would host the Commonwealth Games which brought much in the way of additional transport interest, as would the City's involvement in the 2012 London Olympics.

I just really like how spring comes through with new life and vibrant colors after weeks and weeks of bleakness, cold and gray.

It happens every year, however it never ceases to amaze me...

I am extremely happy to be part of a wildlife rescue team here in Wisconsin! Our team went out on a very cold and windy day in an effort to rescue two American white pelicans. This one here had lost its right wing to predation and therefore wasn't able to migrate South with his friends. Nature is harsh. Beautiful, yes, but often so harsh.

For some people, a cardboard box is their home.

I am thankful to have a roof over my head. Other people sadly aren't as fortunate.

It's easy to take things for granted in our lives, but not everyone is so lucky and today as a group we are trying to raise awareness about the Charity Shelter and the great work they do.

With such a cold winter this year its important to remember those not as fortunate as ourselves, who don't have a nice warm home. Shelter do such a fantastic job in helping those with housing difficulties we think its important to recognise their efforts.

Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoover_Dam

Hoover Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona. Constructed between 1931 and 1936, during the Great Depression, it was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over 100 lives. In bills passed by Congress during its construction, it was referred to as the Hoover Dam, after President Herbert Hoover, but was named Boulder Dam by the Roosevelt administration. In 1947, the name Hoover Dam was restored by Congress.

Since about 1900, the Black Canyon and nearby Boulder Canyon had been investigated for their potential to support a dam that would control floods, provide irrigation water, and produce hydroelectric power. In 1928, Congress authorized the project. The winning bid to build the dam was submitted by a consortium named Six Companies, Inc., which began construction in early 1931. Such a large concrete structure had never been built before, and some of the techniques used were unproven. The torrid summer weather and lack of facilities near the site also presented difficulties. Nevertheless, Six Companies turned the dam over to the federal government on March 1, 1936, more than two years ahead of schedule.

Hoover Dam impounds Lake Mead and is located near Boulder City, Nevada, a municipality originally constructed for workers on the construction project, about 30 mi (48 km) southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. The dam's generators provide power for public and private utilities in Nevada, Arizona, and California. Hoover Dam is a major tourist attraction, with 7 million tourists a year. The heavily traveled U.S. Route 93 (US 93) ran along the dam's crest until October 2010, when the Hoover Dam Bypass opened.

Source: hoover.archives.gov/hoovers/hoover-dam

85 years after its completion, Hoover dam is still considered an engineering marvel. It is named in honor of President Herbert Hoover, who played a crucial role in its creation.

For many years, residents of the American southwest sought to tame the unpredictable Colorado River. Disastrous floods during the early 1900’s led residents of the area to look to the federal government for aid, and experiments with irrigation on a limited scale had shown that this arid region could be transformed into fertile cropland, if only the river could be controlled. The greatest obstacle to the construction of such a dam was the allocation of water rights among the seven states comprising the Colorado River drainage basin. Meetings were held in 1918, 1919 and 1920, but the states could not reach a consensus.

Herbert Hoover had visited the Lower Colorado region in the years before World War I and was familiar with its problems and the potential for development. Upon becoming Secretary of Commerce in 1921, Hoover proposed the construction of a dam on the Colorado River. In addition to flood control and irrigation, it would provide a dependable supply of water for Los Angeles and Southern California. The project would be self-supporting, recovering its cost through the sale of hydroelectric power generated by the dam.

In 1921, the state legislatures of the Colorado River basin authorized commissioners to negotiate an interstate agreement. Congress authorized President Harding to appoint a representative for the federal government to serve as chair of the Colorado River Commission and on December 17, 1921, Harding appointed Hoover to that role.

When the commission assembled in Santa Fe in November 1922, the seven states still disagreed over the fair distribution of water. The upstream states feared that the downstream states, with their rapidly developing agricultural and power demands, would quickly preempt rights to the water by the “first in time, first in right” doctrine. Hoover suggested a compromise that the water be divided between the upper and lower basins without individual state quotas. The resulting Colorado River Compact was signed on November 24, 1922. It split the river basin into upper and lower halves with the states within each region deciding amongst themselves how the water would be allocated.

A series of bills calling for Federal funding to build the dam were introduced by Congressman Phil D. Swing and Senator Hiram W. Johnson between 1922 and 1928, all of which were rejected. The last Swing-Johnson bill, titled the Boulder Canyon Project Act, was largely written by Hoover and Secretary of the Interior Hubert Work. Congress finally agreed, and the bill was signed into law on December 21, 1928 by President Coolidge. The dream was about to become reality.

On June 25, 1929, less than four months after his inauguration, President Herbert Hoover signed a proclamation declaring the Colorado River Compact effective at last. Appropriations were approved and construction began in 1930. The dam was dedicated in 1935 and the hydroelectric generators went online in 1937. In 1947, Congress officially "restored" Hoover's name to the dam, after FDR's Secretary of the Interior tried to remove it. Hoover Dam was built for a cost of $49 million (approximately $1 billion adjusted for inflation). The power plant and generators cost an additional $71 million, more than the cost of the dam itself. The sale of electrical power generated by the dam paid back its construction cost, with interest, by 1987.

Today the Hoover Dam controls the flooding of the Colorado River, irrigates more than 1.5 million acres of land, and provides water to more than 16 million people. Lake Mead supports recreational activities and provides habitats to fish and wildlife. Power generated by the dam provides energy to power over 500,000 homes. The Hoover Compromise still governs how the water is shared.

Local fundraising efforts were pushed and enough funds were in the bank in the city of Lake Worth Beach to begin construction of the new library in 1940. Architect Edgar S. Wortman received the commission for the library building. His design was a Mediterranean-style building that would complement other buildings in the downtown Lake Worth area. Just as construction began, two longtime winter residents, twin brothers James D. Strait and William S. Strait, made a $10,000 donation to the library board for the erection of a museum. A museum wing was added to the library plans, and the Strait Museum added to the cultural offerings of the town.

Ground was broken on October 7, 1940; by February, 1941, the building was substantially complete. Although funds were not available for air-conditioning the building was constructed to allow for its eventual installation with ducts and a small room for the plant. The dedication took place on August 12, 1941.

The Lake Worth Art League took up residence in the Strait Museum, and patrons enjoyed may years of art instruction and exhibitions. The design of the building, with its high ceilings and open spaces, also made it a wonderful venue for paintings and other forms of art, including the R.Sherman Winton collection of paintings, and many other paintings depicting historic and colorful subjects.

During the 1950's the Lake Worth Library had the highest number of patrons and circulation among all Palm Beach County libraries by a wide margin, and seasonal patrons especially enjoyed its spacious rooms and customer service.

By the early 1960s, sufficient funds were collected to install a heating and air-conditioning plant. This would keep patrons more comfortable, especially in the hot Florida summers, but more importantly allowed the book collection to be kept under better conditions for preservation.

As the decades passed, the library kept up with the needs of patrons. LP vinyl records were replace by cassettes and CDs; books on tape became books on CD. Lake Worth installed one of the first library security systems to reduce theft of library materials, and in 1982 the library became handicapped accessible. In the 1990s, computers for patron use were introduced, and soon the Internet became a service the library offered its patrons.

As the City of Lake Worth celebrated it centennial in 2013, the library played a central role in the festivities. A groundbreaking look into the city's hidden history revealed the town's original inhabitants, Samuel and Fannie James, and resulted in the publication of Pioneers of Jewell. All proceeds from the book benefited the library.

The evolution continues into the twenty-first century. Most recently the library opened its "CreatE-Lab" were children and teens can study and explore technology to support their studies and interests.

Over its more than one hundreds years, the Lake Worth Public Library has served thousands of patrons, from locals to winter residents. The library building is the focal point of downtown Lake Worth, as it has been for more than seven decades, and it will continue to serve its patrons with information and services for education, entertainment, and enjoyment that only a good book, or new knowledge, can bring.

In an effort to keep the old cars together across the rolling profile of the old Soo, WC placed power (and an engineer) on both ends for the trip to Escanaba. A boxy F45 pushes past the old crossing of the Nicollet Badger & Northern, once a C&NW route that continued north to Iron River, MI. February 5, 2000.

Many thanks to all who visit, view and comment upon, my efforts
