Horse anemones (strawberry) (Actinia equina)

Horse anemones, Strawberry anemones (Actinia equina) are ideal candidates for keeping in a reef aquarium. Up to 7 cm in diameter.

Distributed in the East Atlantic, common in the Mediterranean and Black seas from the inland seas.

Occurs singly or in groups in the intertidal zone in rocky areas with strong wave movement of water. Usually it keeps on vertical walls, at a depth of up to 2 m. These anemones are very brightly colored, often in scarlet or brick-red colors. Brownish, green, or pink specimens are also found. There are two forms, a larger, brighter one with 192 tentacles and a smaller one, about 3 cm in diameter, usually brownish, with 124 tentacles. Horse anemones are active mainly at night.

Horse anemones are insensitive to temperature and fluctuations in water salinity. They calmly tolerate being in the air for a short period. In an aquarium, they usually stay close to the surface. An aquarium of 50 liters or more is suitable for keeping these anemones. Low or medium lighting. If the light is too bright, the anemones will move to shady areas that need to be created in the aquarium. Good filtration and very intense, preferably wave-like, water circulation is required. It is better to place anemones in the area with the strongest current, where they will feel most comfortable. The optimum water temperature is 15 - 20 degrees.

Horse anemones are great aquarium adaptations and are suitable even for the novice marine aquarist.

Anemones in an aquarium need regular feeding. It is better to give food more often (at least twice a week), in small portions. The basis of the diet is finely chopped shrimp, shellfish or fish. You can give frozen food.
