I finally managed to figure out a way to select the main part of the photo and 'cut it out', which is great. After I did so I touched up the picture with the paintbrush. I know the editing hasn't been done well, which is because I did it very quickly, but I'm pleased it worked this time. I didn't want to spend my editing life deleting the background with the paintbrush tool! Thanks to AK_Brickster and Crazy crownie guy for the help over at Classic-Castle :)

If you were wondering, the figure is the leader of my Lenfald/Kingdoms Dragons army. I just grabbed a random figure to photograph!

So, having done a #365days photo project over the past year on Facebook and Instagram, I am switching things up a little for 2016, and trying to focus on portraits in a way I've not done before.

Up to now I've frequently said 'I don't really do people pictures', and that's generally been true. Apart from occasional family get-togethers I rarely take portraits. That's partially because my emerging style of photography is quite slow and thoughtful, and generally I find buildings and landscapes tend not to get bored waiting for me to get the image I'm trying for!

I've been thinking though that there are a lot of people in the various parts of my life who I'd quite like to document in photographs, and also get back on the learning curve with the trials and tribulations of how to make pleasing portraits with minimal fuss and equipment.

I know that using natural light without modifiers (the only way I've taken people pics so far) is very challenging, and maybe I'll pick up some new gear along the way, but here's to another voyage of discovery ...

This simple portrait of myself editing a shot in Lightroom was far from simple to achieve on my own! Fortunately my 6D can be controlled through wifi with an EOS Remote app, which makes the focussing possible. But getting the framing right took forever, as well as gradually rearranging the various bits of stuff on my desk so they weren't cluttering the image.

But I thought this leant itself to a portrait of me, as I do spend a lot of my photography time sat in front of Lightroom agonising over which shots are good, and how to process them to their best advantage.

A re-edit of a photo that I took over 15 years ago with my Canon PowerShot S60 in the first month that I owned it. The S60 launched me on a decade and a half career as a photographer. Revisiting the image, I de-noised it using a Topaz plugin in Photoshop, made adjustments (including a very fake sky) and applied a lookup table in Luminar 4.
