"Q" and "I" are survivals from the 19th century when the terms "Quantity" and "Intensity" were in general use, approximating to Current and Voltage.

 

The detector is provided with two coil windings with resistances of 0.2 ohms ("Quantity") and 100 ohms ("Intensity").

 

Used for making qualitative assessments of circuit characteristics and battery condition.

Edison caustic soda batteries, just founds these today, from what I can tell they were use primarily for telegraph. This is a old bank in new england that we're doing some work in. Was originally a police station I believe.
