This is the tag from one of Jet's plush Hanukkah toys. It is quite edifying: a shiksa is indeed a non-Jewish woman, and indeed, like everything else, this toy was made in China.

On March 27th, 2011, it snowed in Topeka. On March 28th I took pictures. Not the most edifying morning, but I liked the snow coated truck.

At one point, the Romans would only allow the theaters to be build in wood so that the wealthy patrons wouldn't create a self edifying establishment. However, a loop hole was found. Temples had to be made in stone. So by placing statues of at least one God in the theater, cities/patrons were able to build the theaters in stone.

“The charm, one might say the genius of memory, is that it is choosy, chancy, and temperamental: it rejects the edifying cathedral and indelibly photographs the small boy outside, chewing a hunk of melon in the dust”

Elizabeth Bowen

Today's museums seek to explain, to edify with the abosluteness of our knowledge, or bolster our belief in science through the explication of theory. It is not to collect or inspire, as has been the case in previous centuries. No, we enter into a hall of decisive knowledge, a place of diagrams and demonstrations. In no aspect is this more apparent than in the banishment of shadows. Everything is in full view, categorized joylessly and precisely.

It is in such a crisis of illumination that I seek to draw the curtains in order to preserve our wonder.

Saint-Émilion / Located in what is considered the capital of the Bordeaux wine-growing region, Saint Emilion has been preserved from the ravages of time and tourism. In the 8th Century, a monk named Emilion set up a hermitage here, and as the centuries went on, chapels, houses and fortifications were added. The result is certainly one of the most picturesque towns in France. Of most interest will be the Monolithic Church (Eglise Monolithe), that sits in the center of the town. It was dug out of the surrounding rock over a period stretching from the 9th to the 13th Centuries and is the largest underground church in Europe. The portal has 14th Century sculpted images depicting the Last Judgment and the Resurrection. The monolithic church is an underground church dug out in the early 12th century of gigantic proportions (38 metres long and 12 meters high). At the heart of the city, the monolithic church reminds the religious activity of the city in the Middle Ages and intrigues by its unusual design. If it shows itself in the eyes of the visitor by the position of a 68-meter-high bell tower, then it hides itself behind the elegance of three openings on the front and a Gothic portal often closed. Is that the church is as well surprising as fragile! From the ancient Greek « mono » meant « single » and « lithos », « stone », its name refers to a building dug into the limestone plateau and whose current structure still forms a single block. The goal of its realization is probably the development of the city around a pilgrim activity on the tomb of the patron saint St. Emilion. In memory of the Breton hermit who had settled in a nearby cave during the 8th century, and in order to edify the faithful, the ambition to achieve a sufficiently large reliquary church to host hundreds of pilgrims, was born. Carved in the 12th century, painted in the 14th, devastated in the 16th, battered in the 18th during the Revolution and restored in the 20th ! Today, it is still consecrated and hosts regular religious ceremonies, sometimes concerts, but also induction ceremonies of the Brotherhood of wines of Saint-Emilion - The Jurade. Mainly it is an unavoidable place to visit for an unforgettable, daily guided tour.
