A U.S. Soldier from 3-21 Infantry Battalion conducts force protection operations at Fort Greely, Alaska, March 12, 2018, as part of the U.S. Army Alaska-led Joint Force Land Component Command in support of Alaskan Command's exercise Arctic Edge 18 conducted under the authority of U.S. Northern Command. Arctic Edge 2018 is a biennial, large-scale, joint-training exercise that prepares and tests the U.S. military's ability to operate tactically in the extreme cold-weather conditions found in Arctic environments. Millstone Edge quarry was one of the main sources of Peak District millstones which were made to be used in many industries such as grinding corn, pulping timber for paper manufacture, in paint mills to grind minerals, grindstones for cutlery, pulping apples for cider making, grinding cork for linoleum and grinding mustard seeds.
Dozens of holes can be seen drilled into the rock face, some in groups with dark red paint. Explosive charges were rammed into these holes to quarry the edge. These are the last phases of quarry working that began over 400 years ago.
Quarrying ended at Millstone Edge soon after the last stones were sold to a Swedish paper mill in 1939.
Unsold flat millstones stones from this period can still be seen by the footpath.
A millstone shaped from Millstone Grit quarried in the area has been adopted as the emblem of the Peak District National Park.
As an image, the millstone is visible on literature but use is made of the objects themselves at many of the entrances to the National Park..

On Saturday 7 October 2017, UCL Urban Laboratory and Folkestone Triennial 2017 held the second event in the EDGE symposium series, exploring the concept of situated practice in contemporary art, architecture and urbanism. The events bring together practitioners and thinkers at three ‘edge’ locations connected by the High Speed 1 railway, which acts a geographical link and embodies ideas associated with community, connectivity and escapism.
In framing these events, we have considered 'edge' as: 'Where an area that is known or privileged meets another that is unknown or ignored; a point of balance between contrary or diverse phenomena; a place of connectivity and interaction.'
'Periphery' was a day of enquiry to consider the environs of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Investment for the 2012 Games brought rapid development to the previously neglected Stratford area. Here East, within the former press and broadcasting centre of the Games, is envisaged as a cluster of innovators and digital makers, whilst the Stratford Waterside development will bring new institutions including the V&A, Sadler's Wells, London College of Fashion, and UCL.
Keynote: Jill Magid and Do Ho Suh
Speakers: Amica Dall (Assemble), Anna Harding (SPACE), Jane Rendell, Kreider + O’Leary, Liza Fior (MUF), Oreet Ashery and Mi Park, Torange Khonsari (Public Works), and Stephen Pritchard
The series is organised by the UCL Urban Laboratory and Folkestone Triennial 2017, with additional support from the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL and The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL.

A walk from Cutthroat Bridge to Stanage Edge
Stanage is the largest and most impressive of the gritstone edges. Situated on the moors north of Hathersage, and visible from miles away down in the Hope Valley, it stretches for a length of approximately 4miles from its northern tip at Stanage End to the southern point close to the Cowper Stone (near Burbage Rocks).
It is a famous location for rock-climbing and a popular spot for walkers.
Stanage's situation is high and it can be snowbound in winter.
For most of its length it lies between the 1,300 and 1,500 ft contours. The rock face itself attains a maximum height of 85 ft, but for most of its length it is between 50 and 60 ft high.
The high point of the main edge is at High Neb (1,502 ft), which lies near the north end.
