The glacier that runs from Jungfraujoch is the Aletsch Glacier (Grosser Aletschgletscher).

It is the longest glacier in the Alps, stretching about 23 kilometers (14 miles) from Jungfraujoch down into the Aletsch region of the Valais. The glacier is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site and plays a crucial role in the region’s ecosystem.

The Aletsch Glacier is fed by smaller glaciers, including the Ewigschneefäld, and is flanked by peaks such as the Jungfrau (4,158 m), Mönch (4,107 m), and Eiger (3,970 m). However, like many glaciers worldwide, it is retreating due to climate change.

The Aletsch Glacier (Grosser Aletschgletscher) begins at Jungfraujoch.

At Jungfraujoch (3,454 m), the glacier originates from the Ewigschneefäld (Eternal Snow Field), a large snow-covered plateau between the Jungfrau, Mönch, and Trugberg mountains. From there, the Aletsch Glacier flows down into the Aletsch Arena in the Valais.

It is the longest and largest glacier in the Alps, extending about 23 km (14 mi) and covering approximately 79 square kilometers. It plays a significant role in the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a major attraction for visitors exploring the region.

The best viewpoints are from the Eggishorn, Bettmerhorn, and Moosfluh.

The best viewing points from near Fiesch are at Eggishorn (2,927 m) – which offers the most complete panoramic view of the entire Aletsch Glacier from its source at Jungfraujoch down to the Massa Gorge.

You can get there by taking the Fiesch–Eggishorn cable car via Fiescheralp.

Bettmerhorn (2,647 m) is another fantastic viewpoint, slightly lower but still offering a sweeping view of the glacier.

You can get there via a cable car from Bettmeralp.

Moosfluh (2,333 m) is a lower viewpoint but still a great place to see the Aletsch Glacier.

You can get to Moosfluh by cable car from Riederalp.

Summary of Viewing Locations:

At Jungfraujoch, as this photo shows, you stand on the glacier itself, but the view is more about being on the ice rather than seeing the full length of the glacier.

Belalp is another great viewing point, but its further away from Fiesch. If you want the classic postcard view of the Aletsch Glacier, Eggishorn is the best option!

The Rock Islands of Palau are a collection of several hundred limestone and coral uprises in the Palauan archipelago. They are extremely important to Palau as they support biodiversity, fisheries, tourism, and cultural values. The islands are also famous for their beaches, blue/turquoise lagoons, and have made UNESCO heritage status. There are over 746 species of fish, over 385 corals, 13 species of shark and manta rays, 7 species of giant clams, and all the endemic birds and over half of the endemic plants of Palau.

This fern was growing in the moss on the giant beech I posted last week. It's amazing how these big trees can be a harbour for so many plants, animals and insects!

usually aquatic though some species have tadpoles which are terrestrial or semi terrestrial.

Teeny tiny mushrooms on the end of a decaying log covered in moss...even a tiny little slug making its way; hallmarks of the West Coast environment.

What Drew me to this shot was how such a small body of water existed so close and yet so far from the endless ocean. Reminds me of evolution, where the few life forms in the pond eventually become a different species than those in the ocean. Maybe some little fish will grow legs and upload their own pictures in Flickr some day.

The North and South Downs Chalk ecosystem,

either side of The Weald, is a sublime and beautiful environment.

The Weald is a series of Sandstone Ridges and Clay Vales.

Over millions of years river, Spring and Periglacial meltwater

has worn away the top layer of a Chalk Dome,

reaching, perhaps, an altitude of 4,000 feet.

Under that, Upper and Lower Greensand has been eroded,

revealing in places, layers of Gault and Atherfield Clays,

particularly in the base of valleys.

The name “Weald” comes from the Saxon word, “Walden,”

meaning “forest” or “woodland.”

When the Romans invaded 2,000 years ago

and right through the Anglo-Saxon “Dark Ages,”

the area between the Downs was densely wooded.

Today, as much as 30% of “The Weald”

is still forest and woodland copse.

It is very different to the Chalk Downs,

having Acidic rather than Alkaline soil.

The Chalk acts like an Aquifer, permeating some water,

but retaining enough, to allow lush grass turf to thrive.

However, the easily eroded Sandstone retains little.

Water leaches through the sandy

soil, taking most nutrients with it.

Therefore, on the Sandstone ridges only hardy

Pines, Heather, Ferns and Bramble can survive the poor soil.

Where erosion has worn through the Sandstone

underlying clay retains water and much more nutrients,

making grass, fodder and arable crops

possible, in strips, along the valleys.

The mixed forest pictured here,

is dappled by an afternoon sun beyond south-west.

This colourful, peaceful habitat is one that I have

grown up with and loved for many years.

Satkosia is the meeting point of two major bio-geographic regions of India; the Deccan Peninsula and the Eastern Ghats, contributing immense biodiversity. Satkosia spreads along the magnificent gorge over the mighty river Mahanadi in Orissa state of India. The name Satkosia originates from two words; sat meaning seven and kosk meaning two miles, indicating the length of the gorge as 14 miles or 22 km.

Established in 1976 as a wildlife sanctuary, Satkosia is a paradise of immense scenic charm. The reserve has an area of 964 sq km with 524 sq km as core area. The area is also a part of the Mahanadi elephant reserve. It is one of the best ecosystems in the country, representing a diverse floral and faunal extravaganza.

The area was declared as Satkosia Tiger Reserve in 2007, comprising two adjoining wildlife sanctuaries; the Satkosia Gorge sanctuary and Baisipalli sanctuary. The reserve is spread over 4 districts; Angul, Cuttack, Nayagarh and Boudh. More: www.satkosia.org/

The pinyon pine and juniper ecosystem of the interior is adapted to regular wildfires, so this is a common sight.

I was thinking about National Parks shut down. How living in big cities affects us. And who should protect what in this country...

The San Pedro riparian area, containing about 40 miles of the upper San Pedro River, was designated by Congress as a National Conservation Area on November 18, 1988. The primary purpose for the designation is to protect and enhance the desert riparian ecosystem, a rare remnant of what was once an extensive network of similar riparian systems throughout the Southwest.

Many recreational opportunities are available within the NCA. Murray Springs Clovis Site, a significant archaeological site contains an undisturbed stratigraphic record of the past 40,000 years. Excavations were conducted by the University of Arizona from 1966 to 1971. People first arrived in this area 11,000 years ago. They belonged to what we now call the Clovis Culture and were the earliest known people to have inhabited North America. Named after the distinctive and beautifully crafted Clovis spear points they made, they were expert hunters of the large mammals of the last Ice Age. An interpretive trail leads visitors through the site. From Sierra Vista, take State Highway 90 east 6 miles to Monson Road. Turn left, and go about 1.2 miles to the signed turnoff to Murray Springs. The access road is located on the right.

The Spanish Presidio Santa Cruz de Terrenate is the most intact remaining example of a once-extensive network of similar presidios. These fortresses marked the northern extension of New Spain into the New World. Only a stone foundation and a few remaining adobe wall remnants mark the location of an isolated and dangerous military station. From Fairbank on Highway 82, drive approximately 2 miles west on Highway 82, turn right on the Kellar Ranch Road and travel approximately 3 miles to the trailhead. Hike about 2 miles to the ruins and interpretive displays.

The San Pedro House, located 9 miles east of Sierra Vista on State Highway 90, is a popular trailhead for birdwatchers, hikers, and mountain bikers. The Friends of San Pedro operate a bookstore and information center.

Bee Butts — Well, we may not "Break the Internet" with this one, but we like bee butts and we cannot lie!

This is the backend of a Lipotriches (Plain Sweat Bee) collected in Australia. This is one of the bees in which the males are known to form sleeping aggregations – small groups to dozens of individuals clustering together on the same twig late in the afternoon and remaining there until after dawn. There may be quite a lot of “jockeying for position” as males alight too close to another individual with low key aggressive interactions. Some clusters might contain more than one species. There has been little research on the reason for this aggregating behavior, although safety in numbers might play a role.

You can find more bees, all for public domain use, from our Bee Inventory and Monitoring Lab at flickr.com/photos/usgsbiml.

Ecosystem services - I recently contributed illustration for the DEFRA Natural Environment White Paper, which is launched today. DEFRA - The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is a government department in the UK. You can download the Natural Environment White Paper here

www.defra.gov.uk/environment/natural/whitepaper/

The Natural Environment White Paper is a bold and ambitious statement outlining the Government’s vision for the natural environment over the next 50 years, backed up with practical action to deliver that ambition.

Nature is sometimes taken for granted and undervalued. But people cannot flourish without the benefits and services our natural environment provides. A healthy, properly functioning natural environment is the foundation of sustained economic growth, prospering communities and personal wellbeing.
