NMFS-Sea Grant Population and Ecosystem Dynamics Fellow Challen Hyman checks on his research plots in the York River on Aug 24, 2021. Hyman’s research at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science focuses on modeling nursery habitat for young blue crabs.

Seagrass meadows are considered the main sanctuary for blue crabs in the Chesapeake Bay — they provide plenty of food for growing crabs and refuge from predators. But these seagrass meadows may not be able to withstand warmer temperatures from climate change.

Hyman’s model will measure how well seagrass — and other alternative nursery habitats, like marsh grass and cloudy water — can support young blue crabs. He will measure blue crab growth, survival, and abundance in these habitats. (Photo by Aileen Devlin | Virginia Sea Grant)

Building on the ‘Ecosystem Landscaping to advance the Accountability to implement the Women’s Empowerment Principles in ASEAN’, the WeEmpowerAsia programme, UN women jointly develops and will disseminate the Building Pathways to Gender Equality and Sustainability through the Women's Empowerment Principles: Thailand Policy Brief (hereafter referred as ‘Thailand Policy Brief’) with key partners, namely the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Office of SMEs Promotion (OSMEP).

Gender Responsive Procurement (GRP) is one of the initiatives recommended in the Thailand Policy Brief. GRP can identify, incorporate and support women business owners seeking to access government/corporate procurement contracts. In support of the initiative, UN Women and Kenan Foundation Asia will host the “IDEA to I do”, a business presentation competition for selected women entrepreneurs, to showcase the capacity of WOB and WLB developed under WeEmpowerAsia Programme as means to promote women’s participation in supply chain. Winners will receive the WeRise Awards and the prizes are comprised of one winner, one first runner-up and one second runner-up.

2- Ecosystems and Communities

A particular example of Avian symbiosis, of the Red-billed Oxpecker (Buphagus erythrorhynchus). It is native to the savannah of sub-Saharan Africa, and south to northern and eastern South Africa. Although it sometimes hawks termite aerially and gleans prey from vegetation, the bulk of its diet are ticks plucked from the skin of large mammals, especially Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardis), classic examples of mutualism are either far more complicated than originally believed, or that they are not mutualisms at all(Plantan et al., 2013; Weeks, 2000). The relationship is obligate for the birds, and it is generally assumed that hosts benefit through a reduction in tick load but they are also known to feed on their host's secretions (e.g., mucus) and to exploit lesions for flesh and blood. (e.g. Weeks, 2000) In addition, both interact with a wide variety of potential hosts. *The picture has a little highlighted mainly green colors
