Solar Eclipse in Leicester

Not the easiest thing in the world to photograph and the sun is a little small, but the smiling sun can be seen shining through the clouds. I like it when a plan comes together and I hope you like this image too.

Timelapse of 3.5 minutes of 2015 total solar eclipse seen from airplane. You see the moon shadow entering from the left and overtaking the airplane to the right. You see that there is light over the horizon, the airplane is simply flying in middle of the shadow.

We were roughly above the Faroe islands.

The cloud cover means there's not much chance of seeing it!

I was lucky enough to get a break in the clouds.

2015 Eclipse viewed over the Amman Valley Carmarthenshire Wales.

Taken around 9.25am as the moon started to move across the sun

No, it's not the 20 March 2015 eclipse - although it looks just like it should have done! This is an image of the new(ish) moon of 22 March with Earthlight brightening the moon's disc.

The EXIF is lying again; this was taken with a D700 and a 500mm reflex lens fed through an x2 doubler to give an equivalent of a 1000mm f/[quite a lot] lens. My tripod really isn't up to extreme zooms like this, but on the other hand I wouldn't be able to afford a 1000mm VR lens, even if Nikon made one!

The air was still so the camera was't blowing around, but it still moved. I used mirror-up mode with a release cable and waited 20 seconds or so for everything to settle down before releasing the shutter. Even then, it took several attempts to get a decent shot.

Rest of my Eclipse pictures

Photo taken by teacher Mr Mark Chilton through a telescope belonging to a member of Bolton Astronomical Society.

Taken through special goggles we found to view the eclipse.

This is effectively the view that we had through the googles. Pretty brilliant, even through the cloud.
