Swan Lake

Like much of Japan, Hokkaido is seismically active. Consequently, hot springs and volcanic vents can be found all across the island. Lake Kussharo, an inland lake in the western region of Hokkaido, is a caldera lake, a remnant of a long-ago erupted volcano. It is the largest of three caldera lakes that make up Akan National Park. And as with most geographic names in Hokkaido, the lake derives its name from the Ainu and the Ainu word “Kuccharo,” means “The place where a lake becomes a river.”

Its violent, seismic past is evident even today, with natural hot springs bubbling up along its shoreline, heating both the water and gravelly shores. It is here where the Whooper Swans gather to find refuge from Hokkaido’s brutally cold winters.

Israel's most venomous snake ☠️

The Israeli mole viper (Atractaspis engaddensis - צפעון שחור) is an extremely venomous snake native to the Middle East.

I've found it crossing a road in the desert and removed it before it gets smashed by a car.

Despite having such strong venom, when threatened, it prefers to coil into a defensive position rather than bite:

It coils into a perfect spiral and tucks its head underneath it.

Nature is awesome.

Dramatic Purple Skies Over Turquoise Rocky Shore

SIGMA Art 18-35 mm f/1.8 DC HSM

Paddyfield Pipit (Anthus rufulus) is a large pipit at 15 cm, but is otherwise an undistinguished looking bird, mainly streaked grey-brown above and pale below with breast streaking. It is long legged with a long tail and a long dark bill. Sexes are similar. Summer and winter plumages are similar. Young birds are more richly coloured below than adults and have the pale edges to the feathers of the upper parts more conspicuous with more prominent spotting on the breast.

Coppersmith barbet (Psilopogon haemacephalus) has crimson forehead and throat which is best known for its metronomic call that has been likened to a coppersmith striking metal with a hammer. It is a resident found in the Indian subcontinent. Like other barbets, they chisel out a hole inside a tree to build their nest. They are mainly fruit eating but will take sometimes insects, especially winged termites. The red forehead, yellow eye-ring and throat patch with streaked underside and green upperparts, it is fairly distinctive. Juveniles are duller and lack the red patches. The sexes are alike.

Jungle Bush Quail (Perdicula asiatica) males has a white moustache, heavily barred white underparts, and variegated wings. The female has a uniform, rich chestnut breast and belly. However, both the male and the female have red and white streaks on the head. It is roughly 16–18 cm in length and weighs 57–81 grams. The diet of the jungle bush quail consists mainly of seeds. particularly of grasses, although it also takes insects. Breeding takes place after the rains and lasts until the onset of colder weather, with the precise period varying across the range; five or six eggs are produced and incubation takes between 16 and 18 days.

A kestrel banking hard over the grasslands, briefly catching the light before turning back into the wind.

Plum-headed Parakeet (Psittacula cyanocephala) is a mainly green parrot, 33 cm long with a tail up to 22 cm. The male has a red head which shades to purple-blue on the back of the crown, nape and cheeks while the female has blueish-gray head. There is a narrow black neck collar with verdigris below on the nape and a black chin stripe that extends from the lower mandible. There is a red shoulder patch and the rump and tail are bluish-green, the latter tipped white. The upper mandible is orangish-yellow, and the lower mandible is dark. The female has a dull bluish grey head and lacks the black and verdigris collar which is replaced by yellow. The upper-mandible is corn-yellow and there is no black chin stripe or red shoulder patch. Immature birds have a green head and both mandibles are yellowish. The dark head is acquired after a year. The delicate bluish red appearance resembling the bloom of a peach is produced by a combination of blue from the optical effects produced by the rami of the feather and a red pigment in the barbules.

Jerdon's Leafbird (Chloropsis jerdoni) males are green-bodied with a yellow-tinged head, black face and throat. It has a blue moustachial line. The female differs in that it has a greener head and blue throat, and young birds are like the female but without the blue throat patch.Like other leafbirds, the call of Jerdon's leafbird consists of a rich mixture of imitations of the calls of various other species of birds. It has traditionally been considered a subspecies of the blue-winged leafbird , but differ in measurements and morphology, it lacking the blue flight feathers for which the blue-winged leafbird was name.

Cinereous Tit ( Parus cinereus ) has a broad black ventral line and has no crest. The underparts are white with the black central stripe running along the length. The female has a narrower ventral line and is slightly duller. The upper tail coverts are ashy while the tail is black with the central 4 pairs of feathers ashy on the outer webs and all but the central pair are tipped white. The fifth pair is white with a black rachis and a band of black on the inner web. The outermost pair of tail feathers are all white with a black shaft. The undertail coverts are black towards the centre but white on the sides. This tit is part of a confusing group of species but is distinct in having a grey-back, black hood, white cheek patch and a white wing-bar.

Indian peafowl (Pavo cristatus) males are metallic blue on the crown, the feathers of the head being short and curled. The fan-shaped crest on the head is made of feathers with bare black shafts and tipped with bluish-green webbing. A white stripe above the eye and a crescent shaped white patch below the eye are formed by bare white skin. The sides of the head have iridescent greenish blue feathers. The back has scaly bronze-green feathers with black and copper markings.

Orange-tip in my back garden this morning

Honestly I am still so pleased to have got this fabulous shot yesterday morning. It wasn’t that easy, I was lucky enough to catch him when eventually he was taking a break.

Merlin (Falco columbarius) has a blue-grey back, ranging from almost black to silver-grey in different subspecies. Its underparts are buff- to orange-tinted and more or less heavily streaked with black to reddish brown. The female and immature are brownish-grey to dark brown above, and whitish buff spotted with brown below. Besides a weak whitish supercilium and the faint dark malar stripe—which are barely recognizable in both the palest and the darkest birds—the face of the merlin is less strongly patterned than in most other falcons

The Ural owl (Strix uralensis) is a fairly large nocturnal owl. It is a member of the true owl family, Strigidae. Both its common name and scientific name refer to the Ural Mountains of Russia where the type specimen was collected. However, this species has an extremely broad distribution that extends as far west as much of Scandinavia, montane eastern Europe, and, sporadically, central Europe across the Palearctic broadly through Russia to as far east as Sakhalin and throughout Japan. The Ural owl may include up to 15 subspecies, but most likely the number may be slightly fewer if accounting for clinal variations.

This forest owl is typical associated with the vast taiga forest in Eurosiberia, although it ranges to other forest types, including mixed forests and temperate deciduous forest. Ural owls tend to vigorously protect a set territory on which they have historically nested on a variety of natural nest sites, including tree cavities and stumps and nests originally built by other birds but now, in many parts of the range are adapted to nest boxes made by biologists and conservationists.

S. u. hondoensis (Clark 1907)- This race may include S. u. japonica. If it includes japonica, this race is found throughout Hokkaido down through northern and central Honshu. Quite to the contrary of Bergmann's rule, northern owls in Hokkaido are the smallest ones, and indeed the smallest known in the entire Ural owl species, while southerly owls are slightly larger. Otherwise birds from the different islands are similar in appearance.

There is a moment on the slopes of Sulphur Mountain where the dense subalpine forest parts just enough to offer a glimpse of something entirely unexpected. Behind you, the gondola cables hum; ahead, the world drops away into a massive, glacially carved trough.

Framed tightly by the rugged, deep-green silhouettes of native evergreens, the Bow Valley opens up below. The composition is built on contrasts—the deep, rich shadows of the foreground trees force your eyes straight through the natural window toward the sunlit valley floor. Far below, tracing the winding contours of the Bow River, lies the emerald ribbon of the Banff Springs Golf Course. From this altitude, the manicured fairways and pristine greens look like an intricate miniature model, a brief patch of human design neatly tucked into an otherwise unapologetic wilderness.

But the true scale hits you when you lift your gaze beyond the valley floor. Rising sharply against a deep, intensely saturated blue sky is the snow-dusted grandeur of the Fairholme Range. The harsh alpine light catches the jagged, glacier-scoured peaks, highlighting every ridge and crevasse in stark, high-contrast relief. Towering cumulus clouds drift lazily over the summits, casting dramatic, moving shadows that sweep across the valley, constantly shifting the mood of the landscape.

It’s a scene that demands a pause. The sheer verticality of the Canadian Rockies is laid bare here—from the meticulously placed pins on the greens thousands of feet below, straight up to the timeless, frozen peaks that scrape the sky.

Rufous Treepie (Dendrocitta vagabunda) is cinnamon with a black head and the long graduated tail is bluish grey and is tipped in black. The wing has a white patch. The only confusable species is the grey treepie which however lacks the bright rufous mantle. The bill is stout with a hooked tip. The underparts and lower back are a warm tawny-brown to orange-brown in colour with white wing coverts and black primaries. The bill, legs and feet are black.

This young male lion, caked in mud after a night of chasing and clashing with a buffalo, sits in the Mara with a piercing, unflinching gaze. His mane may still be growing, but his spirit already carries the weight of survival, resilience, and the untamed battles of Africa’s wilderness.

Crested Lark (Galerida cristata) is species of lark by the crest of feathers that rise up in territorial or courtship displays and when singing. It is a non-migratory bird.It is roughly the same size as a Eurasian skylark, but shorter overall and bulkier around the head and body, and very similar in appearance, with a height of 17 cm and a wingspan of 29 to 38 cm , weighing between 37 and 55 g .It is a small, brown bird which has a short tail with light brown outer feathers. Male and females have no real differences, but young crested larks have more spots on their back than their older counterparts. Its plumage is downy but sparse and appears whitish.

Indian Blue Robin (Larvivora brunnea) is similar in size to the bluethroat at 15 cm long. The adult male has blue upperparts and rufous underparts. A bright white supercilium contrasts with a black mask that continues down the neck. The lower belly and undertail are also whitish. The female is olive brown above and buff below with a light eye-ring and rufescent rump. The breast and flanks are buffy. Young birds are dark brown with buff spots. They winter in the hill forests of the Western Ghats of India and in Sri Lanka.

A Little Owl (Athene noctua) perched on a lichen-covered branch, carefully observing its surroundings. This small owl, recognizable by its bright yellow eyes and spotted brown plumage, is commonly found in rural landscapes across Europe.

Patient and alert, the Little Owl often hunts insects, small rodents, and other prey from low perches such as fence posts, trees, or old farm structures. Captured in soft natural light, this moment highlights the quiet beauty of European wildlife.

Cumberland Falls, the crown jewel of Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, sits deep within the rugged landscape of Daniel Boone National Forest in southeastern Kentucky. Located southwest of Corbin, this powerful waterfall sends the Cumberland River over a wide stone ledge into a dramatic Appalachian gorge, creating rising mist and refracted light.

This Cinematic Blue version highlights the cooler tones, deep shadows, and atmospheric mist that shape the mood of the falls. As the spray lifts, sunlight often creates a brilliant daytime rainbow — and on clear full-moon nights, this location becomes one of the few places in the world where you can witness a natural moonbow.
