CHARMING little reedbed specialist has a rather compact, rounded body and a proportionately very long tail. The distinctive call has earned the species the affectionate nickname of "pinger" which utters a diagnostic, high-pitched ping call.. Was overjoyed to get this chance encounter at Oare Marshes in Kent of a male, as I normally only see the female or juveniles, a bit of a nemesis bird for me.

La Sittelle torchepot ( Sitta europaea ) est un oiseau dit cavernicole en ce sens qu'il niche dans un trou d'arbre, plus rarement dans une cavité de mur ou de rocher. Il occupe souvent un nid vacant de pic. Il ne creuse que très rarement sa propre cavité. C'est en squattant les logis abandonnés d'oiseaux plus grands que la Sittelle torchepot fait preuve d'une autre originalité. En effet le trou de vol étant trop grand pour ses besoins, elle s'emploie à le rétrécir afin qu'il n'atteigne que 29-3l mm, ce qui en interdit l'entrée à d'autres candidats, comme l'étourneau par exemple.
C'est le travail de la femelle. Au moyen de boulettes de terre ou d'argile imprégnées de salive, elle maçonne soigneusement un chambranle aux dimensions voulues. C'est cette aptitude qui lui a valu le qualificatif de torchepot (torchis).

This handsome wild Stallion was taken in Utah. There are many bands of wild horses in the west. My understanding is that they arrived with the Spanish and became feral over time. They are a controversial subject in that the cattle farmers feel that they compete with the sometimes meager resources available in a lot of the BLM land and argue that they eat deeper into the roots of the vegetation. My horse whisperer friends deny that and make the strong case that the where the horses have roamed for years the vegetation has remained unchanged. Water sources are often provided by the hand of man and I'm not sure how well the horses would do without our aid. In Dugway, where this image was taken, the herds have been culled due to lack of resources. Similarly, in Nevada, herd culling is always underway and the controversies and arguments there are never ending. Nevada uses prisoners to capture and break the horses for eventual resale, I hope. I think if I were serving time I'd volunteer for that job. My take is that many of these states are failing to realize the potential tourist dollars that could be earned by attracting more outdoor photographers to wild horse country. Not that I'm complaining!
Well earned meal. This Kestrel was hunting for his brood . Sometimes you have to take some for yourself in order to do that. After taking a part of the prey he flew off to feed the brood.

Now that the bright sunshine has disappeared and, in the quest to get something topical that didn't feature bleached-out greens, I took Norman Tebbit's advice and got on my bike yesterday.
Heading over to the Warrington area I stopped off at Moss Lane Bridge in Moore and bagged this shot of DRS class 88 unit 88002 'Prometheus' hurrying south with the 5.48am Mossend - Daventry containers (4M27).
In the background can be seen the uprights of the Gentlemen of Moore Rugby Union Football Club - sadly enduring an enforced closure at this time and, like many similar sporting clubs, hoping they will be able to recover once the lockdown is lifted.
At least 88002 seems to be having no such problem and is busy generating some cash for Direct Rail Services.

It is strange to think that such a beautiful plant as the Foxglove could be so toxic. Yet Foxglove plants have earned several sinister sounding names such as Dead Man's Bells and Witch's Gloves.
Depending on the species, the digitalis plant may contain several deadly physiological and chemically related cardiac and steroidal glycosides. The toxins can be absorbed by simply touching them or ingesting them.
Tofu earned the nickname Dragon as a kitten when he used to hiss and spit at the older cats of the family to impress them and wanted them to believe that he was a big fearsome dragon. It didn't really work as everbody knew from the beginning that he was a rather innocent soul.
