The figure shows MRI, and typical [18F]FDG images from a healthy volunteer and a Alzheimer Disease (AD) patient. The color scale express the rate of glucose utilization (from minimum to maximum). In these PET (Positron Emission Tomography) images (column 2 and 3), the white and red colors represent the regions of the brain with the highest glucose utilization rates while the green and blue represent the hypometabolic brain areas.

The arrows show the posterior temporo-parietal junction (lower row) and the posterior cingulate gyrus (top row).

The Fairmont in Downtown San Jose used pink lights to support breast cancer awareness tonight. Oh yeah, there was a full moon tonight too..

Early Detection saves lives

This is not a new photo. I took these shots about a year ago. I don't think these are good photos of me nor is this a good example of cloning. You can read why this shot was done in the original description below. As for why I've bumped this up and made it public... Well... the multiplying factor just seemed appropriate somehow because...

I have cancer.

I found out the day before Christmas that what I have is a particularly nasty form of Esophageal Cancer that is rarely detected until it's in a very late stage, as mine is. Until now, the only people who know are family and my closest friends.

I've had all the tests done over the last couple of weeks which is why I haven't been around to see all of you, my flickr friends. I just wanted you all to know that I won't be around flickr for awhile.

I'm not looking for anything here other than your thoughts and prayers. I need all the help I can get. Feel free to comment if you like but don't feel obligated to do so. I may not even get time to read them. My mind has been a bit preoccupied lately as I'm sure you can imagine.

But if anything good can come out of this, I'd like to warn all of you with acid reflux. Do not take it lightly. Prilosec and Nexium and Protonix all help you cope and allow you to live a normal life. But that doesn't mean there isn't anything wrong.

GET AN ENDOSCOPY!

If I had done that in June of 2007 when it was suggested to me, today, I would be telling you about how I was cured because of early detection. Instead, I'm asking you to pray for me.

I hope to see you all back here on flickr in a few months!

...Steve

OK, here's another one for your amusement. This is NOT for public consumption!!! I'm still working on lighting, this time for a group shot. My room is too small and my lights are not big enough! :(

I think I need "me sitting on the left" to switch with "I on the right". Next time I'll try to vary the facial non-expression and I may even find a different pose. :) I have the left shoulder of "Me, Myself and I" in the front and the right shoulder of "I and I" in the back. Damn! That wasn't supposed to happen.

Breast Cancer Awareness Pink Tree Lighting 2011

In honor of a family member we lost to breast cancer Theresa Irene Wolowski and Ryan Janek Wolowski, first lit this Kanzan tree in pink lights as a tribute to Maura Wolowski on 11-14-2010

After the tree was lit with pink mini holiday lights we said a prayer for Maura Wolowski and her surviving family members. She is still very much loved and not forgotten.

Please encourage the ones you love to have a screening for breast cancer.

During the holiday season we often gather and see family members. We are hoping this pink tree will make it easier and more likely that folks with be able to talk about breast cancer with their family members as well as their doctors.

for example..Hey did you hear Aunt Theresa did a pink tree on her front lawn? Really why? She made a breast cancer awareness tree, instantly the whole room had an easy way to start talking about cancer, without it being a total downer and with early detection being your friend, we encourage everyone to get involved.

This tree is planted on Long Island New York where the cancer rate is very high.

The 2011 lighting took place on 11-12-2011 and was attended by Rich Wolowski, Theresa Irene Wolowski, Ryan Janek Wolowski, Girish Bhasin and John Erario. This years dedication was that of Cancer Recovery and we dedicated this to both Judy Wolowski and friend of the family Dorthy Phister who both were recently diagnosed with cancer. And with this early detection we are wishing them both a speedy recovery.

Talk about this with your loved ones and make sure to get checked regularly.

New figures just released as part of the Ultimate Skincare campaign show that image-obsessed Brits are six times more worried about putting on a pound or two than changes to their skin which could indicate early signs of skin cancer.

A whopping 69% of us still aren't checking our skin regularly for changes associated with skin cancer and a worrying 57% don't even know what they should be looking for. Find out how to check your skin at www.ultimateskincare.org using our ABCDE guide.

Eating out is something we do less of these days. But it is a favorite for me, even though we cook quite a bit. Documenting my day as memory starts to diminish. The slow goodbye.

Soldiers, Airmen and members of the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson community run a breast cancer awareness 5K run at JBER, Alaska, Sept. 28, 2018. More than 300 people rallied together to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. October is nationally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month with the goal of raising awareness of breast cancer signs and symptoms and emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis. (U.S. Air Force photo by Senior Airman Curt Beach)

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and since I am a breast cancer survivor I just want to take a little time to advocate monthly self breast exams.

I found a lump during a monthly exam when I was only 28 years of age in 1993. I had a lumpectomy and radiation treatments and have been cancer free and healthy now for 14 years! So please..make monthly exams a priority and if you are a man, talk to your partners about this issue. Early detection is important. For more information go to

www.cbcf.org/breastcancer/

There, now that I am done doing the preachy thing (which usually isn't my style)..I hope you all have a great October. I will be away much of the month visiting family, but will be checking in every once in a while.

Take care all!

My wife saw these on the way to work one day. I went out to find them as I am so closely associated with their fight against breast cancer and it's early detection. What a great way to raise awareness and hopefully funds. Go to the link below for more information.

I also just found a Flickr group for them...

So I have more than one large mole on my face and all over my body. Generally they don't bother me but that big one on my chin hurt a couple of weeks ago. The dermatologist I had seen 6 years ago said that if I saw / felt any changes, I should go see a doc. So I did. My moles are pretty much of no concern as they have smooth borders and are symmetrical and all of the ones on my face are very alike. And hair grows out of them. Apparently that is a good thing. I fail to see how hair growing out of a mole on my face can be a good thing! There is more than enough unwanted facial hair on my face already!

The other good news is that persons wth darker skin are less likely to get melanoma. Sorry if this is not so good for you because your skin has less melanin than mine. :-( Wear sunscreen and a hat to avoid being affected by UV rays.

If I *want*, it can be removed. It will leave me with a whitish scar which can be covered up with make-up. Lipstick is the only make-up I wear regularly. I think it will look odd on my chin. :-)

Yeah, why get into scalpels, I thought. Just to look good a little better? So I don't think I am opting for a white scar in place of this thing, the mole. Besides, I don't think my insurance will cover elective surgery unless I can get the doc to call it preventive surgery, which if she values her licence, I know she will not do.

Anyway, if you have moles and they:

- are asymmetrical

- have an irregular or scalloped border

- vary in color from one area to another (from tan to brown to black or even white, red and blue)

- are larger than 6mm

go see a dermatologist as these are signs of a malignant melanoma.

Our school district lost a feisty 39 year old dance teacher recently to a malignant melanoma that spread to her lungs.

Happy Cytotechnology Day!

Today is the anniversary of the birth of Dr. Papanicolaou..the inventor of the Pap Smear. Millions of lives have been saved because of the early detection of cancer cells in this diagnostic test for women. ASCUS (sounds like... ask us) stands for Atypical Cells of Undetermined Significance.

Lower Great Lakes FWCO STEP Employee, Robert Haltner, removing water chestnut rosettes that have expanded from the source location in Ellicott Creek Park. Since 2008, Lower Great Lakes FWCO crews have conducted weekly summer surveillence up to 10 miles away from the source location to eliminate any expanding plants. In 2010, over 2,000 rosettes were collected outside the park. So far in 2012, very few rosettes have been found, likely due to consistent early detection efforts.
