Welcome to Karterados

The traditional village of Karterados is built beside a stream in a ravine. Its existence is recorded back to the 17th century. The original dwellings are cave houses built deep into the rock face. During the 19th century, it was one of the large sea captain villages on the island. The name of the village comes from the Greek word 'karteri' = waiting point or ambush point, probably because ambushes were set to trap marauding pirates.

The village square has a traditional windmill and a memorial plaque to commemorate those who died in the Second World War. On the left hand side as you leave the square, the road curves sharply to the left, and there you will discover the 'Steps of Galaios'. Barely visible from the main road is a small neighbourhood of cobbled streets, Captains houses and cave houses built into the rock.

The shops are open all year round, since Karterados also has a considerable number of permanent residents.

Which Came First, the Chicken or the Egg?

Hannah Gale

There was a little dinosaur,

who made a rock his friend.

He took the rock everywhere,

and said he'd keep it till the end.

One day it was a wee bit cold,

so he held it very close.

But when he felt it start to move,

he thought that it was gross.

First popped out the little head,

then some arms and legs.

So which one really did come first?

The chicken? No. The egg.

Day 180/365:

A bit short of time today by the time I remembered I hadn't got my photo. I grabbed my 70-200 to see if I could get a bit of an arty flower shot. This is a double exposure. The first really close up and blurred, the second in focus. The intense pink from the first shot against the green backdrop, gave the brownish tinge. A bit of faffing then a couple of textures added.

The way I see things, the way I see life, I see

it as a struggle. And there's a great deal

of reward I have gained coming to that

understanding -- that existence is a struggle.

The existence of large basins in the sea, carved in the sandstone rock known as “pedra tosca”, and popularly called “Baños de la Reina”, have been responsible for naming the entire archaeological site.

Although these nurseries or "swimming pools" are related to the breeding of live fish, their possible use as a water garden for the contemplation of marine beauty is not ruled out, like other high imperial "villae" of the Tyrrhenian, where these facilities , expensive to build and costly to maintain, were also a sign of the power and social prestige of its owner.

Situated in the Carmichael estate, Lanark, the Carmichael family have been in existence since the 1300AD but this house was built in the 16th century after the two parts of the Carmichael family split around 1500AD. The first reference to the house was on the ordnance maps dated 1654AD, The house went through some structural changes up until 1789AD. During the war in 1940 it housed the Polish army stationed in the area. The last member of the family Richard Carmichael inherited the house in 1980 but due to extensive dry rot all efforts to save this house failed & it fell into dereliction from that moment on.

Each and every moment of existence, no matter how stressful or how fleeting, contains the potential for spaciousness.

Sit with a cup of tea before sipping. Close your eyes and breathe for a while before reading. Give yourself a little space. Feel your soul arriving in restfulness.

THESE ARE THE DAYS – VAN MORRISON

The fragility of roses, aconites and poppies too

the fragrance so delicate as memories of you

the perfume wafts through the warm Summer air

and settles in the palm of my hand

another gentle breeze and it is on it's way

maybe to the Pacific, who knows; who can say

to the waters as blue as a Himalayan poppy

to the land where tranquil emerald waterfalls flow

I listen to the silent notes

that exist between your hearts and mine

to the melody that runs through me;

to the tunes that I know

those precious echoes through time and space

no distance can dim their warm and gentle beat

or eradicate the sweet aroma you leave behind

that fills my nostrils with it's heady scent

I crush the petals beneath my bare feet

those velvet-coated ones that fell down

they will return to the soft furrows of this earth

enriching it and waiting for another such precious moment in time

when the seasons change and a chill may be felt

still my memories will keep me warm and icy days will gently melt

and pictures in the log fire will incite my imagination

making vivid all those good times that we had

and all those moments we've still yet to come

Our journey takes us far and wide

the boat docks at many a distant shore

where friends we loved became our Family

and deeper than a blood-tie we are bound together

sailing to the warm Pacific

to the Eastern land of all our dreams

where we will take cups of tea on camomile lawns

where a little rabbit plays happily with many cats

the sharp edges of reality once keenly felt

now softened by the fresh painted sweeps of an apricot dawn

and walk along the shores of a tranquil turquoise sea

with honey-combed rocks and distant mountain peaks

sweet cakes of all kinds and endless cups of tea

where all dreams come true and we no longer need seek

I will sing to you sweet lullabies that will lull you to sleep

and when you awake in the morning

the flowers will smell as sweet as all of our memories

and keepsakes will be tied with silk and velvet ribbons

sprinkled with rose water and wrapped within faded pages of lemon

and brought out when spirits need reviving

so that always when you sip your sweet cups of tea

you will keep me safe in your hearts my friends … my Family

and I will keep you in mine for all of eternity.

This is most likely the single documented memory of this trees existence. At the time I took the photo it was the atmosphere and the isolation from nearby trees that caught my attention. In the long run this has become an oddly historical photo. The backstory, prior to hurricane Irma in 2019 this wetland had numerous mature trees that were decimated by the fierce winds and eventually they were removed by the home owners association. This young tree survived the storm because it was shrouded by the mature trees and it grew quickly after there was nothing to block it’s growth any longer.

After this photo was taken last year some uninformed people chose to remove this tree for unknown reasons. They learned that this tree species is protected by state law after the fact. They were fined and supposed to replace it which there is not evidence that it was replaced. However, the point is they did what was right in their own eyes without knowledge of laws to protect endangered plant and wildlife species. We are all guilty of acting without good intel at one point or another during our lives and this is a reminder we should think twice before leaping.

I am forever grateful that this tree spoke loud enough to my inner being to preserve it’s memory and short life.

UPDATE: I walked the area this week where the tree had stood

and was pleasantly surprised to see that not only one tree had been planted but three new trees had been planted in replacement of this little one who’s time was shortened.

Thanks so much for your time♡(*•̀ᴗ•́)♡

Many thanks to you !!

In 2005 I participated in a contest hosted by FBTB to design and build an Imperial Voidfighter. My entry at the time was mediocre. Here is a reimagined version of the Voidfighter more than 17 years later, featuring a pilot minifig with an extremely rare dark bluish gray snowtrooper helmet from around 2010 (only 2 known in existence).

You can see the original contest entries on Flickr.

"Every moment of one's existence one is growing into more or retreating into less."

-Norman Mailer

Stunning work of the students in Theater Art of Liege .

One of the most relaxing things for me it's to be on a big beach with no one else. Just the sound of the waves...

Today was the time of one of those moments.

The man measured his life between trees

With each new oak, aspen, elm, or palm

He would force himself

To make a decision

Often, they were completely Inconsequential

He’d decide to text his daughter Hello

To schedule a meet up with a friend to play cards

Or what he might eat for lunch

On occasion, reaching

The next tree

Helped with more momentous choices

Should he move closer to his son and grandson?

Should he give a substantial donation to clarity?

Should he invite his landscaper’s family of refugees to stay with him if they didn’t feel safe?

Weighing each choice and alternatives,

He noticed the peeling bark of the elm tree and

How the white revealed a wound of red-orange.

He observed the eyes of the Aspen trunks staring at him

With no way of speaking a solution.

He noticed how the shape of the oak tree leaves

Were unlike any other.

He breathed deeply and reminded himself that,

As a tree takes decades to grow,

A decision can take a substantial time to make as well.

The problem with trees is actually a problem with humans.

We aren’t usually careful enough with our choices

Sometimes it’s our fault when the trees burn down.

All it takes is a mere moment of flippancy.

This man will walk for hours or

Days if he has to

Until he runs out of trees to

Inspire him to stop procrastinating

Then, he’ll look around in a state

Of both awe and horror

Unable to put another foot forward.

In my existence,,i realized that happiness is a very subjective factor in one's life...

Being happy doesnt depend on achieving what you want; it is makin the best out of what is given....

Life isnt fair,,it never was...

the only thing that can make you completely happy is contentment...

be contented of what you have ,,but be sure to aim high and never stop believing you can do better everytime...

but if all else fails,,dont forget that an ordinary you has an extraordinary God to back you up...:)

Cracked, split, and bent over, this Red Cedar at the marsh edge on Savage Island lives on.

Contemplating life, why are we here?

Clinging to existence on this earthly sphere

Sitting by a lake, thinking and wondering

Listening to the sound of the sky thundering

Are humans meant to contaminate the air?

Or strip the forests until they are bare

Are humans meant to kill and to maim?

Is it all part of the evolutionary game?

Maybe there really is an omnipresent god

Looking down, thinking they’re odd

I gave them a lovely planet, full of many wonders

They keep making, such elementary blunders

Like filling the oceans full of nuclear waste

Destroying the ozone layer with indecent haste

Pretending they don't see, others dying of need

Declaring wars, until the earth it does bleed

Contemplating life, why are we here?

Clinging to existence on this earthly sphere

By a lake, that is mysteriously gleaming

I stand contemplating, life's real meaning
