One of the first bug shots of 2019 for me, this cute female zebra spider (Salticus scenicus) posing on a nice yellow Phalaenopisis orchid.

This was shot with the Canon MP-E65mm 1-5x Macro lens which I've just learned actually saves the magnification level of the shot in the EXIF info. By using the program ExifTool I could extract this and thus know this was taken at 3:1 magnification.

The snow at Lassen, locals say, arrives early and departs late. With the snow in retreat the wildflowers (Mules Ears) have emerged; Lassen is now in full bloom.

• Save to Olympus RAW (ORF)

Workflow

• rawtherapee v4.2 to "develop" the RAW image. Adjust the image's exposure to -1,0ev, -0,5ev, +0,0ev, +0,5ev, +1,0ev, +1,5ev, and +2,0ev. Save each exposure to a 16-bit TIFF for a total of seven TIFFs.

• enfuse v4.1.2 to blend the image stack. I.e. process the TIFF images from rawtherapee in the initial step above by fusing them into a single 16-bit TIFF image.

• rawtherapee again, to boost constrast and apply film simulation filter using HALD CLUT (Color LookUp Table) pattern files. I.e. take the enfused image and simulate a Kodachrome 200 capture.

• Apply output sharpening with Focus Magic*.

• exiftool v9.46 to copy the .ORF EXIF tags back into the final JPEG. And to set other tags, e.g. keywords.

• digikam v3.5.0 to geotag image.

• Linux Kubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr).

• MSI GT683 laptop with an Intel i7-2630QM Quad-core 2.0GHz processor and w/16GB RAM.

* Focus Magic is a Windows application. To run it on Linux, WINE v1.6 is required.
