Washington Park Botanical Garden is presenting a Botanical Infusion Exhibit. Featuring more than 20 pieces by local glass artist Ed Martin with collaboration in metal by artists Darrin Miller, Ed Fraase and Brian Luparell.

The warm air in the botanical dome was a welcome contrast to the very cold and blustery day outside.

These glass and metal works of art both stood out and bleneded with the variety of green plants.

I spent a delightful hour, soaking up the warmth, the beauty and artistic skills on display.

It was a real challenge to take good photos of the glass pieces. The dome above, fills the garden with soft light and the glare on the glass was everywhere.

I was taking photos from all angles. I got a few good ones out of over 230+ frames taken.

This circular piece picks up the stripes from the leaves underneath and some of the surrounding leaves. It caught my eye, but was tough to get without glare.

Mail Call tells the fascinating story of military mail and communication—from the American Revolution to current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Throughout American history, the military and postal service have combined forces to deliver mail under challenging—often extreme—circumstances. But whether it takes place at headquarters or in hostile territory, on a submarine or in the desert, mail call forges a vital link with home.

Mail Call features a number of items that bring to life the story of military mail. One such highlight is a kit with supplies for “Victory Mail,” a microfilm process developed in World War II to dramatically shrink the volume and weight of personal letters. Beginning in 1942, V-Mail used standardized stationery and microfilm processing to produce lighter, smaller cargo—150,000 microfilmed letters could fit in one mailbag. Visitors will also gain access to dramatic firsthand records and heartfelt sentiments through excerpts from letters exchanged between writers on the front line and the home front. The exhibit also explores how the military postal system works today and describes the new ways men and women of the armed forces are communicating with home.

Mail Call is a National Postal Museum exhibition organized and circulated by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES).

From November 9, 2013 through January 20, 2014, Cape Fear Museum is pleased to offer FREE admission for active duty military and their families (with valid ID) in conjunction with the Mail Call exhibit. Special thanks to the Smithsonian Community Grant program, supported by MetLife Foundation.
