Ocellated Skink (Chalcides Ocellatus)
my second of its kind nab again in Greece on the island of Rhodes
It is a long cylindrical lizard with short legs with five fingers. Thanks to the undulations of his body, he digs loose sand, a process that evokes swimming. Other species that do this have a more serpent-like appearance than the Ocellated Skink, with their limbs reduced with only three fingers, if any. Unusually for a burrowing lizard, it has eyelids and, its brown body is covered in smooth, shiny scales
"The Happy Family" is a renowned painting created by the Dutch artist Jan Steen. Painted during the 17th century, Steen was known for his ability to capture scenes of everyday life with a touch of humor and wit. "The Happy Family" exemplifies his style and showcases his talent for storytelling within a single image.
In this painting, Steen depicts a bustling household filled with various members of a family engaged in different activities. The composition is lively and intricate, presenting a chaotic yet harmonious scene. Steen's attention to detail is evident as he portrays each character with unique facial expressions and body language, adding depth and personality to the painting.
At the center of the composition, a jovial couple sits at a table, surrounded by their children and other relatives. The scene is filled with laughter, lively conversation, and playful interactions. The family members engage in various activities, such as eating, drinking, playing music, and engaging in games. Steen's use of vibrant colors and intricate brushwork further enhances the joyful atmosphere of the painting.
Despite the apparent chaos, "The Happy Family" also carries a deeper message. It serves as a reminder of the importance of familial bonds and the joys of shared moments. Steen's portrayal of the diverse characters and their interactions reflects the complexities and dynamics of family life. Through his portrayal, he highlights both the humorous and challenging aspects of domesticity.
"The Happy Family" is a testament to Jan Steen's skill as a painter and his ability to capture the essence of human experience. It continues to be appreciated for its rich storytelling, vibrant imagery, and its ability to evoke a range of emotions from viewers. The painting stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of art that celebrates the joys and challenges of family life.
A grey heron perched on a branch near the water's edge. Tall reeds and branches frame the foreground, while the water and a rocky, arid background provide contrast. The bird appears to be either a Grey Heron or a Great Blue Heron, which are very similar species.
Herons often stand motionless as they scan for prey or wade with deliberate steps. This title highlights their hunting technique.
The image utilizes natural framing with the dense vegetation on the left and bottom guiding the viewer's eye towards the heron and the open water. The heron is positioned off-center, adhering roughly to the rule of thirds.
The scene appears to be well-lit, likely under bright daylight, creating strong highlights on the water and the rocky terrain in the background. The lighting highlights the textures of the reeds, the water ripples, and the bird's feathers.
The colors are vibrant, featuring deep greens from the reeds, blues from the water, and earthy browns/tans from the rocks and dry vegetation. The heron's grey-blue plumage stands out against the background.
The photograph evokes a serene, natural atmosphere, capturing a quiet moment of wildlife in its habitat. The bird's still posture and focus on the water give the impression of a watchman guarding the riverbank.
"Purer colors... have in themselves, independently of the objects they serve to express, a significant action on the feelings of those who look at them."

Robert Jenyns (1944-2015)

- aluminium, steel, timber.
My two sculpture choices today can be linked by the concept of whimsy. This little caravan can be found down by the Yarra River at the back of the Heide property. It is clearly a tribute to a kid's Meccano set. But there's more to it than that.
The late Bob Jenyns was born in Victoria, but spent some time teaching art in Tasmania. His little caravan is a tribute to one of his great mentors, Albert Tucker (1914-1999). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Tucker_(artist)
In the 1950s Tucker was a struggling artist in Paris. He hand-built a little caravan which he parked by the River Seine, and Jenyns has here made a scale model of it. For this work Jenyns won Australia’s leading sculpture prize – the 2008 Helen Lempriere National Sculpture Award. This sculpture has been displayed in numerous settings, but it has finally found a home by another river in the Antipodes. There is something about this location, near what is called John's Wild Wood (planted by John Reed), that evokes a sense of nostalgia.

Mediobogdum Roman Fort Wall slightly rebuilt defending history and evoking mystery against a backdrop of towering majesty in Eskdale
www.flickr.com/photos/phhsykes/albums/72177720308600510
This historic site needs no reflection to admire the work of our ancestors and of nature, but the reflections do add to my consideration and appreciation.
Evening approaches and the shadow slightly encroaches on your imagination building and extending possible former construction and stirring ideas of formal occupation and informal habitation. This fort is built near the mountain passes that vehicles struggle across. To see the well set stone amongst the transformed landscape is to be amongst living food for the soul. Well it is if you have your way of enjoying history.
The feelings so easily generated here give you an insight into the way we humans focus on an importance and build around it, but when our human systems change we walk away from our former focus and take away the resources we were investing. Then the historic value gives us focus renewed to map, to rebuild a little and to conserve the memory making place. The history of this one Roman Fort positioned along a trade route near the edge of a vast Empire still standing near the narrow single track byway that never attracted industrial traffic and road building tells us much about ourselves and human interest.
Mediobogdum Roman Fort on Hardknott Pass in the Lake District has some great slightly rebuilt ruins. The light on this evening was a splendid Sun bath and banquet lighting the way to older notions and even initiation upon a ladder of lights that illuminated all of the ways to become enlightened, ignited and rejoicing in the light. This remote mountain pass with amazing ruin is an almost unbelievable location to find history and to enjoy mystery.

I hope you enjoy seeing a glimpse into the home of Claude Monet. As you step inside, you can imagine this artist making many trips between his studio and the garden. On the walls are reproductions of his work that evoke the atmosphere during Monet's time. Many of the originals that were kept in this room are now seen at Musée Marmottan-Monet in Paris.
It’s a serene evening in the Vesterbro Apartment, where sleek industrial fixtures meet lush greenery, evoking the perfect depiction of an industrial jungle haven. The air is a delightful mix of new upholstery, tea, smoke, and fresh leaves. The vibe is casual yet eclectic, a perfect blend of modern city life and tropical escape.
In the midst of it all, a Siamese kitty dramatically paws at a map, clearly eager to share tales of its many adventures while another waits patiently on the couch for you. It’s the perfect time to unwind with a glass of wine or tea, sink into the sofa, and listen to a record or two while snuggling with your feline travel guide.

Christmas trees have traditionally been evergreen conifers, such as a pine or fir trees, which for centuries have been used to celebrate winter festivals in both the Christian and pagan tradition. Thousands of years ago, pagan celebrations involved the use of branches to decorate homes for the winter solstice, evoking themes of the incoming season of spring where trees and flowers would bloom once more.
Having just sounded the whistle through the south end of Garsdale station, the driver of Bulleid 'Merchant Navy' Pacific 35018 'British India Line' acknowledges the signalman's wave. This was the 1Z52 07:48 Chester to Carlisle 'The Dalesman' charter on Tuesday 8th September 2020, for me evoking childhood memories of such locomotives heading through similar conditions on the L&SWR main line from Waterloo during the winter months when London smogs were prevalent. The air at Garsdale on this occasion however, was somewhat more healthy than one could have experienced on occasions in London and Suburbia in the 1950s and early 1960s!

I can't believe how many emotions these little towns around us evoke in me. I feel closer at home here than anyone else. Its like walking through history and listening to their stories. It just feels right. After walking around for a few hours and exploring we ended up at a little local store and talked to the owner and he told us about the city in it's glorious days, when all the neon signs still worked and the strrets where filled with life..now half the town is a ghost town... So sad to see it that way, but amazing to share this history with our children.
