During the last days, the clouds were spectacular. Sometimes heavy and menacing, and sometimes delicate and serene, as in this image. This image was made in the countryside of the Upper Palatinate, on the plateaus between the rivers Laaber and Naab.

or maybe grey on grey......

It was indeed a grey morning when I took a turn around the Master's garden at The Hospital of St Cross and Almshouse of Noble Poverty in late December and noticed these few leaves clinging on to a plant growing by the pond in the walled garden.

I have an annual Friends' pass to the almshouse grounds, the Norman church and the medieval quarters. Somehow I did not use it so much last year and mean to rectify that this year.

There are always photographic opportunities even in a place so familiar to me and I love the peaceful 'feel' there, something which has to be experienced, rather than explained.

I was inspired to try this shot by a photographer whom I follow on Instagram, www.instagram.com/briangrandfield/. The images he has taken of flower petals stopped me in my tracks and I have been obsessing over them for a couple of days. When I was at Costco the other morning I was lingering by the flowers dreaming about creating my own petal images when the florist asked if she could help me. I explained I just want some flower petals and without hesitation she took and snipped off a bunch of roses, popped them in a bag and gave them to me. I am so grateful for her generosity and am hopeful that this may inspire others as well. I do feel like a bit of a butcher though to dismember all the petals of the beautiful full rose was hard for me.

Ethereal. Still very early in the morning but the sun is well into getting its power and the sunrise colours have all disapeared, but we still have the morning soft light and I still have this beautiful ethereal place to myself.
