CSX ET44AH 3296 is rolling a manifest over the Cal-Sag Channel on beautiful autumn morning in Blue Island, IL.

CSX 3376 slowly dumps ballast just west of Vallonia, IN on its trip west to Willow Valley.

Vallonia, also known as Fort Vallonia, is a small village halfway between Brownstown and Medora. The village is home to about 330 people. Originally, it was built as a French frontier settlement. Around 1810, it was fortified as a physical fort to protect their settlement against a Shawnee War Party. Major John Tipton was the commander of two Indiana Ranger companies at the Fort during the War of 1812.

If you were unfamiliar with the terrain here, you might think this shot was taken somewhere east of the Mississippi! After all, a CN/CSX lash up is rare enough, but it is almost unheard of in Colorado. CN 3368, an AC44C6M, and CSX 3293, an ET44AH, lead the way south on Main 1 in perfect afternoon light on Super Bowl Sunday.

NS 3642 takes NS 229 past the north end of the Cordele siding on the NS Macon District (former SOU/GS&F). The train is headed to Jacksonville, FL from Chicago, IL.

The signals here aren't original southern signals but they certainly give off a southern vibe compared to the newer vaders that are scattered on the line.

UP's Denver to Pueblo mixed freight rolls through a winter wonderland as it passes Palmer Lake.

August 15, 2021: An ET44AH GE engine in YN3b paint leads CSX loaded gypsum train W288 (Stilesboro, GA-Bridgeport, AL) by a rural farm house near Kingston, GA on the CSX Western & Atlantic Subdivision.

*My rail-friend Travis Newman captured this same scene a while back (with better looking power), thus inspiring me to try filming something from this angle too.

Slowly strolling into town, J761 rolls past reservoir CPL's on their way back to Toledo. Trains J761(Toledo) and J762(Middletown) shuttle loaded and empty ore cars between the docks in Toledo and AK Steels, now Cleveland Cliffs, Middletown blast furnaces. The crews meet in Lima where they exchange trains and go back the way they came.

A GE ET44AH and ES40DC duo lead southbound train B725 (unit ethanol from the CPKC in Bensenville, IL to the Shell terminal in Sewaren, NJ) high over the massive 1222 ft long trestle crossing Catskill Creek here at about MP 110.3 on modern day CSXT's busy River Sub mainline. Spanning US Route 9W, the creek and Main Street, the once double tracked trestle was built by the West Shore Railroad (a wholly owned subsidiary of the New York Central System) in 1902 replacing an iron structure dating from around 1883 when the route was opened by predecessor New York, West Shore and Buffalo.

I've been unable to find out its height or who it was designed and built by, as well as when the second track was removed. If any of my followers have that information or more that they could share I'd be most grateful.

Here is a link with a story about the original span and an early drawing of that crossing: www.catskillarchive.com/rrextra/brcats.Html

A GE ET44AH Tier 4 locomotive leads Union Pacific's Global 1 - City of Industry container train out of North Yard in Salt Lake City. The first container features UP's patented "Arrowedge" technology.

From Google: "The Arrowedge is a Union Pacific developed aerodynamic device designed to reduce drag on the leading container of double-stack trains. This tapered, 48-foot housing improves airflow around the train's top containers, which decreases the locomotive power needed, leading to lower fuel costs and reduced exhaust emissions. Introduced in 2013, the technology was developed by Union Pacific employees and holds U.S. and Canadian patents."

About the same time UP began Precision Scheduled Railroading (PSR) train operations, Arrowedge containers disappeared from double stack container trains. Many are stored in the mothballed Global 1 intermodal terminal in Chicago.

CSX C764-04 coasts down the overgrown piece of jointed rail known as the Fairless Branch as they prepare to cross Woodbourne Road and enter the yard with quite an odd choice of yard power in the form of new ET44AH 3415 operating long hood forward with twelve cars from Morrisville. Something tells me this wasn't the use CSX had in mind for their newest locomotives, but hey no complaints from me.. August 4, 2016.

CSX Train I137 with a CSX ET44AH on the lead heads up the western slope of CSXs sand patch grade. This part of the line is home to Mance, PA. The iconic post office has been standing for decades and was recently renovated.

The sun peeks out just enough to illuminate the headend of a westbound coal empty as it heads up the 2-percent grade through Rollinsville, Colorado with Union Pacific ET44AH No. 2687 leading on July 26, 2017.

Deep in the Tennessee Appalachians, the raucous noise of CSX train M541's assault on the Duff Mountain grade echoes through the gorge as lead engine ET44AH number 3458 splits the set of L&N searchlight signals at NE Kilsyth. Not too far ahead is the crest of the mountain, marking the start of the descent into Knoxville.

March 21, 2021: A CSX ET44AH GE engine sporting the YN3B paint scheme leads loaded CSX Coal Train N302 (Evansville, IN-Stilesboro, GA) through a shadowed tunnel of trees in the Georgia woods along the CSX Cartersville Subdivision at Atco (unincorporated) in Cartersville, GA. The train is headed to Georgia Power's Plant Bowen in Stilesboro.

A southbound CSX train (CSXT I141) is parked and without a crew at Kayne Ave. Tower in downtown Nashville (the roof of the tower is in the foreground). At left is the L&N-built Union Station, now a hotel. In the background at right are two apparently ex-VIA Rail cars. I was in Nashville on a business trip and thankfully this busy line (the Nashville Terminal Sub) was just a few minutes walk from my hotel.

Constant rain was the theme of the day, and with a flurry of traffic on this visit, it made for some excellent (and ear piercing thanks to wheel slip) railfanning at Fairhope, PA. Here, A neat looking lashup, lead by CSXT 3412, winds its way down the Sand Patch grade, holding back a lengthy intermodal on the rain soaked rails.

CSX Q541 splits the 159.2 signals in London, Kentucky having recently conquered the steep grade of Crooked Hill.

UP 2620, a GE tier 4 loco (an ET44AH), leads UP 8657, 8399 and 8734, three EMD SD70ACe locos, on a westbound double-stack train somewhere near Hanna, Wyoming.

March 13, 2021: A pair of Union Pacific GE engines (ET44AH, AC4400CW) bring CSX loaded ethanol train K403 (Proviso, IL-Ladds, GA) slowly down the Western & Atlantic tracks through the peaceful countryside at Kingston, GA. The train will go in the siding that's just behind this view and wait for several trains to clear up on what was a busy afternoon on the Cartersville Subdivision.

Under an almost cloudless sky, E/B Q-300 is on track one of CSX's Philly Sub approaching Batavia Farm Road. Brand new ET44AH-3306 is on the point.

Being that CSX and NS runs in Columbia, it's always strange when you see the competitor on the other's track. CSX ET44AH 3307 is seen leading NS 901 into Columbia with a pair of FRA cars in tow.

The conductor of BNSF's H-DENPVO gives the crew of the UP coal load CWEAX a nice wave as their respective trains meet at the west end of the siding at Dotsero.

Looking good while relatively new and clean, CSX ET44AH No. 3363 leads three standard cab EMDs with a westbound freight, pulling down the North Runner at CP 285 in East Syracuse on a clear late autumn day in 2016.

New CSX Tier 4 GEVO 3320 gleams in the evening sun as it leads train L017 west towards Chicago on the old Baltimore & Ohio mainline at Deshler, Ohio.

While this train of course isn’t all UPS, I’ve heard from a train master that it gets its name for how much money it makes CSX. This train has very high priority due to the contract between CSX and UPS. In fact CSX loses over 2 thousand dollars for every hour the train is behind schedule. That’s why it’s not so common that EMD’s are put on I031.

The CWEAX 15 rolls past the siding at Grizzly deep in Glenwood Canyon.
