On a beautiful Eastern Kentucky morning, loaded Leatherwood train C621-06 rolls west under the C&O Signal Bridge at “Bobbs”. CSX is sadly in the process of removing No. 2 track between SK Cabin (CMG 57.3) and GC Cabin (CMG 54.3), and as of this weekend the switch at SK is already removed.

Three new Union Pacific GE ET44AC (ET44AH) locomotives growl up the steep grade of Tehachapi Pass at Bealville, California, on March 1, 2016, with an eastbound manifest freight. On a cool Fall morning, CSX train Q576 is seen rolling north through New Farmington, Indiana on its way toward Cincinnati as the sun begins to penetrate the morning fog. CSX utilizes trackage rights over the Louisville & Indiana Railroad which provides a shortcut for trains running between Louisville and Indianapolis. It also allows trains such as this one, to bypass the busier LCL Sub in Kentucky by running north on the L&I to Seymour, and turning east onto the Indiana Sub and heading toward Cincinnati.

More of the standard signal shots were in order as the W084 gingerly creeps over the West End "switch" in Brownstown, IN. Herzog crews were sporatic with their ballast dump between Seymour and Willow Valley, but the stretch between Brownstown and Vallonia received fresh rocks.

When someone asks what the most reliable locomotive produced on US soil is 90% of people would say the SD40-2. This locomotive started out in 1972 in production and had a run that culminated in thousands of engines produced. This example here is SCL 8054. Built in 1979 this motor started out as the Seaboard 8054... It soon became CSX 8054, and ever since has been faithfully at work with a fleet of 40-2's and 40-3's that have better in service ratio than new GE ET44AH's. I froze the old motor at Canoe with a 1/13th of a second shutter speed as it lead W997 southbound. The ground flows beneath the sharp as a tack motor... A fun catch and a great looking motor!
The usual shot at East End Brownstown gets another look as W084 passes the ripped up passing siding.

Another one off the bucket list, and one that I questioned if I would ever get. On the way back from Beecherfest on Nov. 12, 2025 we got some intel that CSX manifest Q317 was at Brooklyn Junction, WV and headed our way down the Ohio River Subdivision. We headed east unit we intercepted him at Sistersville and the chase began. Here, westbound M317 eases down the center of Second St. in downtown St. Marys, WV, led by ET44AH No. 3338. A good way to wrap up the trip.
Union Pacific ET44AH No. 2654 leads UP's Denver to Salt Lake City UPS train through Henefer, Utah at sundown on Sept. 25, 2021.
Not a bad lashup at all for CSX in 2021- AC44s 487 and 408, SD70MAC 4758, a newish ET44AH and another 'MAC- lead a trackage-rights train on Norfolk Southern's Chicago Line at Indiana Harbor, among the steel mill clutter. I had no advance notice of this train, so apologies for the cramped composition!
Another shot from this New Years morning mini chase of Selkirk to Worcester manifest M436. ET44AH 3284 catches a window of morning sun amidst the shadows as it passes the 75 milepost on CSXT's Boston Sub (the one time Boston and Albany Railroad). This view looks west of the South Street bridge in West Warren, while I shoot here often it is nearly always looking the other way at eastbound trains like this: flic.kr/p/2o776xM
