The last train of the year worth mentioning...

EJ&E SD38-2 #656 leads L548 just south of Marissa, Illinois on CN's (ex-IC) St. Louis Subdivision, a shot I've wanted for years. In trail is quite the cornucopia of power, the last four of which were out-shopped by Quality Rail in Granite City, including GTW GP38-2 #5832, CN (IC) SD40-2 #6100, GTW GP9 #4920, CN C44-9W #2551, and CN ES44DC #2321. The train will run southeast to Du Quoin then turn north onto the Centralia Subdivision to reach its namesake.

Behind the train running to the right is the lead to the Prairie State Energy Campus generating station.

Thanks to WR for the train symbol and initial heads up.

CN ES44DC #2223 leads CN Z149 from Montreal through Beare and up the York Sub toward the Brampton Intermodal Terminal on a chilly November afternoon.

A pair of Gevos leads VBIRSBD3 west on the old Santa Fe transcon. We were standing on the old Route 66 overpass near Crookton for this shot.

BNSF 7565 west safely rolls down the original Santa Fe main on Cajon Pass. It was in this location in 1996 where tragedy struck. A runaway freight train derailed at this location, killing Brakeman Kevin Williams, and Conductor Gilbert Ortiz. A transient at Summit closed several angle cocks, which compromised the brake system. This prompted BNSF to erect lighting and wire fencing around Summit. A third cross was erected to honor Rudy Borrego, a BNSF track worker, who was killed in an accident after stopping at the memorial to replace the flags.

With PSR in full effect in North America, it's not uncommon to find other loading tacked onto the front of unit trains.

The second unit #7694 is painted in BNSF H2 livery and is 1 of only 88 in a class of 721 to receive it before the 'BNSF Swoosh' scheme was released. of those 88 some have been repainted over the years.

For all the train lovers out there...

Caught this one in a nick of time... I think the engineer thought I was going to step onto the tracks.

Nope, no death wish, Mr. Engineer... just wanted to get the shot.

I'll be gone for the most part for the next 5 days, Flickr friends. The Indy is calling... all that speed, all that exhaust, all that adrenaline.

Catch you when my train comes into the station.

PS Special shout out to my buddy, Dave H., who is also smitten by the allure of trains. Hugs! Bootsie

Under the shadow of Downtown Houston sits the control point at Rusk (CP H934) on the Houston West Belt. The CP, still guarded by Houston Belt & Terminal searchlights, protects the entrance to the former HB&T Milby St shops. However Union Pacific, which has owned the West Belt since HB&T was split by UP & BNSF in the late 90's, has now erected Vaders to replace the aging searchlights.

Winding through the S-curve at Rusk, BNSF 7372 brings a transfer run from the Houston PTRA down towards BNSF's New South Yard.

The ES44DC (Evolution Series, 4,400 hp, DC traction) replaced the Dash 9-44CW model in the General Electric catalogue. Primary users are BNSF Railway, CSX Transportation, and Canadian National Railway. Pilbara Iron in Australia ordered a lengthened, international version designated ES44DCi. The extra length is used for a larger radiator to increase cooling capacity in the Australian outback.
