A loaded coal train grinds its way over the MRL's Bozeman Pass, emerging from the tunnel at West End, Montana as the trailing SD70MAC billows smoke after its trip through the tunnel. With additional length added to these trains, the MRL is now cutting in mid-train helpers for the trip over the pass.

What I believe was loaded coal train NS 810 thunders east through the signals at control point Pelton along the Christiansburg district with an ES44DC in charge. Some spots had decent color remaining yesterday, like here. But alot of places the leaves were already blown off of the trees unfortunately.

A lone BNSF ES44DC leads a single 89 ft flat car loaded with a new Boeing 737 fuselage en route from the Spirit AeroSystems plant in Wichita, KS headed to Boeing’s Renton, WA plant for final assembly. These specialized movements have been fixtures along this route since the 1960s and see no sign of ending anytime soon as the fourth generation of this, the world’s second most popular aircraft (with 14,668 total ordered through Nov. 2020), remains in production despite recent troubles.

The normal routing of these priority high-wide movements (sometimes moving in dedicated trains like this and sometimes as part of a premium intermodal train) takes them across the length of the Montana Rail Link mainline which is where we find this train just starting down the west side of Bozeman Pass at aptly named West End having just crested the 5702 ft summit about a mile to the east. The train has just crossed the Woodchuck Road crossing at MP 129.4 on MRL’s 2nd Subdivision, the one time Northern Pacific Railway mainline, as it heads downhill to Bozeman and points west.

The sun is getting low in the sky as NS ES44DC 7554 rolls past the former Fleetwood autobody plant with westbound 11N on the Reading Line.

Fleetwood Metal Body was an autobody builder formed in 1909. Its name derives from Fleetwood, Pennsylvania, home of the company at the start, and lived on for decades in the form of the Cadillac Fleetwood and various Fleetwood trim lines on Cadillac cars. Most of the bodywork crafted in Pennsylvania was used by Packard, with the rest of production being split between Cadillac and Lincoln then sent by rail to the rolling chassis manufacturer where assembly was completed. Fleetwood was purchased by Fisher Body in 1925 and integrated into General Motors in 1931. At that time, the former PA facility was closed and operations moved to Detroit , MI.

ES44DC 7287 eastbound & changing mains @ Ancona, Il. (222837)*

It's a bright sunny morning in The Dalles. Against the backdrop of the historic town, and the brilliance of Mount Hood, a BNSF manifest makes it's way east towards Wishram and Pasco.

A recently delivered BNSF ES44DC and a Santa Fe SD75M had a westbound intermodal rolling through Highlands. That fresh paint wouldn't look that good for long. It was built in February of 2005 and this was the 4 day of the month. It doesn't get much cleaner than this.

A lot has changed around this location over the years. BNSF would replace the classic CB&Q signal bridge; the foliage overgrowth is out of control, and the motive power is a lot dirtier and a lot less interesting.

A pair of ES44DC's lead coal empties across the massive trestle at Amonate, Virginia as they make their way up the Dry Fork Branch to load at Beech Creek. With dark clouds and storms surrounding Lombard, Montana, on the afternoon of June 17, 2014, a BNSF coal train snakes along the Missouri River in scenic Lombard Canyon on Montana Rail Link’s Second Subdivision. BNSF GE ES44DC No. 7491 leads a leased Canadian Pacific GE AC4400CW and a BNSF EMD SD70MAC for head end power on the westbound train.

On a late May, sunny evening, CN 519 is in the process of pulling two long tracks off of PSA with an SD75i and an ES44DC for power. While its quite common to have a six axle assigned to servicing PSA Halifax, it is unusual to see two high horses working together here. Quite the memorable evening for me, as after I took this set of photos, my two year old waved to each of the cars as they rolled under us. As we headed for home, the clouds took over within a matter of minutes. You just can't beat that late spring/summer evening light!!
