110-Year-Old Decaying Bridge to Nowhere

Bear with me. I felt compelled to do a series of shots of my favorite bridge in the world, with her magnificent colors of water and sky. I visit only once a year (for 48 straight years), and every time there is nobody here, leaving her and her ruins lonely and forgotten. I will never forget her beauty, or Henry Flagler. Thank you for looking.

 

The Bahia Honda Rail Bridge is a disused bridge in the lower Florida Keys connecting Bahia Honda Key with Spanish Harbor Key. Originally part of the Overseas Railway, the State of Florida purchased it after the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane and converted it to provide automobile use as part of the Overseas Highway in 1938. After a replacement Bahia Honda Bridge was opened in 1972, two spans of the bridge were removed (in the 80's) to accommodate boat traffic and make the majority of the bridge inaccessible to pedestrian traffic, but the rest remain standing. Red bridge-rust.

 

It was originally built by Henry Flagler as part of the Overseas Railroad which was completed in 1912. Flagler funded the construction of the bridge, along with the rest of the railway himself. It was purchased by the state of Florida and converted for highway use in 1938 after the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. Rather than completely rebuilding the bridge after the hurricane, the existing structure was repaired and the deck for the Overseas Highway was added on top, as the existing deck inside the truss was too narrow for vehicular traffic. The bridge served as the primary mode of transport to the islands of the lower Keys, and as a primary evacuation route for many years, before its closing.

 

A new four-lane bridge was built in 1980, a few hundred yards north of the old bridge, replacing the old route of U.S. 1. Today, the former bridge provides a scenic overview of the area for tourists. Two of the truss spans have been removed in order to facilitate boat traffic, as the new bridge has an increased span height. The original bridge has fallen into a state of disrepair and signs have been posted on the bridge warning boat traffic to watch for falling debris, but all of the sections have remained standing (not counting the two that were removed). Yes, this is one of those "been there, done that" kinda shot.. but I hadn't been to this place, so when I got a chance, I had to get this one, or my day wouldn't have been complete.

This was our last night on the ship as we were steaming NW directly toward the Florida Coast, and the sunset in the west was directly ahead of the bow. Almost as if the captain pointed the ship directly at the setting sun! A magical sunset at sea developed. Magnificent! And we were headed straight at it! Was pretty windy, but absolutely incredible for the dozen or so of us out on the bow witnessing this. A truly awesome sea-sunset. Spectacular! Thank you for looking.

The Canucks lost tonight :(.

 

It's A lovely night in Vancouver despite the disheartening loss and the possible, pending riot.

The railway line between Colne and Skipton was closed because it was deemed to be unviable in 1970 and in the intervening years the trackbed has been built on in several places. In Colne the railway would have gone on at this point where Vivary Way, seen in the background, is now. There are also retail premises and a sports centre and their car parks on what used to be railway land. Reinstatement here would cause big but not insurmountable problems .Freight trains from Peel Port, in addition to Drax biomass trains, would be expected to run on the route from Liverpool to Leeds, including Colne to Skipton, and would travel along the line six days a week.

Peel Holdings who, for instance, were involved in creating the Trafford Centre are backing the plans.

Apologies to all the non-railway people, just two more shots today at Quilpie before we get religious! Steam locomotives stopped hauling trains to Quilpie in the mid 1960's. Like all western depots in Queensland that were impacted by bad water needed for the steam locomotives and long dreary distances, Roma steam depot closed early in the dieselisation period in December 1963. Subsequently all trains were worked by diesels, the Quilpie branch declined but also prospered for a time with new cattle loading facilities and then fell silent in 2019 when new cattle yards were developed to the east.

 

Note the more modern addition of safety cage on the erstwhile ladder on the right.

 

Despite this, the old steam era water tank still survives, rusting and probably empty today. Mind you, it may have also been used to fill water wagons for fettling gangs isolated along the line. Like water tanks we came across later on the long closed Hughenden to Winton line, it may still stand until it just falls down! Termites are voracious!

The crew of CCGX 4015 poses with the Snelgrove Station Name Sign just north of Brampton, this pretty much raps up CANDO's 18 year run on the Orangeville and Brampton Railway. From here, the crew will take the unit and two cars south to Vulsay, spot them up then head back to Snelgrove to grab the balance of the train and bring to Orangeville for the final time.

Burned out portion of the Dumbarton rail bridge. The wood/creosote portion of the railroad bridge burned several years ago. The signs say "Danger" and are orange in visible light.

 

Digital infrared, deep red filter, low altitude Kite Aerial Photography. I kept the kite under the altitude of nearby high voltage lines as an busy airport for small planes is a little to the south. This resulted in rig oscillations a little larger than I would have liked. Autofocus has some issues with water in infrared. Not particularly noticeable here.

The view east from the platform ends at Hadfield on Saturday 5th August 1989 looking towards Woodhead with the unmistakable outline of Wild Boar Clough on the right. This is the start of the trackless 14 miles to Penistone & also the most iconic section of the Woodhead Route with Padfield Main Road bridge in the distance with it's electric-railway-compliant raised parapet. Eight years after closure nature is gradually reclaiming the alignment with Rosebay Willowherb "The Railway Plant" discreetly in evidence.

Not that many years ago, to improve train operations and loading of cattle at Quilpie they built, what is called in railway parlance a balloon loop around the stockyards. That way, the train just follows the line around in a circle until it's facing the way it came. Simple stuff, often used at big coal mines today. No shunting, safer and faster. But it seems in the middle of the balloon loop at Quilpie they also had a siding and on that, they left this lone cattle wagon, perhaps, maybe because it had a defect. There is another down near the end of the line close to my last shot today. And these two KL (bogie, cattle, long) wagons will remain, now the line is dead until they rot or get cut up. No use spending money rescuing them, the type is no longer used anyway. So that part of history, QR's "Cattle Train" brand is dead as the Queensland Government contracts out all subsidised cattle trains to new comer, Watco, now!
