On a wintery March 3, 1989, an eastbound Burlington Northern freight climbs over Marias Pass just west of Summit, Montana, beneath the towering peaks of Glacier National Park. The train is all-EMD powered by GP40M No. 3501, GP39M No. 2808, SD40-2B No. 7502 and GP39-2 No. 2723. Leader No. 3501 is a former CB&Q GP40 that was remanufactured by Morrison-Knudsen in 1988.

CSX local F752 led by an EMD SD70MAC pops out of a tree tunnel on the Andrews Sub at N. Charleston on its way to Bennett Yard.

A six-pack of Columbia Basin Railroad first generation EMDs lead a sizeable Connell turn toward the BNSF interchange at Connell. The power consists of CBRW 652, formerly an SD9 and one of only two units rebuilt by Montana Rail Link with components of various other locomotives into an SD19-1 as a result of a very short lived rebuild program, a former ATSF GP9u, and four chop nosed SD9s. The hazy autumn sun is about done for the day, as Soo Line's Ford train pulls through the Cut Off in Milwaukee. The conductor has made the cut at the tannery crossing, and will reach into Muskego yard for some additional freight for the Twin Cities.

Continuing my walk from Snelling Avenue, I saw the UP transfer at East Minneapolis get a lineup when I was at Hamline Avenue. They got crossed over to the close main at St. Anthony for their trip down to St. Paul. Apparently the four snow-covered EMDs were the first to use this main since the snow the previous evening.

An assortment of classic EMD power, with one GEVO spoiler thrown in, are in charge on NS 37Q as they head through Lees Cross Roads on the Lurgan Branch. With the exception of the final two engines in the consist, everything here has since been rebuilt or retired.

Loaded rail train W024 scoots north on the Abbeville Sub behind a duo of venerable SD40-2 locos.

A brand new EMD SD9043MAC leads a 55-car Roper-Stockton manifest at 2nd South in Salt Lake City, Utah the evening of July 5, 1997. UP's MROST symbol was short lived. It would soon change to a Roper to Roseville train.

A Chicago & North Western freight arrives at the yard in Butler, Wisconsin, amid a winter flurry on February 20, 1986. C&NW EMD SD40-2 No. 6860 leads a SD45 still in Cascade green BN colors and a pair of GP7s for power.

With a combined horsepower of 10,400 shoving hard on the tail-end of Chicago to Montreal container train no. 142, a trio of EMD GP38-2s and a sole GE AC4400CW illustrate the challenging grade that trains must climb to get over CP's Hamilton Subdivision. Under the careful watch of a seasoned Hamilton yard crew, CP TH11 and its three GPs will cut off from 142 'on the fly' at Waterdown North, leaving the 9765 to assist the train the rest of the way to Guelph Junction and points east.

A trio of Forty variations lead freshly-baked Minntac pellets southward down the Missabe side, headed to Proctor Yard and ultimately the Duluth docks on Lake Superior. I would break off the chase below Alborn when I got a timely tip that SOO GP30 700 would lead a storage train move south from Two Harbors. Thank you Dave S and all the other birdies that helped on last year's Midwest jaunt.

NS 19D hauling empty Autoracks from Port of Charleston to Greer, SC led by an EMD ACu Unit about to depart Charleston's Seven Mile Yard.

Brewster is an EMD lover's delight, with several model types on display on any particular day. Here GP35 rebuild sits alongside a demo SD40-2 waiting for its next assignments.

The SU-99 is seen basking in the spring sunlight as they cut thru the Black Dirt fields of Orange County.

Caught in between a pair of "failed" ex-Union Pacific SD90MAC Dynamic Brake hatches, Progress/EMD has a nice weekend power lineup left for those who shoot above the fence line. In all my visits here, this lineup almost made me feel like it was "open house" all over again! Kudos to the hostler.

Union Pacific's MNPWC 08 and the YSC25R 09 meet in Salt Lake City, Utah on Jan. 9, 2016.

Five matching H4 EMDs rumble eastward towards Northtown on a beautiful summer morning.

Perhaps 10 years ago (or maybe not even) all five would be wearing a different scheme. But today, they all match., and they look good too!

In June of 1993 after moving to Colorado I took a trip out along the Craig Branch and just before I arrived in Craig a loaded coal train passed me headed east. It was lead by EMD SD70M demo units. I managed more than a few shots as I followed back to Pburg where they changed crews and continued towards Denver. Seen here just east of Toponas headed for Egeria Canyon, 6.93

With both of their EMD 16-710G3C prime movers screaming in Notch 8, BNSF 9194 & 8430 are leading a loaded coal train near Palmer Lake, CO.

CSX F752 with an EMD SD70 MAC leader is rerouted on the A Line to Charleston's Bennett Yard.

A few units sit out in the backlot at EMD's LaGrange plant (which is actually located in McCook), my last stop before returning the rental car. The Windy City is barely visible on the horizon.

Although locomotives were once built here by the thousands, the plant has been downsized significantly in recent decades; it doesn't take a big leap of the imagination to think everything will move one day to the newer plant in Indiana, leaving the historic facility seen here to be only a memory.

I have no idea why the 1984-vintage CP unit was there.

Southern Pacific GP60 No. 9770 leads a hot Denver, Colorado - Oakland, California Forwarder through Riverton, Utah the evening of May 20, 1994. Barely six months old at the time, 9770 is first in the last group of GP60s ever built, among the last production four-axle "geep". EMD produced 380 GP60 series units between 1985 and 1994, including 294 GP60s, 63 GP60Ms, and 23 GP60Bs. Southern Pacific had the largest roster by far at 195, delivered between 1987 and 1994.

IPPX No. 1 basks in the clear afternoon sunshine at the Intermountain Power Railcar Service Center in Springville, Utah the afternoon of June 7, 1985. The attractively painted SW1001 arrived from EMD with a multitude of options including an air conditioned cab.

Montana Rail Link EMD F45 No. 390 leads LM (Laurel to Missoula manifest freight) approaching Greycliff, Montana, on the afternoon of October 3, 2005. The train will be treading through snow by the end of of the day during a blue hour climb of Bozeman Pass.

With eight EMD locomotives on the point, a UP Ogden to Salt Lake City manifest crosses from Main 1 into North Yard at CP 18th North in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The power transfer from Riverdale Yard includes an SD40, SD40, DD35, GP9, GP30, GP9, GP40, and GP9.

Q511 rolls south at XN Tower on the Toledo Subdivision. The train is being led by one of the few remaining SD50's on CSX's roster.

A derailment on the Hi-Line afforded the opportunity to see train #1 with this set of demonstrators rerouting through Southern Montana..

What a light package.

A trio of brand-new Soo Line EMD SD60 locomotives quickly roll west with train 203 at Lewiston, between Portage and Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, on the afternoon of September 27, 1987.

CEFX SD40M-2 3134 was built as a Southern Pacific SD45 in 1967 and was in the CEFX lease fleet in 2000 as it rested in Union Pacific's Proviso yard.

After touring the nation as a hired goon, the 3134 would find itself in Maryland wearing Genesse and Wyoming paint as Maryland Midland's 3449.

While not exactly a melting temperature today, the sun continues to gain angle strength and snow along roads is no match. The resulting puddle made for a nice canvas to reflect a PRS job spotting ore cars on Dock 6 (400/6260/402). 2/18/19

A quartet of Southern Pacific SD45R locomotives lead a westbound train down Tehachapi Pass at Walong, California.

WC 7606,6622 and 2555 are almost to the top as they near Byron with train 346 on a sunny June 23, 2001. I'll never forget the feel of SD45's blasting under you at the County Road F overpass. Pure EMD HP at its finest.

The SD60E program was still a novelty in 2014 and NS seemed to enjoy putting these out on the road on manifest freights. One example of these rebuilt units leads a standard SD70 and an SD40-2 in charge of 16G. I've heard unanimously negative things about these engines from crews, but from a fan's perspective they provided something different when on the road. On the left, the smokestacks remaining from Hershey's original factory remain standing. Chocolate is still made here, but in newer facilities on the west side of town.

Chicago and North Western 6934 led a Union Pacific SD60M and an SD9043MAC on a westbound freight in Fairfax, Iowa in 1996.

The 6934 was painted with an Operation Lifesaver logo which was one of only a few so adorned.

Although a few GEs can be seen, Proctor is still a solid EMD base. Minorca limestone loads depart as an empty pellet train rests in the A Yard.
