Leaving a stormy Crowsnest Pass behind, an eastbound Canadian Pacific freight curves away from Lundbreck, Alberta, on the morning of September 28, 2010. Pulling the train is Union Pacific EMD SD9043MAC No. 8301 and CP GE ES44AC No. 8778.

An eastbound BNSF coal train descends around the mouth of Coal Creek Canyon east of Plainview, Colorado, on May 5, 2014. Three brand-new EMD SD70ACes lead the train (Nos. 8533, 8531 and 8530) past the 22.6 detector on Union Pacific’s Moffat Tunnel Subdivision.

NSM 674 heads back to the mine in Babbitt for another load of ore while passing under the rock cliff near the iconic curves at Milepost 5 near Silver Bay. I got to be honest, I was really considering hiking and relaxing at that clearing above the rock ledge. What a great view.

A pair of ACEs lead the ML over Bozeman Pass near Livingston, Montana.

A six-pack of Columbia Basin Railroad first generation EMDs lead a sizeable Connell turn toward the BNSF interchange at Connell. The power consists of CBRW 652, formerly an SD9 and one of only two units rebuilt by Montana Rail Link with components of various other locomotives into an SD19-1 as a result of a very short lived rebuild program, a former ATSF GP9u, and four chop nosed SD9s. Connell, WA

Continuing my walk from Snelling Avenue, I saw the UP transfer at East Minneapolis get a lineup when I was at Hamline Avenue. They got crossed over to the close main at St. Anthony for their trip down to St. Paul. Apparently the four snow-covered EMDs were the first to use this main since the snow the previous evening.

Rio Grande GP40-2 No. 3113 leads an assortment of various EMD locomotive types down the 2% grade from Soldier Summit at East Gilluly, Utah on a spectacular April 11, 1976 morning, 47 years ago.

An assortment of classic EMD power, with one GEVO spoiler thrown in, are in charge on NS 37Q as they head through Lees Cross Roads on the Lurgan Branch. With the exception of the final two engines in the consist, everything here has since been rebuilt or retired.

Loaded rail train W024 scoots north on the Abbeville Sub behind a duo of venerable SD40-2 locos.

Thunderstorms gather over the Book Cliffs to the north as three Rio Grande Tunnel Motors put their train together at the ECDC landfill at East Carbon, Utah, on October 5, 2004. This local train (LJP45) operated from Helper to East Carbon and return and was nicknamed the “dirt train” because of the contaminated dirt (as well as municipal trash, etc.) it hauled up the old Sunnyside Branch.

Empty rack train Q210 eases through the siding at Howie on a gorgeous evening on CSX's Abbeville Subdivision. The trailing SD70AC was along for the ride as only the SD40-2 was online, making for some sweet EMD sounds as the train battled the rollercoaster-like profile of the former SAL line.

A brand new EMD SD9043MAC leads a 55-car Roper-Stockton manifest at 2nd South in Salt Lake City, Utah the evening of July 5, 1997. UP's MROST symbol was short lived. It would soon change to a Roper to Roseville train.

New Southern Pacific GE C44-9W No. 8194 leads a southbound Wisconsin Central taconite ore train up Byron Hill at Byron, Wisconsin, on February 26, 1995. Trailing No. 8194 is an eclectic trio of EMDs—SP No. 8607, a former PRR/PC/CR/C&NW/NRE SD45 rebuilt by MK into a SD40M-2, followed by Rio Grande SD40T-2 No. 5411 and finally, former N&W/EMD SD35 No. 1642.

Waiting on assets traffic to clear a southbound manifest creeps down to Milwaukee Junction to jump onto the Mount Clemens subdivision for a trip south to either Lang to Flat Rock.

A pair of mighty EMD widecabs hustle the daily Grand Forks "special" out of Big Lake in the last few moments of sun light.

The SD60Ms have split recently, both finding a pairing with an SD75, in this case, 1448 has found 252 as a partner.

With the weather getting colder, most trains are getting the GE treatment with DPs. But this shorter train was perfect for these two EMDs.

Would like to give my thanks and appreciation to Chris Laskowski who not only helped me get this train but also helped me with editing. He's the man!

Two SD60s and a SD40-2 have just pulled this Q241 out of Walbridge and are now getting up to track speed as they roll through Lemoyne. When I took this nearly four years ago, I was convinced it would be the last time I'd be there before signal replacements showed up. Fast forward to 2017, and the C&O is still pure between Walbridge and Fostoria, but the changes are coming fast.

With a lightning storm looming behind, ATSF 92 (FP45), joined by CP 9023 (SD40F), waits outside of Barn 9 at IRM for the next day's EMD 100th Anniversary event.

Caught in between a pair of "failed" ex-Union Pacific SD90MAC Dynamic Brake hatches, Progress/EMD has a nice weekend power lineup left for those who shoot above the fence line. In all my visits here, this lineup almost made me feel like it was "open house" all over again! Kudos to the hostler.

Union Pacific's MNPWC 08 and the YSC25R 09 meet in Salt Lake City, Utah on Jan. 9, 2016.

The town gas station/convenience store has been closed for hours on this hoppin Friday night. With only Kyle, Puda, and myself keeping each other occupied the faint headlight of 385 could finally be seen miles and miles away coming our way followed by the echoing Canadian tuned K3 blasting through the misting air. GLC 385 and 390 with about 50 cars make quick work of heading back to Owosso to get an early quit.

In June of 1993 after moving to Colorado I took a trip out along the Craig Branch and just before I arrived in Craig a loaded coal train passed me headed east. It was lead by EMD SD70M demo units. I managed more than a few shots as I followed back to Pburg where they changed crews and continued towards Denver. Seen here just east of Toponas headed for Egeria Canyon, 6.93

Four EMDs of different varieties lead loads out of MinnTac at Mountain Iron toward Two Harbors. With the departure of the 403 you can't beat orange Bessy's on the ore trains and was glad to get the 169 bridge shot with the 909 leading.

A few units sit out in the backlot at EMD's LaGrange plant (which is actually located in McCook), my last stop before returning the rental car. The Windy City is barely visible on the horizon.

Although locomotives were once built here by the thousands, the plant has been downsized significantly in recent decades; it doesn't take a big leap of the imagination to think everything will move one day to the newer plant in Indiana, leaving the historic facility seen here to be only a memory.

I have no idea why the 1984-vintage CP unit was there.

Southern Pacific GP60 No. 9770 leads a hot Denver, Colorado - Oakland, California Forwarder through Riverton, Utah the evening of May 20, 1994. Barely six months old at the time, 9770 is first in the last group of GP60s ever built, among the last production four-axle "geep". EMD produced 380 GP60 series units between 1985 and 1994, including 294 GP60s, 63 GP60Ms, and 23 GP60Bs. Southern Pacific had the largest roster by far at 195, delivered between 1987 and 1994.
