During his lifetime, Andy Warhol only visited Las Vegas once. In all honesty, Las Vegas was probably a poor fit for the artist’s eccentric ways. But 26 years after his death, Andy Warhol can no longer protest, his is about to become a Las Vegas mainstay. “Warhol out West” is an exhibition of 59 works by the famed artist that opened on February 9th at the Bellagio Hotel.
For Las Vegas residents and visitors, the exhibit should be on the must-see list for even casual art fans. The exhibit is quintessential Warhol, showcasing work in a number of mediums that run the gamut from paintings to wallpaper and everything in-between. Additionally, the subject matter is exactly what you might expect from the late pop artist: Celebrities including Elizabeth Taylor and a Multi-colored “Dollar Sign.” Other works include a rainbow pile of high heel shoes called “Diamond Dust Shoes.” But the highlight of the exhibition is a rare “Double Elvis” featuring a gun toting Elvis Presley that was the reason behind Warhol’s one and only trip to Las Vegas. Warhol made 22 versions of the image, nine of which are in museums and one of which sold last year at auction for a whopping $37 million.
All the artwork is connected by Western themes, and oddly enough it seems Las Vegas is finally a perfect fit for Andy Warhol. And now that Las Vegas has become an epicenter of pop culture, it seems natural that the greatest pop artist to ever lime should be at home there. Similarity, for an artist trying to explore the connections between American consumerism and art, housing the exhibit in a Las Vegas casino seems right on the money.
Art critics have long said that Warhol was ahead of his time, but it seems true for pop culture as well. Although Andy Warhol created art to critique the popular culture of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, his artwork is still entirely relevant in today’s modern world. Consumerism’s world domination has only grown since Warhol’s time, and his work seems more fitting than ever in our reality TV era. Warhol remains an important voice concerning modern culture and an inspiration to new artists each day. Rather than becoming dated as many artists do, Warhol has managed to stay more relevant than ever even after his death.
Regardless of if you are a Warhol fanatic or just interested in popular culture, “Warhol out West” in the Bellagio is one of the best experiences Vegas has to offer. The images of consumerism and iconic celebrity portraits are all must-sees even for someone unfamiliar with the cult surrounding the controversial artist. And for those die-hard fans, the exhibit also has something to offer. Each Warhol exhibit intends to showcase components of the artists rarely seen. The theme and rare pieces in the collection make the exhibit unique to Las Vegas and revealing even for fans who think they know the Warhol story already. No matter how close your relationship with art or pop culture is, this exhibit has something for just about everybody.

Agnes gets to try my new dress - it can fit Poppy and FR because the bust profile on both is very similar. Poppy is narrower across the back and shoulders but my back lacing adjusts to take account of this.
I'm imagining Agnes playing the role of Elizabeth Taylor in a remake of sixties classic film "Butterfield 8". She's serving a bit of Lana Del Rey too or maybe Lana channelling Priscilla Presley...

Valentino Clemente Ludovico Garavani the 80 year old Italian fashion designer has been profiled by Christina Patterson in an article published in The Independent titled ‘Valentino Garavani: The man who turned fashion into an art form’. Patterson states “Audrey Hepburn wore them. Elizabeth Taylor wore them. So did Grace Kelly and Jackie O. …anyone who was anyone, and who was beautiful, and glamorous, and famous, and chic, wore Valentino clothes. And the clothes, it seems, weren’t just clothes. The clothes, it seems, from the way they’ve been displayed, in a new exhibition marking the 50-year career of Valentino Garavani, were art. …Sometimes, it’s just in the cut, but it isn’t “just” a cut, because the cut, like a line in a Picasso, is the mark of the master’s art. Sometimes, it’s in the beadwork, or the edging, or the stitching of a piece of cord. Sometimes, it’s in a piece of silk that’s been cut to make a rose. When you leave the gallery, and go into the room that has cabinets showing close-up examples of the craft, it almost makes you gasp. It makes you think of those medieval artists who carved whole worlds on tiny bits of ivory. It is art. Even to me, it’s art. …a wedding dress that was made for Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece. The dress, apparently, took 25 seamstresses four months. Like, perhaps, the dresses of Marie-Antoinette. But at least the seamstresses are called seamstresses. What Valentino calls his seamstresses (or used to, before he sold the business on) is “le ragazze”. “Le ragazze” means “the girls”. It must be quite strange to be a 60-year old woman and called a “girl”. It must make you think of those Brits who called their adult male African servants “boy”. “To dress stars or empresses is very pleasant,” says Valentino, “because their concept of high fashion remains so pure.” He isn’t joking. He really seems to think that the world he displays, of money, celebrity, flattery, name-dropping, and, of course, an all-consuming obsession with appearance, is something to flaunt.” Inspired by Christina Patterson ow.ly/gpQnf image source Georges Biard ow.ly/gpQm2

Lamentablemente no es una gran foto, pero es mi recuerdo y homenaje a Elizabet Taylor, con quien tuve el placer de compartir unos pequeños instantes en El Cairo en Noviembre de 1995.
Descanse en paz
Unfortunately it is not a great photo, but my memory and tribute to Elizabeth Taylor, with whom I had the pleasure of sharing a small moment in Cairo in November 1995.

British-American actress Elizabeth Taylor (1932-2011) began as a child star. As an adult, she came to be known for her acting talent and beauty. She had a much publicised private life, including eight marriages and several near-death experiences. Taylor was considered one of the great actresses of Hollywood's Golden Age.

This plant was within walking distance of the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Main Library and Wayne State University. I worked here for about 15 years and during those years the plant built Cadillac Limousines. The production was very low about 12 a day but it was still on an assembly line maybe the slowest in the world.
