The Rock Islands of Palau are a collection of several hundred limestone and coral uprises in the Palauan archipelago. They are extremely important to Palau as they support biodiversity, fisheries, tourism, and cultural values. The islands are also famous for their beaches, blue/turquoise lagoons, and have made UNESCO heritage status. There are over 746 species of fish, over 385 corals, 13 species of shark and manta rays, 7 species of giant clams, and all the endemic birds and over half of the endemic plants of Palau.

Welcome to my ecosystem. Come sit watch and listen for a while. The fish and plants are all fine this morning.

This specimen is growing in the Cajas National Park near Laguna Llaviucu, a.k.a. Laguna Zorrocucho, at an altitude of 3160 meters (10,367 feet).

The Parque Nacional Cajas (Cajas National Park) is a national park in the highlands of Ecuador. It is located about 30 km west from Cuenca. It covers an area of 285 km² and ranges in altitude between 3100m and 4450m above sea level. It offers a tundra vegetation on a jagged landscape of hills and valleys. The park contains about 270 lakes and lagoons. Glaciers shaped the landscape of Cajas leaving U-shaped valleys and ravines. Cajas provides about 60% of the drinking water for the Cuenca area.

Humidity, low temperature, and high altitude with low atmospheric pressure create an ecosystem that accumulates organic material in the soil that is able to retain water. The high grassland ecosystem (páramo) contains plants suitably adapted to this unique ecosystem, many of them endemic to Cajas.

A black howler monkey (Alouatta caraya) in the Pantanal region of Brazil's western Mato Grosso do Sul state, April 11, 2006. The Pantanal, a 140,000 sq. km (50,000 sq. mi) seasonally flooded ecosystem which straddles the borders of Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia, is the world's largest wetland. It is about the size of Florida, and about 24 times the size of the Everglades wetland of Florida. It is home to a known 3,500 species of plants, as well as over 650 birds, and 400 species of fish. It is a Brazilian National Heritage site, a significant site of international relevance according to the RAMSAR Wetlands Areas Convention, and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

The ‘Ecosystem-based Adaptation South’ project seeks to help the Seychelles, Nepal and Mauritania to adapt to climate change, in part by restoring natural habitats across all types of ecosystems. In the Seychelles, on-the-ground ecological restoration will rehabilitate 29 hectares of mangrove and wetland forests, thus providing natural flood barriers. It blows my mind that this little ecosystem was just chilling on some tree bark. I’m really digging winter macro shots lately. I’m limited by my current setup, but it’s a lot of fun 🔍

The North West Coast Academic Health Science Network (NWC AHSN) explored the issues that alcohol abuse poses to the healthcare sector at their quarterly ecosystem event held on 14th July at Select Security Stadium in Widnes.

Attended by more than 100 industry and public sector experts, businesses, and academia, the event discussed the current system for alcohol A&E attendances and the challenges faced by services.

Presenters included Professor Sir Ian Gilmore, Chairman, Liverpool Health Partners, Professor Mike Pearson, Professor of Clinical Evaluation, University of Liverpool and Ali Wheeler, Director, Drink Wise.

Dr Liz Mear, chief executive of the NWC AHSN, said: “Alcohol abuse is placing increased pressure on our hospitals and emergency services and it’s critical that we target the root of the problem, rather than attempting to come up with short-term reactive solutions. Unfortunately, it is a growing problem and alcohol-related illness currently makes up ten percent of the UK disease burden as well as being the cause of six percent of road causalities and nearly one in five road deaths.

“This event brought together experts in the field, including public sector workers, industry partners, and academics, to share information and explore new, innovative ways in which to collaboratively tackle this critical issue.”

Currently, it is estimated that alcohol-related harm in England costs the health sector over £20 billion each year. Although it is a national concern, alcohol abuse in North West remains a significant problem with 11 out of the 18 areas in the NWC AHSN region displaying higher morbidity and mortality rates compared with the national average.

The event was held as part of the NWC AHSN’s ecosystem events. Hosted every four months, the ecosystem brings together representatives from the NHS, local councils, academic organisations and industry to work together and tackle health challenges by encouraging the uptake of connected technological healthcare solutions.

This project is building climate resilience of local communities in the cities of Vientiane, Paksan, Savannakhet and Pakse through the implementation of an integrated approach to flood management to reduce the impacts of urban flooding and to help manage climate change induced floods in a long-term. The project activities include strengthening technical capacity and knowledge management for Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA), developing city-level flood management strategies, and implementing urban EbA solutions, including protecting and restoring wetlands and urban streams along the Mekong River.
